While it is a historic building built in 1925 with all the charm that goes along with grand hotels of that era it offers modern rooms with all the amenities you would expect from a grand hotel.

If you are by chance reading this review, just go with this perfectly located hotel, for city square, shopping and historic places, you won’t disappointed.

The hotel building is simply stunning, their staff was extremely friendly, rooms were astonishing and everything was beyond expectations.

Rooms were nice and service was ok.  service was ok, not overly friendly or helpful.

but on both occasions despite the staff being very friendly and polite they got our order wrong on different things on occasions and on the first day we had around a 40 minute wait for our meals.

All of the staff with whom we interacted were friendly, helpful and attentive - nothing was too much trouble.

Spa facilities and gym was quite good and cleaning staff friendly thoroug, and handing out chocolate in the early evening.

Esplanade, very rich of history , every part of the hotel has a story, excellent service excellent staff very friendly staff, restaurants serving the best food in Zagreb.

Staff were friendly, and despite the difficult situation every hotel is currently facing, they maintained a high level of service.

Staff at breakfast is really slow, so be ready to wait for a long time for your order and drink cold coffee.

The waiters working in the breakfast are slow and very lost.

We did have some slow service for lunch out on the terrace,

Only reason for only 4 stars was the slow service for breakfast.

although the service was slow on the a la carte menu and they got a few of our orders wrong.

One slight grumble, the Wi-Fi which was included was a bit slow (5-6MB) and unprotected.

The only downsides - the drain in the shower was very slow, so the shower started filling up, and there is no self-service coffee/tea in the room.

The concierge was amazing. We used hotel's shuttle from the airport and it was perfect ( a bit expensive though)

The concierge and all workers were very pleasant and helpful.

The complete opposite of that from the mostly female staffed waiting in the Brasserie which was exemplary.

Amazingly comfy beds, wonderfully helpful check in staff - moved us from lower floor, dark room to one with a view which was a real bonus and hugely appreciated.

but I must say the staff were so accommodating, Ivan in the breakfast room in particular making us all feel very welcome and entertaining our 8 year old son every day.

but the servers were very engaging and breakfast here was definitely the right way to start the day!

No one checked on us and we were right beside the bar at a table.

And the bar is like stepping back in time to a by gone era

although you would expect it to)  or at the more casual Le Bistro or outside on the Oleander Terrace and you can have a drink at the bar.

I had some wine in the bar; the wine, complimentary snacks and service was good.

The bar staff were friendly and provided a great service.

Locals like to celebrate their birthdays and weddings here and therefore it is a lively place, it is nice to have a drink in the bar.

First there was the bar, beautiful with great service and superb cocktails.

The staff, from the front desk to housekeeping to the bar and bistro to the concierge to the Spa, all were only too happy to be helpful and share their hotel and their city with us. A welcome change from US-corporate-chain hotels, we felt like valued guests in a (large!)

The Bar was also enjoyable, we had some Gin Tonics as the menu shows some 20 different of them (and I really LOVE G&T).

The bar is large and offers a huge gin menu for GT lovers.

I love food at the hotel and service at the bar.

but enjoyed the attentive but unobtrusive service, the clean and well appointed room, excellent brunch on the large, shaded patio and delectable wine in the evening at the bar.

Plus, the bar is a great place to unwind after a day of touring.

There is also a cheeky minibar under the telly with 2 bottles of Heineken that’s cheaper than in the bar downstairs.

Final thing I must mention is the breakfast - absolutely the best hotel breakfast I have ever had by far.

The Esplanade was a bit like a museum in the best sense of the word.

The hotel was full so the best they could offer was combining the beds which is surprising given we arrived at around 4.30pm and it is clear they prioritise their weddings and local groups above their international guests.

The best hotel I have ever seen ( and I have studied hostpitality, worked in the industry and seen many 5 star hotels) .

This is just a grand hotel in the best European tradition.

The breakfast was perfect - amongst the 5* properties in Croatia, probably the best one I have tasted.

Of a side note, the breakfast here is by far one of the best hotel breakfasts I have had in the world.

It's hands down the best hotel in Zagreb or even Croatia for me.

Breakfast was one of the best I've experienced in any hotel- the buffet is high quality and varied, with fresh orange juice made to order, Croatian sparking wine and  a varied selection of a la carte dishes.

Before arriving at the Esplanade a Croatian gentleman had told me that this was the best hotel in Croatia, and he was absolutely right.

The staff was very helpful and attentive and the breakfast buffet was one the best we had in all of Croatia.

Our hotel was the Esplanade Hotel which is one of the best in the city.

Overall perhaps the best hotel in Zagreb and perfect oasis for relaxing like they did in the 1920's.

(This one is on the 3rd floor with no elevator) The apartment is basic, tidy and very well located: 5min away from the main square.

However we were on the third floor and there is no lift so it is a big struggle getting luggage up there.

Needless to say, we had to lift our cases up 3 floors also!

There is an 2 person elevator in the apartment building.

There is also a small elevator that can fit at most four small people.

They made it seem like we would be staying in the apt shown in all the photos (modern looking) and instead put us (myself, 7 months pregnant, my 68 year old mother, my husband and 20 month old daughter) several blocks away from reception at some decrepit old apt with a lobby containing smelly garbage cans and a lift from possibly Soviet times.

The building was art deco with vintage folding door elevators.

Lift lobby of the guest rooms is dark at night.

The reason for 4 and not 5 stars is little details - you have to go to the central office to collect the keys and then walk to the apartment (with 2 young kids and all the gear in cold weather it’s a bit of a hassle), the lift is small so getting up and down win luggage/prams isn’t easy, and it wouldn’t hurt for there to be some sort of “self-catering welcome pack” with tea, coffee, sugar etc.

We took an elevator up to the check-in area, which was quite small

Another thing that was very annoying, when I ordered the room I searched to see if there is an elevator, they didn't wrote it at all.

It was in an old building without elevator, which might be important information.

The only downsides were (1) no elevator with our room on the fourth floor, and (2) barely functioning air conditioner.

The harder part was actually getting into their office across the street, which has very steep stairs leading up to the entrance (from where you take an elevator to check in).

Our apartment was door next to this one (Petrinjska 11) at fourth floor with elevator.

But the apartment is nice - only thing with old buildings there are no elevators and i have to carry a heavy luggage upstairs to 2nd floor - hahaha good exercise for me!! !

The only downside is that there is no elevator in this building, so for elder guests it might be a little challenging to climb the stairs with their luggage.

When we arrived, the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and they helped us find the best authentic Croatian restaurants in town and gave us some tips and tricks on how to get around and see everything.

The reception was really helpful and friendly, he gave us recommendations of where to eat, where not to eat,  where to have the best views and we, In general, we felt very welcome and enjoyed our stay.

Great welcome by friendly staff with loads of great tips for morning coffee, lunch and dinner hot spots to enjoy Zagreb.

Check in was smooth and efficient, and the staff were very friendly.

All of this, I am sure, would have been corrected if I had bothered to bring it to their attention as the people at check in were very friendly and helpful.

The ZigZag team were fantastic - friendly, informative and incredibly patient as I tried to park my car in an impossibly tight space!

Staff were very friendly and spoke English and Neda in was reception was extremely helpful during the whole booking process .

We also thought the staff at reception were excellent- very friendly and helpful.

The desk staff couldn't be any nicer, and were very friendly and helpful.

We called support office, they suggested us to sent the address of nearest parking and garage.

We did not meet any staff in person, only communicated through email and they offered no assistance (their office was over 5 minutes walk away).

We stayed for 2 night in one of Irundo apartments., It was self service accommodation and as our flight was early morning we reached at the office around 8.45am we found the property manager Mr. Marko, he was very professional and extremely helpful, he gave us the key, so we don’t have to wait until 3 pm.

They own a bunch of different apartments managed from a central office.

The hotel is on the second floor of a office building close to Zagreb Square.

The girls in the office were very helpful and efficient.

Check-in at the main office on Petrinjska was immediate and I was escorted about 5 minutes up to the apartment building and given a walk-through.

Very warm welcome by staff, they even walked us from the office to our apartment.

We also reserved a parking spot in Zigzag office for 10 euro per day.

Darko who great me was very nice and helped me to check info for exchange office (it was naitonal holiday so lots of offices were not opening).

It was very centrally located and the staff in he office were incredibly professional.

We had one night here and it was good for the night, The office was not where the accommodation is and neither is the car parking.

the main office is only a couple blocks from the train station (an easy walk).

The hardest part was to find the Zigzag office,

Easy check-in process, the office is located in the building next door so easy to pop in if we needed anything.

Zigzag is a very cool place - hidden away on the 2nd floor of a kind of run-down office building in downtown Zagreb.

I stayed in the apartment right next door to the main Zagreb office.

The apartment we were in (2 doors down from their office) was very close to the main square and within a short walk of everything we wanted to do.

Yes: it’s an apartment so no housekeeping and you may need to buy stuff if your stay is long. e.g.

Housekeeping did not visit us once during those three days.

Cons:
- the bed lingerie could have been cleaner.

but no body ever came to clean the apartment.

Had to ask the reception for housekeeping which is in another building.

but whereas they include cleaning products for everything else, there's no laundry detergent.

but then there was a Sunday and they also didn't clean), the place could have needed it, they were spiderwebs at some places.

The only thing I didn't like was that they tidy up the room every two days, not daily.

The facility is in an office building, occupying a floor and since it is not a hotel, they only clean the room and change sheets every other day.

Even the hotel does not change towels and clean the room,

The only thing you need to know is that you're renting an apartment, not a hotel room, so there's no maid service or free breakfast.

Towels are provided, cleaning and toilettries are not.

Although daily cleaning was not provided, fresh towels etc.

When the apartment was ready later, we had to transport the luggages to the apartment itself (lucky that it just stopped pouring with rain when we did that), it could be quite a nuisance for people who need to check-in early;
2/ there is only one bathroom to share among 3 bedrooms although it does have an extra toilet, so there could be a lot of waiting if one has a big group (i think it could accommodate up to 8 people); 
3/ there was no washing powder to go with the washing machine, and there was only the one roll of toilet paper in each toilet, once finished (and it would becasue as an apartment, it only has cleaning service once every week)

The main selling feature is a nice balcony overlooking the Dolac Market with beautiful view of the Cathedral, the Upper Town, and the Strossmayerovo promenade.

We visited Zagreb for the Christmas markets.

Walking distance to old town where all the historic buildings and church are and farmers market.

but the building is very old and the main entrance wasn’t clean and smelly, it was in a great location, within 1 minute walk of the Cathedral Square, plaza market and many restaurants.

The location is great, a few minutes from main square, and the fruit market and we managed to walk around the main sights of zagreb, in a few hours.

Great apartment to explore Zagreb’s sites, restaurants, bars and markets.

I chose if for the terrace which is the penthouse floor overlooking the old town towers and Dolac market where I went down to get fresh strawberries.

The location is perfect - just a block from the Main Square, close to the major market and flower market, and within easy walking distance of museums.

One of the bedrooms overlooks the cathedral and you’re therefore an extremely short walk to most of the city sites and immersed in the market.

It was incredibly convenient, comfortable and clean, within a 10-minute walk of the plaza market and many restaurants.

Great restaurants, markets and most tourist spots.great shopping,reception staff were great, parking space is limited so needs to be booked.

Right out the front door is the square plus tons of restaurants and shops plus the daily market.

It is also very close to the main square and Dolac Market.

The location is very good. You can go shopping one main street and traditional market and come back dropping off the stuff then go out for more shopping:)

The market life, the bars/cafes , the cathedral bells, the tram etc.

Great walking access to all of the old town sights, including the Dolac markets.

i lived in the middle of old town next to the flower market main square markets.

We can go to main square,market and church in about 10 minutes walk.

We interacted with the staff entirely through email, and a key was left in a lock box in front of the building.

the reception was unmanned; and all we had received from the company was a key safe box code!!)

There were no keys; I needed to remember 3 code numbers to get in, one to the building's front door, one to the second floor, and finally one to the "apartment" itself.

but although there was no one at the reception, they have arranged for me to pick up the key, no hassle.

Key and lock to front door also did not work after she left.

It's a fire trap and should have a way to get out without a key.

Reception left a key for us we were able to find the main zigzag building to pick up key however once in the main building it was hard to locate the reception which is on the first floor

Getting inside the parking area was also made difficult by having to pick-up the access key from the second floor reception and returning it after parking.

though initially, our key card did not work properly.

Arrived back and keys tomexternal door did not work.

I need 2 keys and a card to access my apartment.

In the old city there is no cars.allowed so he met the taxi,carried my luggage and showed me how things worked with the locks and key and lights etc.

There's a code to get into the building and card key access for the individual room.

We didn’t know when we would arrive in Zagreb, we were warned by the hotel that the reception works until 19:30 and if we were late they would leave the keys for our suite at the reception.

but Key was waiting for me with all instructions).

Since there was a delay in check in as there was change in shift timing, they just gave us the room keys first to settle in and then get the paperwork done later - that was awesome instead of waiting for another half hour and getting frustrated!

We were asked to leave the keys in the apartment as we left outside the service hour.

but there are a few points one has to take note of to stay there:

1/ it is an apartment, not a hotel, although they could meet you at the apartment to give you the key (contact them half an hour before arrival) but if you arrive before their check-in time like we did, you would have to check-in and leave our luggage at the office instead.

It has great apartment rooms, two minute walk to the main sqaure and it is VERY close to all the sites you have to see.

The Apartment was spacious, clean had wifi and was centrally located in town and easy to walk to the main sites and enjoy all of the shops and restaurants lining the streets.
