Exceptional service started when I had to call directly to book a room due to spotty cell service on the road.

As of Feb, 2022, a lot of restaurants  in the area were on limited service due to covid/labor shortage.

Due to Covid, there were some changes: no daily service, contact less check-in/out.

We had an upstairs room, which we would recommend since there could be some noise from above due to the wooden floors.

Due to a change of plans while visiting the nearby North Cascades National park I made a last minute reservation for one night at the Mt Gardner Inn.

We had to cancel most of our trip due to my daughter's surgery so we could only stay one night.

We booked a room in this hotel and town for one night due to its closeness to the North Cascades, not knowing at that point that Winthrop is an interesting little place that's actually worth a visit and mentioned in our guidebook.

This was referred to the front desk, they apologised, didn't realise the room had been overlooked and said it was probably due to a new member of staff.

Contractually I would have been obliged to pay 50% of the hotel costs because I didn't realise until a few days before we were due to stay

However when we made the reservation, we were not told that highway 20 was closed due to mudslides.

but this made it very peaceful as town can be noisy due to amount of Harleys the north cascade loop attracts.

The rooms are very clean, the bed and linens are super soft, and we woke up in the morning to see a mule deer and her fawn grazing outside our window.

We so appreciate the very comfortable room and the cleanliness was A+…it’s great to support a small family owned business, for a change.

You should also be aware that there is no elevator.

There are no lifts to 1st floor and no restaurant available.

FYI, no elevator so if you have challenges walking up stairs ask for the street level.

I am pretty sure there is not an elevator so if you have a problem with steps or carrying your bags you may want to let the hotel know before your trip so they can accommodate your needs.

The Rio Vista hotel is very clean too and everything in my room worked -- lights, TV, shower, etc.

Loved everything about this place, from the spotless room with charming hand made wood furniture, lovely private deck overlooking the river and hills beyond.

The carpets were water stained and the halls smelled damp.

The original motor/hotel burned down in a fire several years ago that started next door.

even though we never smoked in our room or on the balcony during our stay, we were sent an email after returning home saying that we were being charged $150 cleaning fee for smoking in our room and on the balcony!!!

.and the other things is that not only are the rooms non-smoking,

but when we saw the green scum around the edge of tub, we all got grossed out and decided to stay out of it.

The bedding looked very worn and the pillow shams smelled of smoke,

The first floor is below street level and has a hallway that is open at both ends, unheated and feels a little musty.

our first floor room was soooo noisy, with guests above us, walking around on the squeaky floors until MN!

I fully understand guests having dogs thats fine, when a guest is outside and the dog barks from the window at them at 5am its a bit much.

Last time we stayed at Abby Creek Inn was back in June 2020 when despite the poor customer check-in experience (we were given first a dirty room with garbage still in the room, dirty sheets, hair in the sink, definitely not cleaned up after the previous guests left , then got moved to a room we couldn't access the card being wrong or not activated) I chose to give them a pass (due to the overall Covid situation and limited staff I assumed they had) and didn't write a review back then.

Guests have intolerances and/or people live vegetarian or even vegan.

There is seating and they offered board games for guests use.

None of the tables were getting wiped down so new guests were grabbing napkins and wiping things down best they could.

The first morning another guest and I both commented that the gravy was cold - and were told we were incorrect .

Guests receive a discount rate of $15 for the Abbey Creek lazy river tube rental/ shuttle service which sweetens the deal and provides a low budget vacation experience for families.

Regardless of the cost, there are certain basics that hotels must provide and their guests expect and need.

The only noise we heard, every once in a while, was the guests above us walking around.

The sleep quality depends on how respectfull other guests are, since you can hear everything around you.

And a "continental" breakfast is provided at no charge to guests.

Motelowners like the one here do not trust their guests: the guests not only have to prepay their room

We truely felt like his guests - not just another group of paying customers.

Around 9:00 pm a very loud grinding machine sound started coming from the room above.

When their day was finished they would overtake the pool and were rough housing and playing loud music.

The A/C that they installed was also loud,

And even then you could hear that thing‘s buzzing.

I would love to go back to Winthrop and play tourist as we were out early the next morning and I didn't get a chance to explore the town.

It’s midnight and there’s a very loud group of people drinking and partying and shouting in the courtyard.

We were there for 4 nights as part of a wedding party so it wasn’t just a last minute overnighter.

We didn't like: the loud air conditioning that barely kept the room at a comfortable temperature.

As I am writing this,  the people in the room above us are apparently hosting a Hoedown, at 11:oo  at night,  and no one at the front desk to answer our call.

Air conditioner was like a gasping loud workhorse.

As to other sounds, while we could only hear muffled voices in the rooms above, the floors were structurally very loud and squeaky such that any and all movement could be plainly heard below.

When we checked in, the pool was full of kids playing and we thought oh boy, it's going to be a long and noisy night with all these kids .

Only draw back was this week deer season is open and the deer hunters' and their trucks were very loud when leaving at 6am.

Every step he took caused the ceiling to make loud creaky noises (it is quite an old building) and so we lay awake until 6.00 a.m. when we went back to our original room and tried to get to sleep again,

but super clean and everything you need in the room.

Good: friendly reception, very clean rooms, good location on highway minutes away from the town center.

I could actually hear her saying "Sorry" in her bathroom the walls were that thin.

The room we were moved to had no working lights, smelled like backed up sewage, had a broken shower head, mold in the shower, more bugs in the room, dirty sheets again, nasty stains on the carpets and ceilings, the microwave didn’t work, the curtains wouldn’t close all the way.

Frayed lampshade, chipped faucet, stained carpet, incredibly loud, ancient A/C unit, no screens on window or sliding door so no fresh air, and despite the nice welcoming email, an attitude with the front desk of too bad, no changes or effort to accommodate.

The shower was so full of hair it looked like a dog had been bathed in there.

In the shower there was strands of black hair on the wall, which was very a small walk in.

No offer of a partial refund given the missing amenities.

but I came to terms with this place rather quickly when I realized we came to ski and snowshoe, not to pay for overpriced amenities that we rarely use.

One thing that was pretty bad was the brand of soap offered so I would bring your own.

The water is hard so getting a lather with either soap or shampoo is difficult.

The carpet had ruffles in it and the ceiling had stains from past leaks from upstairs.

It appeared that the top of the toilet tank had not been cleaned in quite a while.

It does not have a lot of amenities and the hot tub was not working

The sink was in a cabinet in the main room.

After showering off, we love to go over and soak our tired bones in the hot tub.

The only drawback was thin walls which allowed every toilet flush and wash in the sink to resonate throughout our room.

Add it to the list: the cable dosen't work and the room is dinky with the "bathroom" at the foot of the bed.

Last weekend we booked a room day-of over the phone.

Found another note at room to call another number;

We have AT&T cell phones and they were only able to do voice calls - no messaging or other smart phone functions.

but not what I would call just outside the door.

So we got a wake up call of a beautiful sight and magic watching it soar off into the mountains.

The lady who works at the front desk was rude when I made my reservation over the phone and again when we checked in.

We had to call to get the reservation,  I was writing down the information as I was getting it read to me over the phone as they confirmed we had two rooms reserved.

but I haven't figured out exactly how to work my I phone style camera to post them here. sorry!

But be careful if you are going to rely upon Management to give you an early wake-up call.

We enjoyed the stay in the hotel, the room was clean and confortable, good breakfast, big garden, parking lot and easy access.

The room was spotless and had a small balcony overlooking a VERY well manicured lawn at the front of the property.

The staff was very friendly as well, grounds are nice and clean and well kept as was the room.

The grounds are well keep, the building is well maintained and the rooms are clean, well appointed and the sleep quality was OK.

The first room we were given had a broken ac unit, bugs on the walls and dirty sheets.

Walls were thin, so even if the window was closed it would have been noisy.

Because it is a budget place we could hear our neighbors through the wall which is annoying after a while.

but didn’t even clean the wall, let alone patch the holes.

The bad: Walls are so thin you will hear the conversations in the next room plus any dogs whining or barking.
