The lack of air conditioning is a bit of an issue on warmer evenings as the windows don't have screens on them to keep the mozzies out - this is the main reason for 3 stars.

With our summer stay, an air conditioner would have been nice

but no fan, wifi poor,  banquet even meal failed to deliver.

The heater is quite small for the room size so it never got that toasty in the room,

With threadbare carpets, aging furniture and outdated heating, the Mackenzie Country Inn is more like a rundown Holiday Inn than the image of a quaint, rural B&B that the name conjures.

but no air conditioning (and is probably not usually needed).

There was no air conditioning or ceiling fan so it was very uncomfortable.

Hotel was quite basic- no air conditioning and breakfast was a let down.

This place could use some updating as they still use metal keys and there is no air conditioning or elevator,

There is no fans and limited fresh air and we would not stay in summer as it would be so hot without air con.

By the dryness of my chicken it had been under a heating element for some time.

Our room was cold - despite having the heater going on full the whole time.

My only gripe is that the heater in the room was super loud kept making noises so we couldn't have it on over night which resulted in a cold room.

but there was still an irritating humming noise all night long, presumably from the air conditioning unit downstairs.

When we had a shower the bathroom drain overflowed onto the bathroom floor.

but there are electric blankets on the bed and fan heater in bathroom.

After entering the deluxe room and putting our bags away when found there was no shower curtain in the bathroom, which we requested.

but the furniture and bathroom were tired and in need of updating.

The water pressure in the shower is almost non-existent and the ‘warning’ about limited water is alarming as the first 5 minutes are used waiting for the water to warm up!

Like glass in the toilet or liquid soap, feeds like 1980 in Russia.

Very very very outdated place where the rooms are almost clean and the bathrooms are like 1950s US hospitals complete with little or no hot water.

There was a nasty stain on the ceiling and the bathroom was shabby.

Basic kitchenette with tea and coffee facilities only and it's quite a challenge to fill the jug in the bathroom sink.

There are two food markets less than one click away, the hot stays hot if showering less than than an hour, and there are several places to eat in the small town.

although bathroom need some work,  and warmer need some work too.

I couldn't fit the jug under the tap in the bathroom.

Even ignoring that the room had clearly had no upgrades since 1985 and that no free wifi was included, the final straw was that the shower was barely more than an intermittent trickle down the wall.

This ‘buffet’ didn’t even have muffins or pastries.

Restaurant with great food especially the evening buffet.

The buffet evening meal and buffet breakfast, included in the tour, were OK.

Excellent Buffet resturant with roasts, Salads and Veges for $40NZD PP very good meal and nice surroundings.

They refused to serve ice cream with the sweet, breakfast was ok

She offered us $NZ60 in all so we could walk 10 minutes into town each morning to get breakfast at the very good Hydro cafe.

The buffet breakfast was good value and well catered for, with plenty to choose from.

Breakfast was buffet style, catering for both Eastern and Western tastes and was very enjoyable.

The staff were also really friendly and the breakfast we had in the morning was very good and highly recommended.

The buffet in the restaurant is first class, the staff work really hard to keep everything fresh and available.

Breakfast included with accommodation package.

Additionally, we were provided with a large and varied selection of food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

After watching people actually pick up food with their hands from the buffet we opted for the menu.

For an extra 20$ we got a breakfast buffet.

Buffet dinner is to be avoided , over cooked Brussel sprouts , accompanied by 4 hour boiled carrot slices , served with fatty slices of roast meat .

The buffet meal for the evening was good as was the breakfast, and the team working there were great.

but plenty of room and the buffet evening meal on offer means no waiting around in the restaurant for food which was good value.

We had the morning breakfast and evening meals and would recommend both.

We ate in the bar - as the buffet restaurant was busy with a coach party or two - and had a very nice meal.

They provide a good buffet breakfast and dinner.

The dinner and breakfast buffet had a good selection of food, there is reasonably priced drinks in the bar and a nice Lounge to chill out and relax.

The evening buffet meal was also very generous in portion and choice of food.

The buffet dinner was the best and will be back for sure.

Room is a good size and beds are comfortable.

but is very  clean and comfortable and in a good location.

The rooms were fantastic as they were big and comfortable.

The room we had, was of a good size, with 2 beds, clean, bright and very comfortable.

Having said that the beds are comfortable and the rooms spacious.

Each room was very spacious, clean, 2 comfortable double beds, with both bath and shower.

but the room is good sized, bathroom tub/shower, and with a heated bed pad and a toasty wall radiator, the comfort level was excellent.

Stayed 2 nights in a comfortable warm setting.

We had a comfortable stay (again) last weekend.

however it was still comfortable for what we needed.

Staff warm and welcoming and room spacious and comfortable.

Our bed was comfortable and we slept well.

but this place was very clean, comfy beds and very close to Pukaki and Tekapo .. which where our purpose!!

It was convenient to the highway and just a good spot to stop.

Washer / dryer facilities available for guest, $4 per load, which was very convenient.

The hotel itself is conveniently located to the main road and local Twizel restaurants.

It’s handy to the Salmon farm which is a popular tourist spot and Poppies restaurant opposite is fantastic.

The staff were pleasant and helpful and it was a convenient stopover on route to Queenstown

Some may find this ideal as it a case of eating as much as you want and is a set price for a 3   Course meal plus coffee.

The Inn is situated on the edge of town and is a convenient stopover on a drive to Mount Cook and surrounding areas.It was clean and tidy

Twizel is very convenient- between Mont Cook Village and Tekapo- so a great option when you want to visit both.

Fine for an overnight crash pad nad convenient en route to Christchurch.

Convenient to Mt Cook and the cafe opposite it was fabulous!

The hotel is convenient to both the highway as well as a short walk or drive to town to get supplies.

We stayed here on our way to Christchurch form Te Anua mainly because it was a convenient palace and approximately half way there.

A good place to stay, convenient to mount cook, lake tekapo etc, room was a good size, down side was it was $5 extra to get wifi for 24 hours.

The hotel was clean and convenient to do other outdoor activities.

All in all a pleasant experience, with all the conveniences we wanted as a large exhausted group on a bike trip.

Otherwise if your looking for a room in the general vicinity within easy reach of Mount Cook, I would recommend you first have a look at Lake Tekapo for a better range of accommodation that is also of better value.

The hotel room was on the first floor and was large with two double beds and two stylish lounge chairs, a small balcony also with two chairs. The hotel was a little dated (1990s?)

Reception was not open and all exterior and interior doors were locked.

The lobby and the bar area needs refurbishment, including all the worn out carpets.

but the carpets were worn, the rooms ceiling had paint flaking and generally, it was just showing it’s age.

I would also like to suggest they refurnish each room as the furniture are super old and my husband said “it looks like a scene from a horror movie”.

Minus 1 star because there was a (for lack of better words) creepy vibe to the hotel and town in general.

When meal it arrived was very nice and the surroundings were as they were some 20 years ago, we did not worry that it took a while to get our meal as the entertainment was very funny.

It's a large and clean hotel with large rooms and good laundry facilities.

Apart from these little issue, the hotel itself is in a great location, the building looks beautiful from the outside and the room was big and spacious.

The room is large, bathroom a good size, tea and coffee making facilities and a fridge.

We tried both the lamb shank and the steak, highly recommended and very filling ;-)

The Mackenzie country inn charges $275 per night for a poorly decorated family room which I think has not been updated since the seventies.

The mattress and pillows and sheets need to be updated

but the tap ware, etc could probably do with updating.

They are currently doing some remodeling work.

However, the hotel is definitely in need of refurbishment, it is dated.

The inn was doing some refurbishing ( changing carpets) at that time

Under renovation at present, the rooms were very ordinary, the bar food poor and the general experience not worth the agents booking fee.

Food in the restaurant was good, and it's an easy stroll down to the shops.

Hotel restaurant is wonderful, order the salmon if that’s your thing; it’s amazing.

Poppies lived up to its billing and the brunch set us up for the day's drive.

Can you imagine that in New Zealand where coffee seems to be as popular as beer that this hotel serves INSTANT COFFEE?!!?

Consequently the bar and restaurant were closed.

Food was good pub food and beautifully cooked.

Whilst the food was good the service could be improved.

The town of Twizel is gentle 15-minute walk from hotel with number of small shops, supermarket, restaurants and couple of small bars.

Dinner was very good with both leg of lamb and roast beef at the carvery.

It's located close to many good restaurants.

Our room was very very spacious, very clean and great sheets!

The hotel is large-more than 150 rooms that appear to be turned over every night as the hotel caters to numerous tour groups.

Generous room sizes combined with large common areas are a great feature of this hotel.

She said that we had been upgraded to a deluxe room.

On check in we were advised of an upgrade to a deluxe room, which we thought was very nice.

Room on ground floor had lovely garden view.

but we heated it up satisfactorily and there were warm rooms around reception to relax in.

Btw the woman at the reception desk was nice.

Twizel is very much a summer destination so the hotel offers accommodation only 
We were warmly welcomed and immediately told that neither the restaurant nor the bar would be open.

Professional friendly staff especially in the restaurant.

The staff were very friendly and happy to help.

And while the staff is friendly and happy to help out, for the three nights we were here our room was only serviced once and only after we asked them to do so.

Friendly manager, Jackie very helpful and cheery.

On the other hand the over worked receptionist was wonderful to deal with, very friendly and welcoming.

Lady at desk was lovely and very helpful.

The staff are friendly and check in/out was easy.

Young man on reception as we arrived was welcoming and friendly.

Good facilities and great staff thank you.

Pleased with our overall experienced at the hotel, and having polite staff on reception makes all the difference, thank you.

The staff did a wonderful carved salmon for an appetizer.

but it was explained to us that we were in the high season, which is something we will look at next time we want to stay.

This I think, beats the polish where the GRO would thank me for my patience while she arranges for housekeeping to come and fold up the bed.

The staff were really top rate during our stay.

Breakfast is wonderful, as is Mel’s coffee.

Breakfast, freshly cooked to order is divine, tables set out on a communal basis which gives the opportunity to share travel stories from around the world.

The breakfast was utterly delicious and Mel’s cake was divine.

Mel is a wonderful breakfast chef and makes you feel at home.

I really appreciate the personal touches - from the delicious snacks (the choco chip cookies were out of this world) provided around the clock to  the emphasis on the guests eating together every morning at breakfast (which is also delicious).

Mel (with Mark's assistance when he is available) prepares a delicious made to order breakfast and adds some great conversation; plus Mel provides snacks, homemade cookies, teas and coffee, and an honor bar throughout the day.

She also makes an awesome cooked breakfast.

Mel’s breakfast was delicious & we really enjoyed it.

The breakfast she prepared each day was wonderful and she went out of her way to cover anything we needed.

It was the little things that mattered, the home baking on arrival, the message before we got there re our ETA, ensuring we had everything we needed, the cooked breakfast, the works.

The honesty bar es open 24/7 and in the mornings they offer continental breakfast!

Beautifully presented rooms, picturesque views, delicious home cooked breakfast coupled with very welcoming and friendly hosts in Mel and Mark made for a great experience and most enjoyable stop over for our drive from Queenstown to Christchurch.

Its hosts Mel and Mark make you feel as if they’re family and are most accommodating in your needs both in the room and at breakfast.

Breakfast in the morning was amazing-cooked to order by Mel and delicious.

Once you’ve eaten, come back to Matuka for drinks from the honesty bar and enjoy views to die for.

Home made cookies, cake, a variety of nibbles and hot drinks accessible to guests all day, plus divine drinking water, free of chemicals.

There’s also an honesty bar for evening drinks.

Mel had baked great cookies and cake, the fridge was stacked with drinks and even a cocktail bar ( drinks are available on a honour system)  was in place!

The hosts were friendly, helpful, and very accommodating. They made sure we had a welcome drink and snacks upon arrival (who knew fruitcake could be so delicious?!)

Libby and Geoff are pleasant hosts, offering snacks like cake and fruit as well as several wines and other drinks part of an honesty bar principle - this was much appreciated.

You have the main lodge at your disposal with very reasonably priced drinks, nibbles and a beautiful breakfast.

They then showed us round, first the shared areas - from the snug with plenty of reading material, to the sitting room, dining room and kitchen, where you help yourself at any time to tea, coffee, soft drinks, fruit & cake.

, a good selection of soft drinks in the fridge plus alcoholic spirits and wine available on an honesty box self-serve basis (first drink on the house!).

Very clean with lots of extra touches - lots of books on the area, free home made cake, complimentary drinks, free tea and coffee.

An honesty bar is run for additional drinks and this works very well.

The breakfast is delicious as were the extras, the welcome drink, the homemade cake and the endless supply of cookies.

Peter and Jo make you feel so welcomed here with their delicious breakfast and assortments of snacks and drinks.

Beer and wine available with honesty box for payment after first free drink.

a great spot to use to base for activities in the area.wonderful hosts and very comfortable facilities.We cycled  3 different rides in the area and were spoilt with warm fires and a pick- me -up drink at the end of each day.Jo and Peter are natural hosts and leave nothing to chance.Delightful.

There's a wide selection of snacks, tea, and drinks too.

Delicious home baked food was available to help ourselves to, a welcome drink and a substantial scrumptious breakfast provided.

The facilities were fabulous, a wide range of drinks available including a complimentary one.

There is also drinks on offer, the first is complementary and then any subsequent drinks are $5, and the owners operate an honesty box for payments.

The Lounge is stocked with drinks and snacks and is self-serve.

A wonderful experience from top to bottom at the Mantuka Lodge.
