Not enough headroom in the bathroom for a shower.

The bed was uncomfortable, the shower extremely small.

but the bedrooms are tired with tacky furnishings and very basic bathrooms.

Only reason that I did not give 5 stars is three little things that could easily be remedied: no teaspoons with the tea making facility in the room (they had those horrible wooden sticks), no ‘knob’ at the end of the pull cord on the light in the shower room, no shower tray for shampoo etc.

The building is very old and quaint, myriad corners, stairs and quirky rooms including a "secret" staircase (now a fire escape) in our Bathroom.

although shower a little on the small side .

It just has a shower and no bath  (small bathroom )

but cosy, my one and only complaint was that you have to go up some steps into the bathroom  then try to close the door which was difficult to shut as you were at an angle looking down the steps and there wasn't a handle !! .

We were in Rm 31 which was full of character - or so we thought until we were wonderfully upgraded on the off chance after enquiring about the possibility of a room with a bath for our 2nd evening.

My only issues with our room this time (24) the water pressure is so low the shower attachment does not really work and the bath took ages to fill.

Cheap polyester curtains and not particularly high spec bathroom.

but the only one available when we booked and perhaps could have done with 1 less chair to make it easier to get to the bathroom.

but it was 'peak time' so they were probably under pressure.

but would have preferred a shower, but understand that there were not many elizabeathen shower rooms, decor of the hotel enhanced its amiance.

The Mermaid Inn is a Grade II listed historical Inn located on Mermaid Street.

It was clean, friendly staff and the historical building lovely.

The most delicious fish and chips in a beautiful historic pub.

The pub is a beautiful historic building and the relaxed atmosphere of the meal with coffee served in the lounge was wonderful.

It's like renting a room in a museum: every corner of this hotel is so interesting and full of antiques, history and perfect places for photo opportunities.

Lots of historic places to see in the area some of which are residential.

Rye is quite unique and full of interesting historical buildings.

We had booked through Secret Escapes and were very excited to visit this historic inn.

Lovely historical place in a quiet court yard.

but again, it’s in a very historic area where parking can’t be magicked up and there is plenty of off site parking around but maybe drop off your bags first as lugging baggage up the cobbled Mermaid Street maybe tiring.

One inside, we found ourselves in a beautiful historic bar room that was wonderfully atmospheric, and dominated by a huge fireplace that took up most of the far wall.

Rye is not a big place and understandably the inn doesn’t have ample parking being on such a historic and hilly site.

During this visit we were extremely fortunate to meet Judith the lovely affable owner of this beautiful Inn, who very generously gave us a fascinating tour of this historic building and it’s beautiful antiquities and shared some lovely stories with us, the cellars are amazing, we cannot wait to hear more about these.

Another return visit to this wonderful historic hotel.

Other antique furniture in the room was tasteful and in tune with the overall style of the hotel.

We've always loved historic places in England and the Mermaid oozes charm and history.

Everything about this historic hotel is perfect.

Well we were blown away when we entered this historic room.

Took my husband away for his birthday we had the best time all the staff are very friendly and extremely helpful.

One of the bar members was lets say less than friendly and  made our visit to the bar a rather negative experience.

Booking was efficient and friendly,follow up enquiries were dealt with in a helpful and effient manner.Violet was exceptional,our reserved parking space was welcome after a long journey it is a tight car park.Dallas the porter was loving his job,and it showed.

Every member of staff that helped us or spoke to us during our stay were extremely friendly, polite and courteous and an absolute credit to the hotel which made our stayed even more enjoyable.

It was large room and had a great double bed with excellent bathroom and toilet facilities

I t was great speaking once again to friendly staff members at the Mermaid like Emma, Barbara, Violet, and Dave.

From the warm friendly welcome at reception, the helpful smiley person that shows us to our room helping with luggage, to the bar and restaurant staff, everyone is a delight.

If the management want to charge top prices they should listen to customers critiques and improve things instead of banging on about the history of the place and accusing people of lying .

but I thought it was the most disappointing meal that I have ever paid £45 for (2 courses).

For the money we paid (and when comparing with other hotels on our trip), we might have expected a higher quality breakfast and a bit more luxury in the room eg in terms of products.

but were unlucky with timing and having a long car, so had to park ten minutes walk away at a very cheap rate.

but none of the other tables were then subsequently given toast which made us think this was done deliberately as a cost cutting excercise.

Breakfast was average for the price being paid.

The day after checking out my wife realised she'd left something in our room, when she rang the hotel they confirmed that they had it and arranged to post it back to her, refusing her offer to pay the postage.

Changed from the much cheaper Rye  Lodge at the last minute, still not sure if I made the right decision!!

At these prices I would have expected it.

Generally, at £180 a night, I felt it was too expensive for what is on offer.

but our room was definitely overpriced for the facilities.

Thanks to I assume, a lack of foreign tourists the room rate is lower.

I say all this due to the price they charge for one night, over £200!!

Anyone who stays here and complains about the floorboard sounds, the architecture or the prices do not get the point!

No doubt the lack of sleep did not help when, on arrival for breakfast at 9 am, we were again hived off to a (different) side room to eat.In the event we felt it was really too late to rescue anything at the hotel after such a poor overall experience and left to pay for breakfast elsewhere,

I paid 90 pounds per night with breakfast.

I was concerned that noise may be an issue and it was not at all.

On the second night it still splashed loudly until 11.00

Thin walls and creaky floorboards (and the guests above us had feet like elephants), small windows not admitting much air - rather uncomfortable in the midst of a heatwave.

Standard rooms are in noisy areas or in an annexe with no real character.

Yes the walls are a little thin and you can sometimes hear your neighbour, not sure when it was built sound proofing was high on the list so it’s all part of the experience.

The churn of constant tourists will not dent the revenue of the hotel,

either in rooms or mini fridges on landings near more than one room.

Only thing spooky we had was strange knocking noises in the morning - it came from different directions so we couldn’t pin point it to anyones bedroom??

There was some morning and daytime conversation noise, which you could hear in this room,

We decided to eat in the town, not the hotel as perhaps a bit too formal and quiet for us,

You will hear creaking of the floorboards and people talking in adjoining rooms/corridors at times

The floorboards creaked as did all the floorboards in the building so when people were going to be and getting up in the morning there was a bit of noise

but it didn't matter as we didn't spend a lot of time in it but it was over the kitchen/bar area so a bi noisy especially when they emptied loads of bottles into thee bins!

but that was not really a problem as it closes at 11pm and most guests are quiet anyway.

inwardly gloating at the bumper to bumper traffic that we sailed passed on our 6 mile return walk with a couple of hours sunbathing inbetween.

Because it’s a very old hotel dating back to the 13th century then please be aware that the floorboards can creak and that you can hear other guests at times

The walls are extremely thin, and the floorboards creak which all adds to the atmospherics.

This hotel is seriously ancient and old, so if creaky floorboards, a lack  of insulation, sound proofing and luxurious plumbing bothers you, then you might be happier elsewhere.

The plumbing has a mind of its own and there’s no soundproofing between any of the rooms.

but the noise from the floorboards above was a nightmare, you could also hear every, word, cough, water systems emptying.

The bar offers good ales, a bar food menu and is particularly popular in the warmer weather where the tables outside are busy.

We enjoyed a drink and eating in the bar both evenings in front of the magnificent log fire.

Staff were so friendly, the bar meals were excellent.

As usual the food was excellent, atmosphere was great in the hotel, restaurant and bar, all the staff very helpful and willing to do as much as they can for us.

We had a meal in the bar which was delicious.

We had dinner in the restaurant and was able to have bar food or the set menu, we had a starter from set menu and bar food for our main and thoroughly enjoyed it.

We ate from the bar menu which was very good and more to our taste than the restaurant menu.

Bar food good, dinner menu didn’t appeal and pricey.

This is a gorgeous hotel that oozes charm and history, the staff are attentive and charming from check inn to the restaurant and bar staff.

Delayed break,but well worth the wait, excellent helpful staff, breakfast, dinner and bar meals very good.

If you like very old buildings with lots of history, ghosts , creaking floor boards , quite noisy slopping floors lots of character, in a lovely st with perfect staff , l mean very friendly staff , great bar food and excellent resturant food in a great little town near one of the best beaches in England  then this is for you had a great two nights here , should go here

We ate from the bar menu sitting near the enormous fireplace.

We only had 1 main meal in the lounge bar and it was the best chicken burger I have every had.

We had our meal in the bar with a corner table which was provided by request as our restaurant booking was booked too late for us

If I returned to Rye I would definitely visit The Mermaid Inn for the lovely fireplace in their bar and likely for a meal too,

Breakfast was lovely, and a quick lunch in the bar was also good.

but the food at the bar was nice (we're vegetarian).

The bar meals were interesting and ample.

The breakfast is to die for the poached eggs cooked to perfection, red hot tea in a proper pot, champagne Buck’s Fizz for breakfast, no problem, room service for anything… no problem all keen to help, nothing too much problem, thanks to all your staff who made our visit to Rye perfect.

The staff is what makes this hotel so amazing though.

but the receptionist was keen to ensure we secured a space, maybe after seeing that my sister has mobility issues.

The place is beautiful full of history, staff went to a lot of effort to explain the history.

Called the hotel and explained the situation they was super and have pursponed our room booking and will be sending an email to confirm that we are so great full for this and being so helpful  and understanding about a situation which is out of our controls much appreciated to the hotel and staff.

beautiful place to stay in a very quiet little town,comfy beds and lovely staff especially katrina she was very helpful helping my daughter find a quiet place to eat and drink,ging back next year for a longer stay.

We have noted some comments about reception staff and agree - in our experience they were perfunctory and overly relied on calling other staff to complete our needs.

The restaurant staff at breakfast were great as was the chap who arranged for a car to be moved so we could extricate ourselves from the small car park.

stayed in room 1 (james room)and was hoping to see some ghost activity..nothing happened what a beautiful place and full of history.full English in the morning and the staff were fantastic.Rye itself is well worth a visit.

Clean, well maintained, great staff in every department, easy, relaxed, professional, amazing food, good wine list, and unique areas to sit and absorb the atmosphere.

But, overall, a fabulous stay,at a unique,charming, beautiful old hotel, fabulously furnished with great housekeeping too.

The hotel is so unique to anywhere else we’ve stayed, a lovely atmosphere and such a fab position, we enjoyed some lovely walks round the cobbled streets especially at dusk.

We are staying in the Glover suite and are delighted 😃.The staff individualise the guest experience unique to every guest staying at the Mermaid Inn.

We loved the beer battered fish and chips (proper fish fillets) here , as well as the Mermaid ale, which is unique to this place.

The setting is very unique of the area and it has a lovely ambience to it (it helped that it was a rainy miserable night) For the mains we had the Seabass Risotto and the Fillet of Beef.

The place is steeped in history, and has a wonderfully unique atmosphere.

The room feels unique and the area around the hotel is great.

The Mermaid Inn is one of the most interesting and unique hotels I have stayed in.

The Mermaid Inn has an unique history dating back to the twelfth century and is an architectural icon within the citadel of the Cinque port of Rye.

Later in the evening, I thoroughly enjoyed a few beers in the Giants Fireplace and its unique surroundings.

A great place to relax and unwind in very comfy setting.Delicious food served by very attentive staff and the best breakfast by far, Situated in the heart of Rye offering a wealth of character, a truly unique experience and our second visit in the last six months ,

If youre looking for a special treat and something quirky, unique, the mermaid inn is certainly the place to stay.

The whole experience was unique and we shall return.

Overall a unique stay  in well known historic hotel.

Apparently, they boasted about their next assignment in the bar which undoubtedly has a unique atmosphere and serves a range of well-presented, local ales.

or go stay at a Travel lodge/bland multi corporate heap and leave us connoissuers to submerse ourselves in the unique ambience and history that is The Mermaid.

The radiator had a major leak so the carpet was wet through, the shower controls leaked & the bath waste blocked, the bathroom extract didn’t work.

but worst of all it was very very cold when we arrived, with just 3 small portable heaters.

but were told when leaving that there was air con in the room which again no evidence or info in room provided.

Beer ran out in bar, no phone or air con in room.

There is a useless fan and windows that dont open very far at all.

Breakfast was nothing special and room had no air con.

but by 2am is was 24c according to my app and outside it was 11c not the hottest night just couldn't sleep even with the fan on.

The other problem was with the a/c which I turn off at night.

Went back to the hotel hopeful for a nice dinner absolutely shocking excuse for a halloumi burger (the 1 sheet off lettuce was bigger that the 1 slice of halloumi) 45 minutes waiting for our food, staff were not very attentive and due to all doors and windows open for covid reasons it was absolutely freezing.

but upon arrival we found that there was no Air Conditioning in our room, simply a fan that was stuffed in the wardrobe.

This was after a night we could hardly sleep as the room was uncomfortably hot due to three radiators on and only one window working partially in an attempt to bake us.

No heating in function room, long wait for food which was cold, waiting staff were appalling.

Room was freezing, apparently the heating had broken down 2 days before. .

The venue was absolutely freezing cold and on complaining to the duty manager I was advised that the heating had been broken for the last two days,  I was surprised to hear that the management thought it acceptable for guests to sit in their coats for the entire evening rather than to either relocate or cancel the evening.

The interior spa pool had missing tiles and the windows  in the pool area (including the internal windows) were running with condensation showing that the air handling wasn’t designed correctly.

Heating left on full boiling in bed all night.

Large amount of hair (including skin attached) found in the bed and room overlooked the bin area and I was kept awake all night with the hum of air con units situated outside the window.

No air conditioning meant it was like sleeping in a sauna!!

The food was great, friendly staff and nice room.

We had a friendly welcome to the hotel and impeccable service throughout our stay.

Included in our package was a 2 course evening meal which was to a very high standard, restaurant staff like all the staff were very friendly and made our break really enjoyable, breakfast in the morning was a buffet with a great selection of cooked and continental.

The reception staff were fantastic under a very friendly, approachable manager, they all helped us with everything we needed and more.

Luckily we caught a bus back and the lady driver was so so friendly to us and stopped right outside our hotel.

The accommodation is comfortable; the staff friendly and helpful.

The room was spacious and very clean and all the staff we met were very friendly.

I took my partner here for her 50th Birthday escape, we had the most pleasant stay, and each and every member of staff that we spoke to gave us the most courteous and friendly response ensuring we had the most enjoyable time.
