Spacious rooms, comfortable beds and helpful, friendly staff who helped with everything from reserving tables at restaurants to showing us where the bus stop was.

On arrival the reception staff were efficient and friendly, and able to sort out some secure parking around the corner from the hotel premises.

Ladies at the reception not very friendly , no English or French which is surprising if you are in the tourism business !

As it is the norm with the brand, the Parador staff is very friendly and helpful.

If you like to wait during a 5 minute phone call by reception (before checking in) on why the other parador referred you to their sister parador (this one) with a wrong room price.

And on top of all that the bells in the clock tower next door were ringing the quarters all night long.

Just remember that the church bell chimes hours, it can be quite a wake up call.

Avoid rooms facing the square if you're bothered by ringing bells - having gotten used to the snoring and roosters and general noise of albergues on the Camino we were fine with that room.

The bells in the tower rings twice an hour throughout the night and woke me up each time.

but no one stayed there so you had to call for assistance.

but she begged ignorance and said she would check and call back.

However, the Parador at Santo Domingo de la Calzada is the one with the nicest and most attentive staff of all the Paradors we have been to (they tried calling and emailing us to inform us ahead that there will be a wedding in the hotel during our visit and it could be noisy

Our room was fine except for a persistent smell from the bathroom drains, solved by running water into the system.

but have a nice view of the church and tower, and if one has the window open, cigarette smoke from those smoking below will come into the room.

although personally I would prefer if they would not allow smoking there, especially cigars. .

They used an Ozone machine which smelled heavily of Chlorine.

Breakfast was sadly lacking, stale coffee and indifference to request for fresh.

Breakfast was disgusting, the ham and salami etc was off and the smell of it was disgusting.

He made it quite clear that he found us to be disgusting flithy pilgrims.

The couches in the lounge are worn and smell of the times when one could smoke indoors.

it smells deliciously like black licorice in there.

However the seating outside reeked of tobacco smell.

The Parador is exceptionally well located in the historical centre of Santo Domingo.

Rooms are spacious and clean, staff is great, parking just down the street.

The check-in staff will provide you with two tokens to access the parking lots which is about 70 metres away.

Very helpful staff who welcomed us as perrigrinos which tells me that their focus is on the quality of the experience for every guest not just based on who you are.

We had a room overlooking the square and it was quiet with a great view of the Bell Tower and the cathedral's south transept.

The garage is easily accessed through the Parador reception and is very convenient.

Rooms were spacious and clean, staff was great, parking just down the street from el Parador !

After a while I returned to reception, had to wait to speak with someone and was given the same instructions!

although driving up to bollards and waiting for them to lower is a bit challenging.

We were also dissapointed when we had to wait for our room, as it was not ready on our arrival.

We like  to get up early and get a head start on the day's walk so did not want to wait until the Parador dining room opened.

After waiting for awhile, we went to the bar and asked for service.

I had to hunt down my order after some 10 minutes of waiting for it to arrive so the pleasure of having a nightcap in the atmospheric and handsome hotel lounge was somewhat blunted.Given that there was only one other couple in the place at the time, this was rather disappointing.

but not worth more than a night - move on to the next parador - but right across the street is the cathedral with its famous birds - wait till you get there for the story!

One could choose between automatic HVAC or open windows.

Not all that  comfortable especially if you have  a major function to perform  and the heating panel is  on and there is no extraction fan in the toil.

There is no aircon so blocking them out is impossible.

however, as it did not have air conditioning, I requested that we move to a smaller room that did as I don't tolerate the heat well.

But above all it is the care and attention of staff towards the quality of  food and service, that sets this hotel apart.

A special thank you to 'Pablo' our waiter for the last 2 nights who was very professional, efficient and patient with our lack of Spanish.

Within just a couple of days we found ourselves on a first name basis with staff.

The staff was very attentive and helpful, the rooms were clean and comfortable and the town was charming.

The emphasis is on relaxation with a cosy service that is professional and dedicated.

I can't really find fault this hotel - the room was clean, staff very helpful, breakfast was delicious and the location was superb.

In San Sebastian everyone seems a bit rushed and jaded given they are primarily serving hordes of (mostly American) tourists who have fought for months to get a table.

There are other restaurants we used in town with hours that are suitable for American tourists who eat between 7-9.

Although the room was neat and tidy and had old world charm it had no aircon or a fan.With temperatures in the mid thirties it made sleeping very uncomfortable.The front desk staf really were not friendly or welcoming and the staff at breakfast were unfriendly to the point of being rude.

It is to hot during the day to not have some type of AC.

The parador has no air conditioning so this was completely unacceptable.

The day we arrived it was very hot and there is no air conditioning in the rooms - the other days were cooler and we were able to sleep with the windows open.

There is no air conditioning in the bedrooms.

What is unforgivable is that there are no electric fans available for guests.

Strangely, one was blowing in the housekeeping room down the hall.

The only small minus was that it didn't have some kind of airco or fan,but before going to the restaurant in the evening we opened the window and it cooled down sufficiently.

but would have preferred AC on a hot July evening.

BTW the main difference we were told be tween this parador and the other one in town is that the latter has air conditioning.

As others have mentioned there was no air conditioning and unfortunately no window in the bedroom (there was in the sitting room) to allow good airflow.

The only reason I can think of that would make sense for this Parador to have only 3 stars is that it doesn't have air conditioning.

No air conditioning meant our room was quite warm as it faced the setting sun, and opening the windows was not great because the staff took their breaks on the ground two floors below our windows, so we were treated to their smoke.

In this tiny town there are actually 2 paradores, Spain’s answer to save historical monuments while providing 4-5 star service to guests.

No smoking in the cloisters despite being open to the elements meant that guests smoked in front of the building.

but I expect a hotel of this caliber to offer them in the morning, especially for those guests who are leaving and do not have time for breakfast.

Pity staff could not communicate with the clients 80% of whom were English.The staff are young.

With Parador room rates falling in recession hit Spain you would think they would have the sense to obtain more share of the client’s spend with more appropriate food offerings.

The staff were great and being there for the end of the fiesta was a bonus.

We found the parador and our room very comfortable and the staff excellent.

Day 10 of my Camino and the first hotel  or small pension, where we have stayed , where the reception staff where so not interested.

Our room was serviceable, had a nice view out to a garden which actually belonged to the assisted living facility next door.

Parador Santo Domingo Bernardo is a good hotel with fine service in a nice small village, which is not as interesting as described in a lot of communications.

The reception service was not as good as at the Paradores de Caceres.

The front desk was very apologetic for our situation.

The staff are quite reserved and a bit unforthcoming.

The bad: breakfast was at the lower end of the three star spectrum with very limited choices and surly service.

We spent two nights at this parador, and like others, don't really understand why it is only a 3 Star.

Rather amazingly, smoking was allowed in our room, for which they get only 4 instead of 5 stars.

This is one of two Parador's in a small town; the other one (Santo Domingo de la Calzada) is better known and has 4 stars rather than the 3 stars given to this Parador.

For us "big city" dwellers, it was an added luxury to be able to sleep with the window open at night and there wasn't a sound outside. Marvellous!

Although once we had closed the windows and shutters it was very hot in the room.

We had a room with a window that overlooked the square in front of the hotel.

however the one we were offered had an internal bedroom with no window.

The final celebration went on until 4am and we could hear every bit of it through the open window.

I did notice one or two cheap touches like the white plastic electric sockets and I didn't like the curtain pole much

Dani, his mother and the staff were very friendly and helped us schedule a visit at an excellent winery.

Owners and staff were outgoing, friendly and every request met with immediate response.

Besides the fact that the hotel is a former palace with very spacious and royally decorated rooms, it's very quiet, the breakfast pastries are almost completely home baked by the wife, and the owners bend over to accommodate.

Read the other reviews,  it's perfect (except maybe for the church bells).

The smell was so strong that we considered not using the bathroom.

though missed out on coffee as we couldn’t use the machine after being quickly shown by the young man on duty, no hot water available for tea as far as could see.

Water in the fridge, sweets and numerous quality toiletries replenished after the first night.

Everything had been carefully thought out, even down to the  extensive range of toiletries supplied in the bathroom, and bottled water in the minibar.

Difficult to find somewhere in the Village to eat as the restaurant behind the Hotel was closed in the evening and other cafe a little further down the road was not good and they over charged us!

Toni looked after us during the day & went out of her way to fix us an amazing Spanish supper one night when the attached restaurant was closed.

but beware, most places are closed weekday evening.

Any way, I went to the hotel at a later time (10 pm) and observed that door was closed and no phone contact number was fixed on the door.

The hotel's own restaurant was closed for the night, so we didn't have anywhere to eat in.

The restaurant in the hotel grounds was closed for the duration of our stay and there is nowhere else in Tirgo that serves food (that we found!).

Unfortunately things were just a little below parr, the staff were very friendly and helpful
