The included breakfast was diverse enough to satisfy the hungriest and fussiest of travellers.

The morning breakfast provided the usual good selection expected in a high standard hotel.

but our experience of the kitchen at breakfast and for a light supper was good.

Just remember that the church bell chimes hours, it can be quite a wake up call.

Avoid rooms facing the square if you're bothered by ringing bells - having gotten used to the snoring and roosters and general noise of albergues on the Camino we were fine with that room.

The bells in the tower rings twice an hour throughout the night and woke me up each time.

but no one stayed there so you had to call for assistance.

but she begged ignorance and said she would check and call back.

However, the Parador at Santo Domingo de la Calzada is the one with the nicest and most attentive staff of all the Paradors we have been to (they tried calling and emailing us to inform us ahead that there will be a wedding in the hotel during our visit and it could be noisy

Our room was fine except for a persistent smell from the bathroom drains, solved by running water into the system.

but have a nice view of the church and tower, and if one has the window open, cigarette smoke from those smoking below will come into the room.

although personally I would prefer if they would not allow smoking there, especially cigars. .

They used an Ozone machine which smelled heavily of Chlorine.

Breakfast was sadly lacking, stale coffee and indifference to request for fresh.

Breakfast was disgusting, the ham and salami etc was off and the smell of it was disgusting.

He made it quite clear that he found us to be disgusting flithy pilgrims.

The couches in the lounge are worn and smell of the times when one could smoke indoors.

it smells deliciously like black licorice in there.

However the seating outside reeked of tobacco smell.

After a while I returned to reception, had to wait to speak with someone and was given the same instructions!

although driving up to bollards and waiting for them to lower is a bit challenging.

We were also dissapointed when we had to wait for our room, as it was not ready on our arrival.

We like  to get up early and get a head start on the day's walk so did not want to wait until the Parador dining room opened.

After waiting for awhile, we went to the bar and asked for service.

I had to hunt down my order after some 10 minutes of waiting for it to arrive so the pleasure of having a nightcap in the atmospheric and handsome hotel lounge was somewhat blunted.Given that there was only one other couple in the place at the time, this was rather disappointing.

but not worth more than a night - move on to the next parador - but right across the street is the cathedral with its famous birds - wait till you get there for the story!

Breakfast again match dinner with a choice of cooked eggs and a wide continental selection.

On arrival we got the grand tour during which the history of the palacio was explained to us plus the location of the breakfast room that has some spirits that could be accessed on an honor basis.

The desserts were over-the-top gorgeous and delicious!

Buffet breakfast was excellent, including made to order eggs and omelets.

The hotel has so much vintage charm, and the breakfast was absolutely delicious!

Everything inside the room was thoughtfully and beautifully arranged, breakfast prepared by the hostess was delicious, parking was plentiful, the location, 11 minutes drive from Haro, was pretty convenient.

The breakfast was wonderful with meat, cheeses, breads and then homemade apple cake, yogurt cake, and whatever else the owner decides to make!

The room we stayed was large well furnished and typical of a Spanish palace.The delicious breakfast was served in a magnificent dining room.

A good night's sleep was sure to follow and then onto breakfast - a sumptuous buffet of fruits, meats, cheeses, and pastries (the Leche Frita is one of the best sweets I have ever tasted); and a plate of bacon and glorious eggs.

Breakfast in the morning was very god and "mama"was the best.

Breakfast was excellent with eggs and bacon freshly cooked to order and a great range of other food on the buffet.

The smell was so strong that we considered not using the bathroom.

though missed out on coffee as we couldn’t use the machine after being quickly shown by the young man on duty, no hot water available for tea as far as could see.

Water in the fridge, sweets and numerous quality toiletries replenished after the first night.

Everything had been carefully thought out, even down to the  extensive range of toiletries supplied in the bathroom, and bottled water in the minibar.

Although the room was neat and tidy and had old world charm it had no aircon or a fan.With temperatures in the mid thirties it made sleeping very uncomfortable.The front desk staf really were not friendly or welcoming and the staff at breakfast were unfriendly to the point of being rude.

It is to hot during the day to not have some type of AC.

The parador has no air conditioning so this was completely unacceptable.

The day we arrived it was very hot and there is no air conditioning in the rooms - the other days were cooler and we were able to sleep with the windows open.

There is no air conditioning in the bedrooms.

What is unforgivable is that there are no electric fans available for guests.

Strangely, one was blowing in the housekeeping room down the hall.

The only small minus was that it didn't have some kind of airco or fan,but before going to the restaurant in the evening we opened the window and it cooled down sufficiently.

but would have preferred AC on a hot July evening.

BTW the main difference we were told be tween this parador and the other one in town is that the latter has air conditioning.

As others have mentioned there was no air conditioning and unfortunately no window in the bedroom (there was in the sitting room) to allow good airflow.

The only reason I can think of that would make sense for this Parador to have only 3 stars is that it doesn't have air conditioning.

No air conditioning meant our room was quite warm as it faced the setting sun, and opening the windows was not great because the staff took their breaks on the ground two floors below our windows, so we were treated to their smoke.

The location is perfect as it is right on the Camino at the end of the town so you feel as if you are getting a head start the next morning after breakfast.

The breakfast was excellent, with an extensive array of fruits, breads, meats, cheeses, etc.

but you have to find a spot - was never a problem for us. Excellent breakfast with variety of choices for all palates (jamon, tostadas, cheeses, pastries, plenty of fresh fruit, etc.)

In this tiny town there are actually 2 paradores, Spain’s answer to save historical monuments while providing 4-5 star service to guests.

No smoking in the cloisters despite being open to the elements meant that guests smoked in front of the building.

but I expect a hotel of this caliber to offer them in the morning, especially for those guests who are leaving and do not have time for breakfast.

Pity staff could not communicate with the clients 80% of whom were English.The staff are young.

With Parador room rates falling in recession hit Spain you would think they would have the sense to obtain more share of the client’s spend with more appropriate food offerings.

The bad: breakfast was at the lower end of the three star spectrum with very limited choices and surly service.

We spent two nights at this parador, and like others, don't really understand why it is only a 3 Star.

Rather amazingly, smoking was allowed in our room, for which they get only 4 instead of 5 stars.

This is one of two Parador's in a small town; the other one (Santo Domingo de la Calzada) is better known and has 4 stars rather than the 3 stars given to this Parador.

For us "big city" dwellers, it was an added luxury to be able to sleep with the window open at night and there wasn't a sound outside. Marvellous!

Although once we had closed the windows and shutters it was very hot in the room.

We had a room with a window that overlooked the square in front of the hotel.

however the one we were offered had an internal bedroom with no window.

The final celebration went on until 4am and we could hear every bit of it through the open window.

I did notice one or two cheap touches like the white plastic electric sockets and I didn't like the curtain pole much

One could choose between automatic HVAC or open windows.

Not all that  comfortable especially if you have  a major function to perform  and the heating panel is  on and there is no extraction fan in the toil.

There is no aircon so blocking them out is impossible.

however, as it did not have air conditioning, I requested that we move to a smaller room that did as I don't tolerate the heat well.

Great food, both the breakfast spread and dining experiences.

From the moment we arrived at reception, the personal service at breakfast from Virginia and dinner at El Portal, we were made to feel like really special guests.

Breakfast was also very good, all served at the table in our visit as there were so few guests.

The has a beautiful terrace where the breakfast is served.

Echuarren Tradicion was very good utilizing very high quality ingredients.

I can't really find fault this hotel - the room was clean, staff very helpful, breakfast was delicious and the location was superb.

Also the tasting breakfast is well worth a try.

The hotel also has a tasting menu for breakfast, which is very high quality and will quickly fill you up!

No trip to Echaurren would be complete without also experiencing the delights of the breakfast degustation menu served on the beautiful, sunny, tranquil terrace.

In San Sebastian everyone seems a bit rushed and jaded given they are primarily serving hordes of (mostly American) tourists who have fought for months to get a table.

There are other restaurants we used in town with hours that are suitable for American tourists who eat between 7-9.

Breakfast is a must if staying, and is a wonderful experience.

Our breakfast was prepared by Cintia each morning & was delicious.

The "breakfast included" was enormous and varied, including cooked-to-order eggs and sweet or ham and cheese crepes.

Staff is exceptional, rooms are nice and clean and breakfast is outstanding.

The free breakfast was delicious and incredibly generous.

The hotel has a restaurant which serves a delicious 3 course dinner as well as breakfast.

Difficult to find somewhere in the Village to eat as the restaurant behind the Hotel was closed in the evening and other cafe a little further down the road was not good and they over charged us!

Toni looked after us during the day & went out of her way to fix us an amazing Spanish supper one night when the attached restaurant was closed.

but beware, most places are closed weekday evening.

Any way, I went to the hotel at a later time (10 pm) and observed that door was closed and no phone contact number was fixed on the door.

The hotel's own restaurant was closed for the night, so we didn't have anywhere to eat in.

The restaurant in the hotel grounds was closed for the duration of our stay and there is nowhere else in Tirgo that serves food (that we found!).

The restaurant at the hotel is only open weekends off-season and we had to drive 15 minutes to Haro and return in the dark, which we usually try to avoid.

As a final resort, I sent a self addressed envelope to the manager together with a 5 euro note to cover the cost of postage.

After finding another hotel, I contact Mr. Fernando, supposedly the manager, and I was at this time able to establish a dialog, were he seemed to understand the delay.

After several phone calls and emails the manager confirmed that he had our driving licences at the hotel

I take issue with the Trip Advisor reviewer who caviled about the breakfast.

We were the only guests in the hotel for the first 2 nights, and it was not noisy at all.

So I guess remote rural settings are not for everyone, and it also depends on the mood of the guest as to what kind of review is posted.

It's a shame the hotel doesn't have a restaurant as I'm sure they would do a really good trade from the clients.

With only 13 bedrooms - life in this hotel is quite intimate, and we hardly saw another guest - they were there -
