I was reading reviews on TripAdvisor and noticed someone mentioned the room did not have aircon.

Only problem for us was that the room was so warm (in winter, with thermostat adjusted and windows open) that we did not sleep well at all.

We (including or children) definatley embraced the age and character of the structure, including the small 100 year old elevator and old radiator heaters in each room.

There is no air conditioning in the rooms.

To stop them from doing this you would need to turn the radiator off which then meant there was no heating in the room.

Heating and windows are a bit old school,

If there was a negative to report it would be the lack of AC,

It did get stuffy in the room due to lack of air conditioning.

When we arrived my only initial concern was the lack of air conditioning, due to arriving during an unseasonal warm spell.

As people have pointed out, there is no A/C in the room.

but as an old building in SF you need to know it doesn't have air conditioning.

Things you should know: there is no air conditioning (as a girl of the South this seemed heretical),

As there is no air conditioning, we'd leave the windows open at night and use the hotel provided white noise machine in our room to offset the small increase in noise from the street.

We did not enjoy our room, an interior room on the second floor, as it was quite small, had zero ventilation as evidenced by the two large fans blaring when we entered the room.

There were hairline cracks in our sink, no AC, older televisions that didn't work properly and very limited sound proofing -- we could clearly hear other guests closing doors and talking.

The evening cheese and wine hosted by Catherine was a great way to start a night out and we thoroughly enjoyed all the wines we sampled.

Wonderful evening California wine reception with cheeses, charcuterie, fresh fruit available every evening from 5-7pm.

The food is first class, at breakfast and the happy hour  is much more than just wine and cheese.

The nightly wine, cheese, and a lot more was plenty of dinner for us also in the dinning room.

Complimentary breakfasts were better than most hotel choices, and the complimentary daily wine and cheese (plus many other dishes) from 5pm to 6:30pm was fanstastic.

There are delicious ripe berries, breads, pastries, eggs, meats, cheeses, cereals, juices and smoothies.

Our highlight being John's evening selections from the excellent array of local wines and cheeses.

The complimentary breakfast is amazing, with homemade scones and other pastries, bacon, fruit, smoked salmon, cheese, etc., etc., etc., plus the world's best coffee!

The breakfast is quite a spread,  including a selection of smoked salmon, meats and cheeses, along with an excellent selection of fresh fruit and baked goods.

For breakfast besides a beautiful spread of yummy pastries, fruits, cheeses, yogurt and granola, they also had fresh made smoothies and juices.

The cocktail hour with wine, cheeses, and hot dish were good by most standards,

2) free tea and coffee downstairs (and apples) 3) amazing breakfast buffet - beautifully presented and served in a lovely light airy room - huge choice even scones and clotted cream for breakfast 4) fantastic free wine and cheese in the late afternoon -

She was delighted when we arrived and was even more so once we had been served complimentary wine and cheese in the dining room.

Great service and staff, very clean and quiet, delicious breakfast and predinner wines with cheeses and fruit.

Rolls, bagels, a vast array of the good stuff, i.e., cheeses, smoked fish, avocados, juices, marmalade, etc., etc.--of course Oh, do you want a latte?

fruits, fish, meats cheeses , breads and even handcrafted preserves.

Fresh baked muffins and scones, Fresh Berries and healthy cereal,  Eggs and  smoked salmon, a full cheese selection and fresh squeezed juices. Outstanding.

All of this was complimentary as well as an evening happy hour with wine, cheese and a nice charcuterie.

Each day there was an excellent selection of wines (changed daily) and an array of cheeses, charcuterie, fruit and a hot hors d’oeuvre.

The hotels runs happy hour with wine, cheese and salami, food is served in real China with linen napkins, rooms are spacious, bathroom has underfloor heating, water and fruits in room are complimentary.

The room was luxurious with a comfy king bed, large bathroom and turn down service with yummy chocolate shortbread cookies!

Our room was gorgeous and luxurious, with amazing views of the city.

but one of the best in America, offering European-level elegance and sophistication and a warm, professional staff.

This hotel is absolutely the definition of quiet luxury.

The closet includes two high-end umbrellas as well as clothing brushes and a long-handled shoe horn.

The Hotel Drisco is the perfect combination of Old World elegance, friendly coziness, and modern conveniences.

The elegance and special attention to every detail  to staff, room, location and at that time it had a restaurant.

The bed was very comfortable and the bathrroom was luxurious marble, with heated floors.

I've stayed at Hotel Drisco Pacific Heights on two occasions now (over the past 6 months), and I have been very pleased both times.

I was delighted to discovery this amazing, quaint hotel in Pacific Heights when visiting my son.

The Hotel Drisco is a lovely boutique hotel in the nice Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco.

And the location is beautiful among the mansions of Pacific Heights.

We are well traveled and stay at top resorts around the world and this boutique hotel in Pacific Heights blew me away.

The Hotel Drisco Pacific Heights in San Francisco, a Woodside Hotel Group property, is housed in a gorgeous estate building constructed in 1903.

Its located in peaceful, Pacific Heights among some of the most gorgeous homes in the city.

The location is just perfect among the Pacific Heights neighborhood, near beautiful parks and a wonderful area to walk with all the old Victorian architecture.

This hotel is the most perfect place to stay in San Francisco.

The buffet breakfast and wine happy hour with appetizers are fantastic.

The wine flows freely and you can make a meal out of the variety of appetizers that are available.

and the evening wine reception (some of the best California wines) could easily serve as dinner.

Beautifully updated rooms, amazing breakfast, 5:00pm wine, heavy hor dourves.

Coffee-and-biscotti service in the charming parlor at 3 pm is a delightful touch. The wine buffet from 5-7 offer an opportunity to sample local wines, and the expansive breakfast includes a choice of eggs cooked to your specifications (best soft-cooked eggs ever!)

They have a terrific buffet breakfast with eggs served just the way you like them and a buffet wine tasting from 5-7.

The  Breakfast options are plentiful and delicious, and the wine and appetizers in the evening are a great way to end a day touring around.

The hotel breakfast was excellent for healthy options and the evening wine was fun and enjoyable.

The Hotel Drisco breakfast buffet is superior in every way as well as the daily wine reception.

The evening wine tasting at 5pm and the included breakfast are both marvelous and frankly, grand.

The wine happy hour can be your evening meal there is so much to eat.

The staff is attentive The complementary breakfast and 5 pm wine and hors d'oeuvres are rare offerings in today's hotels.

Bed had bloody stained sheets, air conditioner didn't work and charged $15 for snack pack which contains $3 worth of water and candy.

Not a fan of valet parking (or the unfriendly attendants) - we were on a road trip so felt trapped without our car as we like to explore the surrounding suburbs.

Our room was in the "historic building" - historic is code for:
- Your air conditioner and heater won't work
- Your shampoo bottle will be empty.

The whole room is old and very tired, the heating or a/c is very noisy.

Things to improve: mainly the air heating, very noisy and uneven, parts of the room were tropics, parts North Pole (well, not really).

I tried to adjust the AC and it didn’t work, I couldn’t turn it off, or adjust the temperature and it was quite noisy at night.

Initially given a room that seemed a little worn out with aircon that was struggling.

The only very very minor downfall is that the room’s air conditioning system was a bit on the old side and required some time to figure out and the bath was not big, and no disconnecting shower head, I guess I’m more of a Shower guy than a Bath, some would disagree with me.

When we entered the room it was a bad smelling from the ventilation system.

The aircon didnt work in the room either which made it uncomfortable and humid.

however given the amount of feedback about non working ac they were just going thru the motions.

Also check your room is not next to the adjacent building roof top AC systems otherwise the noise will be even worse.

The "AC" or climate control is not real, i don't think, b/c it didn't work.

Unfortunately,  the AC did not work, housekeeping stole our pc and the overall condition of the hotel was dodgy and musty.

No fridge, no mini bar, shower has shower curtain (no shower doors), thermostat is from 90s and only has “heater, cooler, fan high, fan low” (literally - that’s all).

The system didin't have a switch to go from heat to AC so there wasn't any way to control the temperature adequately.

Air conditioning/heating was a little temperamental and required some subtle persuasion to get going.

Brilliant location on Union Square for tour bus.

This hotel is located close to public transportation, restaurants, shopping malls and also where one could join tour buses at Union Square.

A wonderful location beside union square, the cable cars and the bus routes.

City bus hop on hop off tour 3 minutes away.

Hotel in a very good location for cable car and bus tours.

Most bus routes stopped nearby and cable car at end of the street.

Also had room service & the pasta with grilled prawns was delicious 
This hotel is also located just down from the main pick up for all tour bus.

I can say the hotel is in a really good location, close to both Union Square (shops and the starting point of the sightseeing buses) and one of the tram lines ( the one that takes you to Lombard Street).

The hotel is well located at Union Square, with the hop on hop off buses all leaving from there.

We took a tour bus that was just outside hotel as well.

Also, the tour bus companies have a stop right across the street from the hotel so that was convenient as well.

Lots of transport options including the hop on, hop off buses, the cable car and the BART - all within 5 Mins.

The hotel was well situated for walking around San Francisco and just down the road was the pick up point for the Hop on hop off bus.

The hotel is perfectly situated in Union Square, close to hop on hop off buses, the iconic cable cars and most tourist attractions in San Francisco.

Close to tour buses and the famous San Fran Trams.

The hotel is very close to all shopping and bus tours for the tourist.

Food ok.  ..Great location if using the open top tour bus.

Perfectly located for Union Square, trams, Hop on Hop off buses and taxi rank - basically easy to get everywhere.

Close to cable cars, union square (obviously) and the various tour busses.

The location was extremely  convenient  for catching the Big Bus tour, the trolley  car, and even restaurants  and small markets where we could buy items to stock the refrigerator  with light breakfast items.

While it is not the most luxurious hotel, it is very clean and the service is excellent.

Overall, we felt very taken care of, even a little luxurious (I believe we were in a king room, as it was very large with a couch and walk in closet).

I recommend this hotel if you are on a budget and willing to sacrifice super luxurious over perfectly acceptable.

Rooms in the new building are spacious and those in the historic section have the elegance of a lost era.

Clean, cozy, comfy bed and a much needed blast of luxury after I arrived rather stressed out.

I think this hotel lives up to its "affordable luxury " claim and I would stay here again.

The rooms are clean, spacious and luxurious, beds very comfy.

Handerly is in an interesting location in SF,  with high-end shopping in one direction and community clinics in the other.

Historic hotel in Union Square close to many high-end shops, Macy’s, Cheesecake Factory and other San Francisco musts; close to Market St. Near Cable Car stop Powell/Hyde that goes to the Fisherman Wharf area; Hotel itself has a more antiquated portion that smells a bit musty-probably the carpeting; friendly staff, room was smallish

Not luxury, nor should it be for the great value.

The hotel is in Union Square amidst the high end luxury stores you have several homeless folks as well as junkies and drunks.

You won't notice this until you're in the shower and it's too late to call them
- Your room will be incredibly noisy, with loud noises starting and stopping at random intervals

I would NOT recommend this hotel and wish we had stayed elsewhere.

Our suite was on the front of the hotel bit noisy at night .

You could hear the trolleys and some street noise

I didn't take this in until the vibration and noise kicked in.

but we didn’t sleep well the whole time due to house keeping waking us up early, the rooms above having extremely creaky floor boards and hearing all the noise from the TV, people walking in the room above and the rooms next to us slamming doors.

Our only grumble was that our bedroom backed onto a tunnel where the buildings met and there was some echo noise transfer from the lower bedrooms,  especially on the Saturday night where it seemed someone was having a party!

The room door has a very loud closing mechanism so we did get woken by other guests shutting their doors and it also sounded like we were close to a service lift as this started whirring in to action around 8am.

Last night, our neighbors were smoking and noisy,

Due to being in the centre it was a little noisy at times

Towards the end of our 4-night stay, the people next door to us were very noisy and smoking marijuana and slamming doors.

We had a pool side room which I'm thankful for because I think one facing the street could get rather noisy.

Excellent service, compact room with comfy bed, small bathroom, a lot of noise from the street - they should double glaze the windows to reduce the noise.

A quiet stroll through Union Square in the early or late hours of any day when the crowds have gone, is a worthwhile visit to America's past at a time when it was very exciting to be alive and the air was full of possibilities for a young country.

In one room earplugs were left for guests to deal with the noise.

The noise from the street was not enough to disrupt sleep.

The room was quiet and you could hear none of the outside noise or hustle and bustle of the city streets.

It is close to the cable cars, China Town and easy to get to other interesting parts of San Francisco such as the cable car museum.

The Handlery is a lovely place to stay in San Francisco!

Stayed here for a week on our first visit to San Francisco as the area was recommended as a great hub for sightseeing.

The hotel location is only half block from Union Square, so it is very convenient to visit San Francisco.

I will certainly stay there again whenever I am in San Francisco.

The hotel is in a fantastic location right in the centre of San Francisco with great restaurants, cafes right nearby.

What a little gem, ideally situated for a visit to San Francisco, very clean and lovely staff.

The location is fantastic  I'd recommend a stay at the Handlery, particularly if you like a heated outdoor pool as they are hard to find in San Francisco I understand.

You are so close to everything you will need while visiting San Francisco.

Our favourite SF attractions (kids 11 and 14): biking the GG bridge to Sausalito, Musee Macanique on Fishermans Wharf, Muir Woods, Bakers Beach, Farmers Market Saturdays at Ferry Building and “Dear San Francisco” show at ClubFugazi is a must do just beautiful!

We loved this 1920s hotel in the heart of San Francisco.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to anyone looking for a great hotel in San Francisco!

Decent pool if you fancied a dip (although we didn't find san Francisco that warm so the kids weren't in there long)  Would highly recommend this hotel for families as it does exactly what you would expect it to.

This far exceeded what we were expecting, and it kickstarted the most amazing experience in San Francisco.

I would recommend this hotel to everyone visiting San Francisco.

It was a good start to traveling to San Francisco!

They also held our luggage on the day of checkout in a secure location to let us explore San Francisco more!

My wife and I stayed  at the Handerly for a six day trip to move our daughter out of the University of San Francisco dorms and this was an excellent base for the process.

Cons- The corridors are a bit dark and run down, carpet worn in places and smelled musty around certain places.

First impressions where beautiful hotel, after 22 hours of traveling we get to the room and it smelt like cats, had to change new room was overly powering of cheap bleach, 
Staff where very nice and the reason for 1 star i still havent after 2 weeks got my $150 deposit back so be careful with this hotel

Rude staff with bad attitudes towards us and old rooms that smell with showers that are awful.

The smell didn't disappear even after three days in the room.

Cons: room I  had was a bit older, had a slight sewer smell to it, not so much of a problem though (there are two wings older and newer), The room is generally clean,
