We had dinner in the dining room and while the salad starter was good the main course was inedible.

We unusually also had a delicious pudding of  caramalised banana and ice cream.

Very European feel, almost like a bed and breakfast.

We had breakfast in the dining room which allowed you step back in time with a lovely breakfast to start the day.

At its restaurant, "Imperatriz Leopoldina", we loved Belgian Chef Bertand Materne's exquisite and delicious menu, as well as the delicately painted walls, with nature and animal scenes, by French artist Dominique Jardy.

but has all the ingredients that make every penny spent worth it.

The day-to-day staff is great, breakfast is great, the grounds look nice and the hotel building itself is beautiful.

Plus: warm swimming pool, caipirinha in the entrance, dinner quality, room, breakfast menu, service in the whole.

This magnificent neoclassic manor was built in 1875, by a wealth coffee merchant, and after totally restored and renovated, the former "Solar D. Afonso" (named after a deceased Imperial prince) was converted into a beautiful and charming hotel: "Solar do Império"!

My second point for improvement would be the lighting in the restaurant in the evening, which is much too bright and does nothing to create the right atmosphere.

You can see that they care about the details, chocolate in the bed to receive you,  piano playing in the nigh, everthing to create a good environment, more interesting when going with your girlfriend/ boyfriend.

The evening meal was somewhat forgettable and the restaurant lacked atmosphere, perhaps just because the lighting was very bright.

For a couple of days we felt like nobles in this authentic old colonial styled residence.

I spent week there and in fact, I don’t like that hotel… Bars in windows, security everywhere (however very nice guys!)

The main structure is really amazing, charmingly restored and original.

Each room is spacious, wonderfully decorated with a king sized bed.

Like another reviewer said, all the charm of an older home goes away with the lack of soundproof - we can hear our next door neighbors too.

The towels had rust stains on them, the door looked like it had never been cleaned (lots of print stains around the lock/handle), and the carpet had mystery stains.

If that wasn’t enough, the rooms are not well cleaned.

This hotel needs a good cleaning, a paint job and possibly a new manager.

Great location to visit sites of Petropolis, a very safe city.

Some apartments are located in the main building (aged 140 years) and others (like ours, Visconde de Rio Branco) in a mansion also within the same area.

Come for the warm staff who try very hard, good food and amazing position.

This is a beautiful hotel set in a great location in Petropolis which I always wanted to try so I spent one night to see what it was all about.

Due to its privileged location, from "Solar do Império" we could easily walk all over the historical city center and its many attractions.

This is exactly where Solar do Império is located and pretty much all you need to visit, as the rest of the city is best avoided.

Stayed at Solar for five nights recently and enjoyed every aspect of my stay: the location is wonderful, within walking distance of all Petropolis' downtown tourist sites; the facility is wonderful, I especially enjoyed the 24-hour pool and sauna facillities; and the service is wonderful,

It is in an excellent location in the beautiful heart of the old town and near most of the key attractions.

I really wanted to love this hotel, the building is beautiful, the garden very stately, the location is fantastic,

Location is excellent, you can park your car when you arrive and forget it, all attractions can be reached within 20 minutes walking.

Even with all these highest quality attributes, the most valuable to me, as a tourist, was the prime location of the palace.

First of all, it is located in one of the most beautiful streets of the town.

Solar do Império is an excellent hotel located in the Imperial City of Petropolis near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

It`s simply the best hotel in Petropolis.Great location,nice building,wonderful to stay!

Our room was on the adjacent house (room 41) and oh boy it is noisy at night.

During the night there's virtually no traffic.

It is a modestly grand and fairly small old hotel which has modernized with minimal disturbance to its history.

The noise of the cars, the trucks, the busses, the motorcycles - like you're sleeping on the sidewalk of an highway.

Minus: loud traffic noises from the road surrounding the entire properties ruin our sleeping at 6 am.

If you are lucky to have kids running around in the apartment above yours (as I had) there was no earplugs that will help you to get some sleep.

The ground floor rooms are damp and noisy and should be avoided if possible.

And the front rooms can be noisy at weekends.

Also my room on the ground floor was quite noisy.

Picadinho a Dom Pedro, canja do imperador, torta do imperador( cheesecake with berries), Nice place to have a special meal!

It was advertised as Chicken breast on a rosti with sage sauce and Brie cheese.

Both hotel and restaurant teams were lovely and helpful.

The lunch we had was better food than any we had in Rio.

Highly recommend the restaurant at which we enjoyed a fantastic dinner.

The staff were great and the restaurant in the hotel was very good.

I have once again had the oportunity to visit the Leopoldina restaurant and have noticed to my satisfaction that the standard of the service in special has still the same excellent level as during my last visit.

A charming 1872 construction, the hotel features a nice garden, high ceilings and beautiful balconies in some rooms.

Despite he fact of being a secular place very well conserved, the room has a big comfortable bed, excellent bathroom and good wifi signal (not sure why would you need it in a city like Petropolis

The staff were friendly and the room spacious.

The staff went over the top when they quickly couriered our lost passport (left in the room closet) very quickly from Petropolis to Rio when we discovered it was missing.

The hotel also offers a full spectrum of dish channels (Sky), a DVD player and about 150 movies that you can pick up in the front desk and watch in your room.

Nice big rooms and beds - really nice garden and outdoor area.

I requested a room on the second floor and was given a very nice room next to the courtyard.

The rugs are filthy, the potty is simply disgusting- picture below.

However, when you look closely, you see the issues - for example, the indoor pool area is disgusting; not sure when that water was last cleaned.

Avoid the basement rooms with carpet floor, smells humidity.

All staff were extremely friendly and accommodating.

The hotel staff is really well trained, always warm atentive and pro active is always around when you need them.

It's very well maintained and thr staff if extremely hospitable.

All the staff, from the reception to the waiter to the porter and gatekeeper were dressed in well-worn baggy pants and old sweaters.

The staff was incredible and made our stay there even better.

We stayed five days with two kids(10 and 7).Lovely hotel, comfortable and outstanding staff.

The owners are always around making sure that everything goes well and that the guests needs are being met.

Other walks will take you to the Bohemia beer museum and cafe with the Crystal Palace nearby, and to the interesting and quirky hill-side home of Santos Dumont, Brazil's pioneer flyer contemporary with the Wright brothers.

This is the place to stay in Petropolis:
you can walk to all the tourist places and see on your way the old mansions.

It's one of the few places left in Rio where you can walk around carefree at night.

We had two single rooms, one facing the street with a cute balcony, at R$450 each, with breakfast.

Stayed here recently on a business trip, found the hotel really nice with friendly helpful staff, the rooms were spotless and air conditioned as it would've been too hot without it, breakfast was a bit limited

The hotel has it's own restaurant, where it serves it's breakfast buffet, and lunch and dinner, as well.

I could stay for a weekend at this excelent hotel with a  careful service, breakfast with many tasty choices.

Breakfast selection was good, toast, fruit, cereals and eggs whichever way you would like.

Both rooms identical….spacious, clean, quality linens, VERY comfy bed, effective A/C unit (saving grace since it was 34C outside being summertime).

The rooms appear to have been recently refurbished in a similar to may hotels in Brazil - false wood floors, clean modern interior.

The property is spotless having been recently renovated.

The room including bathroom was clean, modern and of a good size.

There were a couple of minor annoyances, which would not be found in most of the rooms, like the mis-aligned toilet seat and the partially shredded blackout curtain (see attached photos).

For us (as tourists) the location of this hotel was very good, opposite the royal palace, and within walking distance to most other tourist attractions and to various restaurants.

Things that are easily fixed if management inspected the rooms, and did not expect the cleaning help to report these types of problems.

The receptionists were very nice and gave us all the information we needed before we came up to the room which was great!

The lobby is lovely, and the rooms are practically brand new.

This is a budget hotel in the very middle of a busy high street, with a lovely reception area,

and the staff was really nice (giving advice on local restaurants etc. ).

The staff is extremely nice and helpful, and the manager Bianca was wonderful.

I would also recommend Casa D'Angelo just across the street from the hotel for a great place to get a drink and people watch.

Very convenient for visiting the Imperial Palace Museum, which is right across the street.

but give the hotel 5* and would certainly stay again if ever in the lovely town that is Petropolis.

Petropolis is a very nice little town up in the mountains northeast of Rio de Janeiro for those who don't know it.

There was valet-parking, which was needed in a busy town like Petropolis, and a gym.

The food is so fresh and delicious always and the staff and the owner are super nice and accommodating.

We loved the salads and the pate, and the desserts were delicious.

We chose for the complete pension ( breakfast, lunch and dinner inclueded) and I believe this is the best option.

3- Excellent food: breakfast was a highlight with a huge buffet and plenty of fresh fruits and freshly baked bread.

The organic kitchen garden produces fresh and delicious food that is marvelous cooked by a superb chef that is trained in France.

There is a fixed price menu with three choices of entrees.

I’ve included a couple of menu scans and these show the format as it has always been and always will be.

This hotel is truly amazing and the food outstanding.

The food is great, as well as the service.

Once again a very pleasant stay with good food - fondue - and friendly staff.

Stayed for three nights and enjoyed hiking, swimming, sauna, steam, games, food, wine, bar, and birds around the well manicured property.

After several argumentation, they decided to offer an early check-in and free lunch, which I accepted
