In mid 19th century, long before air-conditioning, rainy Petrópolis was once where the Brazilian imperial family hid from hideous Rio de Janeiro summers, and where its descendants can be found, living off of unjustifiable taxes the city's inhabitants have to pay to this day to their founding fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, dogs and parrots.

The heating unit is quite noisy and the control unit is hidden away in a drawer for some reason.

It only should have more air circulation.

Excellent location, excellent food, in a sophisticated place with very beautiful decoration, featuring watercolors pictures of animals of the Brazilian flora.

we didn't expect such a beautiful architecture .

This magnificent neoclassic manor was built in 1875, by a wealth coffee merchant, and after totally restored and renovated, the former "Solar D. Afonso" (named after a deceased Imperial prince) was converted into a beautiful and charming hotel: "Solar do Império"!

My second point for improvement would be the lighting in the restaurant in the evening, which is much too bright and does nothing to create the right atmosphere.

You can see that they care about the details, chocolate in the bed to receive you,  piano playing in the nigh, everthing to create a good environment, more interesting when going with your girlfriend/ boyfriend.

The evening meal was somewhat forgettable and the restaurant lacked atmosphere, perhaps just because the lighting was very bright.

For a couple of days we felt like nobles in this authentic old colonial styled residence.

In the bright side, the hotel staff is very kind, helpful and professional, breakfast is simple

The main structure is really amazing, charmingly restored and original.

With a bit more of investment, care and planning, this hotel has the potential to be an hotel of excellence.

This is a beautiful hotel set in a great location in Petropolis which I always wanted to try so I spent one night to see what it was all about.

Lovely hotel - once occupied by a coffee merchant and his family this place takes you back in time.

If you are going to the "Imperial City" of Petrópolis, "Solar do Império" may be a perfect hotel choice!

A charming 1872 construction, the hotel features a nice garden, high ceilings and beautiful balconies in some rooms.

By the time we left after two nights, we felt much better about this hotel than after the first two hours.

The hotel staff is really well trained, always warm atentive and pro active is always around when you need them.

Despite this I found the hotel charming and enjoyable.

The day-to-day staff is great, breakfast is great, the grounds look nice and the hotel building itself is beautiful.

The staff were great and the restaurant in the hotel was very good.

I booked the hotel for three nights, in general it´s a nice hotel.

Now most are institutions; three hotels, a bank, a museum, the city hall and are well maintained.

The hotel is quite secure with the staff checking every car and visitor who enter the fenced grounds.

It's a beautiful classic hotel that is missing many modern  basic conveniences including WiFi, dependable pluming and a very outdated  health club that which has two residential tried mills.

Picadinho a Dom Pedro, canja do imperador, torta do imperador( cheesecake with berries), Nice place to have a special meal!

It was advertised as Chicken breast on a rosti with sage sauce and Brie cheese.

The lunch we had was better food than any we had in Rio.

Highly recommend the restaurant at which we enjoyed a fantastic dinner.

At its restaurant, "Imperatriz Leopoldina", we loved Belgian Chef Bertand Materne's exquisite and delicious menu, as well as the delicately painted walls, with nature and animal scenes, by French artist Dominique Jardy.

Plus: warm swimming pool, caipirinha in the entrance, dinner quality, room, breakfast menu, service in the whole.

I have once again had the oportunity to visit the Leopoldina restaurant and have noticed to my satisfaction that the standard of the service in special has still the same excellent level as during my last visit.

The food is excellent and nicely presented.

If you are looking for somewhere nice to eat bordeaux restaurant knocks this one flat.

but would be enhanced by lower lighting and candles on the tables.

It is next door to a busy street with city buses going through all night long and, to make matters worse, it has a taxi stop right under our window where the drivers start speaking loud at 6am.

No taxis needed unlike some of the cheaper accommodation  options.

A new road has been built which is one way down the mountain.

The restaurant area had beautiful mural paintings on the wall as well as windows with beautiful views of the surrounding forested hills.

And Petropolis, the city in which this hotel sits, is a mountain paradise.

it doesn’t fit to my view of Kings City.

After waiting almost an hour and making 3 phone calls to request them we gave up and headed to the reception ourselves.

We were asked - through our guide, in Portuguese - to wait ten minutes as the room wasn't ready yet.

Due to its privileged location, from "Solar do Império" we could easily walk all over the historical city center and its many attractions.

- and a few minutes' walk from the Palacio Imperial which is the must-see attraction.

Location is excellent, you can park your car when you arrive and forget it, all attractions can be reached within 20 minutes walking.

Other walks will take you to the Bohemia beer museum and cafe with the Crystal Palace nearby, and to the interesting and quirky hill-side home of Santos Dumont, Brazil's pioneer flyer contemporary with the Wright brothers.

This is the place to stay in Petropolis:
you can walk to all the tourist places and see on your way the old mansions.

It's one of the few places left in Rio where you can walk around carefree at night.

Located in the historical center, you can walk to Imperial Museum, Casa de Santos Dumont, flower watch and Crystal Palace.

but our room was enormous with working wifi and Sky TV, good water pressure and a limited but good quality breakfast in the price.

However, when you look closely, you see the issues - for example, the indoor pool area is disgusting; not sure when that water was last cleaned.

According to staff, the hotel was closed for many years, until it was renovated, starting in 2005 and re-opened in 2011.

Although we showed up on  Monday when attractions are closed - so if you are planning to visit avoid Mondays.

It was a bit cold, it being winter in Brazil,

Breakfast with in the rate, lovely spread with many different options both cold (cereals, fruit and yougurts, cakes etc) and hot (bacon eggs etc) coffee or tea and a range of juices.

but give the hotel 5* and would certainly stay again if ever in the lovely town that is Petropolis.

but it is sufficient if you want to be in the centre of the town, a classic, rather old-fashioned hotel.

The hotel is environmentally-friendly and has received massive investment for that purpose.

Would definitely use this hotel again as its in a good central location with bars and restaurants all within walking distance.

The food is well prepared and reasonably priced (this is a hotel restaurant, of course).

I flew into Rio and organized transportation with the hotel via a lovely driver for about $75 USD each way.

I could stay for a weekend at this excelent hotel with a  careful service, breakfast with many tasty choices.

For us (as tourists) the location of this hotel was very good, opposite the royal palace, and within walking distance to most other tourist attractions and to various restaurants.

The restaurant is very peaceful, has a very nice menu and reasonable prices.

A room with two armchairs, one table with chairs, minibar with very good prices, big bed and a great view from the balcony.

It's a beautifully renovated historic building at a reasonable price.

Being quite tired one night I ordered room service which was reasonably priced and delivered promptly

Make sure that you book online on the hotel website or through booking.com, as the rate will be much lower!

The hotel provided valet parking for a nominal cost - it was efficient.

The rooms in the back can be a bit noisy: there are a bunch of noisy dogs and some air compressors.

Poor noise insulation means you hear the next room television or noisy children, people talking in the corridor, and street noise if at the front.

Once you walk outside hotel the street is very busy and noisy .

I was able to dine in the hotel one evening and found the food to be good, not great,

but there is enough variety that you can choose to eat something different every day.

Good breakfast with a wide selection of food, very kind attendants, they upgraded us at check-in time.

and the staff was really nice (giving advice on local restaurants etc. ).

The restaurant is beautiful and the breakfast has many option to choose from, including delicious home made cakes: the banana strudel is particularly tasty.

Very Clean hotel and central for Petropolis and only an 1 1/2 hours from Rio, Breakfast and staff are brilliant, the Taxi's reasonable, a fair amount of restaurants close by and public bars.

They merged the two single beds to make a standard double bed, which was not confortable and the quality of the bed sheet were was really poor, I had better sleeping experience for sure!

If you need to stay there, get the front rooms with the nicer view.

Petropolis is a very nice little town up in the mountains northeast of Rio de Janeiro for those who don't know it.

The driver was perfect and couldn't have been more cautious and conscientious going up and down the steep mountain passes.

Stayed in Luxury room facing square, nice view, clean room, modest furnishings.

Our room was 503, up in the left corner when looking at the hotel form outside, with the stunning mountains of the area as a background to the main church and the square in front of the hotel.

And drinks were MUCH too expensive, in my opinion -- a glass of wine was R$50, a caipirinha R$45, etc.

And yes to the other poster, a couple of the locks on the sliding glass windows in the hotel restaurant are broken.

This is one of the most beautiful hotel properties I've ever seen, with stunning views, well-maintained grounds and pool, and lovely nature walks.

We have now stayed here several times and everything about this hotel is what you would expect and the location is breathtaking.

This hotel is truly amazing and the food outstanding.

The hotel is located on a farm so you are surrounded by nature.

The property has several trails that you can explore, a lake on which you can go boating, massage-saunas and horses to go riding with.

After breakfast we asked to the guy of the reception what staff we could do in the hotel; he said that you could go fishing, and going with the boat ( all gratis) and also if you wanted you could play soccer and tennis over there.

Stayed for three nights and enjoyed hiking, swimming, sauna, steam, games, food, wine, bar, and birds around the well manicured property.

Despite being part of the Charming Chain of Hotels, in fact it lacks any charm.

The property is gorgeous and meticulously cared for.

The service was very attentive and the Hotel Manager did everything he could to help us make our training programme successful - including building a wonderful bonfire to watch the stars by.

This is an enormous property yet every little bit it is beautifully spotlessly kept.

4- Warm spirit: a lot of the guests knew each other from previous stays at the hotel.

The hotel owners are personally engaged in mainstreaming sustainability in the hotel sector and are inspiring people.

I’m writing another review of hotel Rosa dos Ventos mainly to counter the negative rubbish posted by someone else.

The best part of the room was the veranda overlooking the mountains with trellised plants creating privacy and separation from others -- lovely!

Apart from the nice view, there isn’t much to do.

Some of the most beautiful views of the various mountain ranges can be seen from many locations throughout the property.

There are lots of great things to do around the place, or you can just sit in perfect peace and enjoy the sensational views (or stars at night).

Our room had a large terrace with a fantastic view.

Very good to spend days at this hotel with children, they will have a lot of fun and there is also entertainment and fun for adults.

Hotel Le Village is very well kept and staff is friendly and helpful.

The hotel is very nice and less than 2 hours drive from Rio .

The hotel has great service, 3 swimming-pools, and attractions like a beautiful farm and a park with lots of rides for all ages.

The hotel has a lot of activities, mainly for the kids, and the services are excellent.

The Swiss Farm hotel is really nice offering horseback riding and other animals.

The hotel has many kids activities, playgrounds.

Hotel Le Canton is a swiss montain resort located 2 hours by car from Rio where in can find good climate, confortable room, excellent food and many adventures for adults and children.

There is also a small amusement park, primarily for kids, on the property.

The hotel had made a great investment in new facilities, from additional rooms, more seats in the restaurant, new atractions on the park (the snow slide).

The hotel now has a big park for children near the hotel,

And staff is also so friendly nature in this hotel.

The hotel is huge, lots of entertainment for the kids, staff always readynto help.

Only two opportunities for improvement: (i) price of the SPA and the theme park are very high for what they actually offer; and (ii) consider offering all inclusive packages.

It has a baby park inside the castle (free) and some kind of farm animals (also free to see).

however they were large and the bathroom has a private steam room for us .

I recommend the L’Occitane Spa if you are in to massage and relaxation (though you will have to prepare your pocket for that).

This hotel is famous in brazil because of their facility and services like the heated pool, massage rooms, fitness center, sauna and steam room, bar with live music, Gym Ice Skating and the Parc Magique.

Waiters don’t even use a dissintectant to clean the tables just a piece of cloth to wipe the left over crumbs to the floor or to the chair surrounding them.

The restaurant is very little to serve the quests, so there is a lot of moments that you have to stay there waiting for a table and the waiters aren t very helpful.

There is no hot water to take shower and in the evening the temperature is 16 degrees so without hot water it is not possible to take a shower neither for us nor for our daughter.

You need to pass the cold water to reach heated area, so is almost unusable, as the place has low temperatures.

but general view is amazing with old buildings like a Switzerland Village.

If you are looking for a quick trip to the mountains at Rio de Janeiro outskirts and you have young kids this is definitely the place to go.

The climate and the mountain views in Teresopolis are just fantastic.

Overall, for me the drive to the city, through some mountains, was the highlight of the trip.

Upon arrival we were put in a room where there was no water to flush the toilet.
