Excellent location, excellent food, in a sophisticated place with very beautiful decoration, featuring watercolors pictures of animals of the Brazilian flora.

This magnificent neoclassic manor was built in 1875, by a wealth coffee merchant, and after totally restored and renovated, the former "Solar D. Afonso" (named after a deceased Imperial prince) was converted into a beautiful and charming hotel: "Solar do Império"!

My second point for improvement would be the lighting in the restaurant in the evening, which is much too bright and does nothing to create the right atmosphere.

You can see that they care about the details, chocolate in the bed to receive you,  piano playing in the nigh, everthing to create a good environment, more interesting when going with your girlfriend/ boyfriend.

The evening meal was somewhat forgettable and the restaurant lacked atmosphere, perhaps just because the lighting was very bright.

For a couple of days we felt like nobles in this authentic old colonial styled residence.

I spent week there and in fact, I don’t like that hotel… Bars in windows, security everywhere (however very nice guys!)

The main structure is really amazing, charmingly restored and original.

Each room is spacious, wonderfully decorated with a king sized bed.

Like another reviewer said, all the charm of an older home goes away with the lack of soundproof - we can hear our next door neighbors too.

The towels had rust stains on them, the door looked like it had never been cleaned (lots of print stains around the lock/handle), and the carpet had mystery stains.

With a bit more of investment, care and planning, this hotel has the potential to be an hotel of excellence.

This is a beautiful hotel set in a great location in Petropolis which I always wanted to try so I spent one night to see what it was all about.

Lovely hotel - once occupied by a coffee merchant and his family this place takes you back in time.

If you are going to the "Imperial City" of Petrópolis, "Solar do Império" may be a perfect hotel choice!

A charming 1872 construction, the hotel features a nice garden, high ceilings and beautiful balconies in some rooms.

By the time we left after two nights, we felt much better about this hotel than after the first two hours.

The hotel staff is really well trained, always warm atentive and pro active is always around when you need them.

Despite this I found the hotel charming and enjoyable.

The day-to-day staff is great, breakfast is great, the grounds look nice and the hotel building itself is beautiful.

I booked the hotel for three nights, in general it´s a nice hotel.

Now most are institutions; three hotels, a bank, a museum, the city hall and are well maintained.

The hotel is quite secure with the staff checking every car and visitor who enter the fenced grounds.

It's a beautiful classic hotel that is missing many modern  basic conveniences including WiFi, dependable pluming and a very outdated  health club that which has two residential tried mills.

If that wasn’t enough, the rooms are not well cleaned.

This hotel needs a good cleaning, a paint job and possibly a new manager.

Our room was on the adjacent house (room 41) and oh boy it is noisy at night.

During the night there's virtually no traffic.

It is a modestly grand and fairly small old hotel which has modernized with minimal disturbance to its history.

The noise of the cars, the trucks, the busses, the motorcycles - like you're sleeping on the sidewalk of an highway.

Minus: loud traffic noises from the road surrounding the entire properties ruin our sleeping at 6 am.

If you are lucky to have kids running around in the apartment above yours (as I had) there was no earplugs that will help you to get some sleep.

The ground floor rooms are damp and noisy and should be avoided if possible.

And the front rooms can be noisy at weekends.

Also my room on the ground floor was quite noisy.

Picadinho a Dom Pedro, canja do imperador, torta do imperador( cheesecake with berries), Nice place to have a special meal!

It was advertised as Chicken breast on a rosti with sage sauce and Brie cheese.

The lunch we had was better food than any we had in Rio.

Highly recommend the restaurant at which we enjoyed a fantastic dinner.

At its restaurant, "Imperatriz Leopoldina", we loved Belgian Chef Bertand Materne's exquisite and delicious menu, as well as the delicately painted walls, with nature and animal scenes, by French artist Dominique Jardy.

Plus: warm swimming pool, caipirinha in the entrance, dinner quality, room, breakfast menu, service in the whole.

I have once again had the oportunity to visit the Leopoldina restaurant and have noticed to my satisfaction that the standard of the service in special has still the same excellent level as during my last visit.

The food is excellent and nicely presented.

If you are looking for somewhere nice to eat bordeaux restaurant knocks this one flat.

The rugs are filthy, the potty is simply disgusting- picture below.

However, when you look closely, you see the issues - for example, the indoor pool area is disgusting; not sure when that water was last cleaned.

Avoid the basement rooms with carpet floor, smells humidity.

A new road has been built which is one way down the mountain.

The restaurant area had beautiful mural paintings on the wall as well as windows with beautiful views of the surrounding forested hills.

And Petropolis, the city in which this hotel sits, is a mountain paradise.

it doesn’t fit to my view of Kings City.

Due to its privileged location, from "Solar do Império" we could easily walk all over the historical city center and its many attractions.

- and a few minutes' walk from the Palacio Imperial which is the must-see attraction.

Location is excellent, you can park your car when you arrive and forget it, all attractions can be reached within 20 minutes walking.

Other walks will take you to the Bohemia beer museum and cafe with the Crystal Palace nearby, and to the interesting and quirky hill-side home of Santos Dumont, Brazil's pioneer flyer contemporary with the Wright brothers.

This is the place to stay in Petropolis:
you can walk to all the tourist places and see on your way the old mansions.

It's one of the few places left in Rio where you can walk around carefree at night.

Located in the historical center, you can walk to Imperial Museum, Casa de Santos Dumont, flower watch and Crystal Palace.

The Hotel is situated in the heart of Petropolis' historic centre so can walk everywhere within the historic town.

but it is sufficient if you want to be in the centre of the town, a classic, rather old-fashioned hotel.

It's a beautifully renovated historic building at a reasonable price.

Wifi is free throughout the hotel and all the main historical sites are within easy walking distance.

It is the perfect place to start your exploration of the historic town!

It is centrally located and walking distance to petropolis main historic tourist attractions.

but give the hotel 5* and would certainly stay again if ever in the lovely town that is Petropolis.

The hotel is environmentally-friendly and has received massive investment for that purpose.

Would definitely use this hotel again as its in a good central location with bars and restaurants all within walking distance.

The food is well prepared and reasonably priced (this is a hotel restaurant, of course).

I flew into Rio and organized transportation with the hotel via a lovely driver for about $75 USD each way.

I could stay for a weekend at this excelent hotel with a  careful service, breakfast with many tasty choices.

Really liked where this hotel was situated, walking distance to anything you want to see in city center.

The property is spotless having been recently renovated.

The hotel is recently refurbished (2014), nice rooms and bathrooms, Best breakfast ever!

There were a couple of minor annoyances, which would not be found in most of the rooms, like the mis-aligned toilet seat and the partially shredded blackout curtain (see attached photos).

Before and after pictures make fascinating viewing on the wall of the breakfast room.

but the photos are quite misleading from the front ( they have sold half of the street frontage to shop units) and finding it on a busy Friday night was a nightmare.

Things that are easily fixed if management inspected the rooms, and did not expect the cleaning help to report these types of problems.

Unfortunately, we have found it a bit pricy considering the overall quality.

You should not expect 5 star luxury as back home in Europe (here a shower only, no bathtub),

but you'll need to ask, don't expect them to offer. Why?

We had two single rooms, one facing the street with a cute balcony, at R$450 each, with breakfast.

I would also recommend Casa D'Angelo just across the street from the hotel for a great place to get a drink and people watch.

Very convenient for visiting the Imperial Palace Museum, which is right across the street.

The location of the Grande Hotel is just perfect - you just have to cross the street and you'll be in front of the Imperial Museum.

This is a budget hotel in the very middle of a busy high street, with a lovely reception area,

Casual local pub across the street, and walking distance to most attractions.

It is located right in the heart of this bustling town.

Petropolis is a very nice little town up in the mountains northeast of Rio de Janeiro for those who don't know it.

There was valet-parking, which was needed in a busy town like Petropolis, and a gym.

I would highly recommend a visit to this quaint town and definitely recommend a stay at this hotel.

There is the old royal palace and many other old houses etc to see in and around town.

If you need to stay there, get the front rooms with the nicer view.

The driver was perfect and couldn't have been more cautious and conscientious going up and down the steep mountain passes.

Stayed in Luxury room facing square, nice view, clean room, modest furnishings.

Our room was 503, up in the left corner when looking at the hotel form outside, with the stunning mountains of the area as a background to the main church and the square in front of the hotel.

Cooler climate here i the mountains - and cleaner air , -  Clean and comfortable rooms -

We had never visited the mountain regions of Brazil.

This is one of the most beautiful hotel properties I've ever seen, with stunning views, well-maintained grounds and pool, and lovely nature walks.

We have now stayed here several times and everything about this hotel is what you would expect and the location is breathtaking.

This hotel is truly amazing and the food outstanding.

The hotel is located on a farm so you are surrounded by nature.

The property has several trails that you can explore, a lake on which you can go boating, massage-saunas and horses to go riding with.

After breakfast we asked to the guy of the reception what staff we could do in the hotel; he said that you could go fishing, and going with the boat ( all gratis) and also if you wanted you could play soccer and tennis over there.

Stayed for three nights and enjoyed hiking, swimming, sauna, steam, games, food, wine, bar, and birds around the well manicured property.

Despite being part of the Charming Chain of Hotels, in fact it lacks any charm.

The property is gorgeous and meticulously cared for.

The service was very attentive and the Hotel Manager did everything he could to help us make our training programme successful - including building a wonderful bonfire to watch the stars by.

This is an enormous property yet every little bit it is beautifully spotlessly kept.

4- Warm spirit: a lot of the guests knew each other from previous stays at the hotel.

The hotel owners are personally engaged in mainstreaming sustainability in the hotel sector and are inspiring people.

The best part of the room was the veranda overlooking the mountains with trellised plants creating privacy and separation from others -- lovely!

Apart from the nice view, there isn’t much to do.

Some of the most beautiful views of the various mountain ranges can be seen from many locations throughout the property.

There are lots of great things to do around the place, or you can just sit in perfect peace and enjoy the sensational views (or stars at night).

Our room had a large terrace with a fantastic view.

It is a big place to promote activities with big group.

The hotel is so comfy and has so many activities going on all the time that is easy to forget to rest.

The team who entertains the kids is great and always available.

Very good to spend days at this hotel with children, they will have a lot of fun and there is also entertainment and fun for adults.

Hotel Le Canton is a swiss montain resort located 2 hours by car from Rio where in can find good climate, confortable room, excellent food and many adventures for adults and children.

Only two opportunities for improvement: (i) price of the SPA and the theme park are very high for what they actually offer; and (ii) consider offering all inclusive packages.

Our package was the all inclusive and the food was good (not 5 star )

but everything is charged out of the hotel rate.

The magic park is extra charge and is closed on wednesdays and so is the farm.

A little pricy if you consider that most of the activities are charged.

The price is very high, so they didn´t need to charge more for the activities.

There was a lack of a better night program for guests' entertainment.

but I consider myself a tolerant guest when I am on vacation and normally I don’t like to trash fellow hoteliers for issues I encounter while staying in the hotels.

On top of that, brazilian guests don't care about the others.

For the rate charged, this hotel should have better trained staff or at least staff that are gentle with their guest.

The restaurant is very little to serve the quests, so there is a lot of moments that you have to stay there waiting for a table and the waiters aren t very helpful.

Hotel Le Village is very well kept and staff is friendly and helpful.

Hotel with excellent location, attentive staff, the pleasant mountain climate, the menu was excellent, it would be better if non-alcoholic drinks were served during meals without extra charge.

The hotel is very nice and less than 2 hours drive from Rio .

The hotel has great service, 3 swimming-pools, and attractions like a beautiful farm and a park with lots of rides for all ages.

The Swiss Farm hotel is really nice offering horseback riding and other animals.

There is also a small amusement park, primarily for kids, on the property.

The hotel had made a great investment in new facilities, from additional rooms, more seats in the restaurant, new atractions on the park (the snow slide).

And staff is also so friendly nature in this hotel.

The hotel is huge, lots of entertainment for the kids, staff always readynto help.

Restaurants and entertaiments very expensive , once you are not in Disneyworld

Pretty much all the activities for the kids are extra and not cheap.

The problem is that there isn t much more apart these activities that you have to pay.

It s not a cheap hotel to stay and if you want the horse, the bycicle, the bowling, the zip line, th arvorism, others sports, and even the use of the sauna and the closed swimming pool, you have to pay a part.

but general view is amazing with old buildings like a Switzerland Village.

If you are looking for a quick trip to the mountains at Rio de Janeiro outskirts and you have young kids this is definitely the place to go.

The climate and the mountain views in Teresopolis are just fantastic.

Overall, for me the drive to the city, through some mountains, was the highlight of the trip.
