Since it was taken over by the ANEW group, everything was simplified and very friendly and efficient.

The hotel is lovely, the staff are very friendly and helpful, the food is delicious and what's more, it is in Hilton, a beautiful little town, and even better, close to Karkloof where you can find some amazing hiking, trial runs and mountain biking.

We stopped over at this hotel on our way to Durban in order to visit the Nelson Mandela Capture site.

Wonderful deaf barista with huge smile on duty, a credit to the hotel and so good that they gave her this opportunity with suitable signage on how to order your coffee.

We then ordered the all day breakfast which looked very nice ,

The food was scrumptious, i ordered room service and the food arrived at my door in no time, the breakfasts are well set up and run efficiently with the buffet providing a good hearty breakfast to get the day started.

We have ordered room service which was nice and quick.

Had any patron ever previously ordered something from the menu, we wondered?

I have stayed at this hotel a number of times and often order the Curry of the Day for dinner.

The food was what stood out the most, we ordered the oxtail dish for dinner and it  was amazing, the breakfast buffet was great also!!!

but this was not a big issue for me as they were under construction

Absulute disaster..from check in to staying at this place was crap..You pay 4 star rates and get below one star service..Noisy and below mediorce staff and environment.The staff make so much of noise 24 hours i wish you luck with sleeping..the hot water is not hot is warm..the toilet and bathroom stinks..the bed is noisy and pillows uncomfortable.

Considering the price of the hotel stay it seemed a bit expensive.

We were disappointed that the room price did not include breakfast.

However, the food was not up to the standards of the high additional price you pay.

The individual meals were very expensive so we opted for the buffet.

We were disappointed that our rate did not include breakfast as expected and it was otherwise about R190.

where do you pay R195 for breakfast that looks like a wimpy, the City Lodge has better breakfast.

We did not stay for the breakfast as we felt this was very overpriced at R195 per person.

but the prices are steep and the quality is quite average.

It could have been fabulous, instead its cheap and bland looking.

A down side was that the breakfast was extremely expensive at R165 per person.

Breakfast cost : A dreadful price - the pricing definitely needs revisiting by Protea as it is a deterrent  not an encouragement to eat at the hotel  .

(in general not about this hotel only:why would any breakfast cost R185.00,plain fish and chips R145.00?food prices so exorbitant to discourage anyone.can anyone explain this?all the prepared food wasted!!

however as we had gifted the stay it was a problem to pay with a credit card and we had to eventually hand the card and pin to the bridal couple to enable payment.

We didn't have breakfast at R185 each, too expensive.

After having breakfast, the same person said there is a bill to pay and insisted that breakfast was not covered,

During check out, I was advised that I needed to pay for breakfast for 1 adult for 2 days since my booking was only for a single adult's bed and breakfast.

but when you are expected to pay R145 for a meal and all you get is one drumstick and one other small bony piece of chicken, you feel taken advantage of.

Had reservations with this hotel and requested cancellation months in advance (well within cancelation policy)..  many assurances my charges would be reversed..

There was four of us and the waitress asked would you like something to drink while you decide what to order , so we ordered four Cappucino's , they took a.bout twenty minutes to arrive and when they did they were cold , by then there was a manager in sight and he arranged fresh ones .

Requested that Brenton call me back and at a stage was told that I should call him back.

I specifically requested for a low floor room, twin beds and extra towels.

We asked the front desk for a legible copy of a map of the Midlands Meander.

I requested two mattresses for my boys to sleep on the floor and the staff sorted this out and made up the beds.

The aircon was not working, we asked for a blown light bulb in the room to be replaced on Saturday and despite reassurance, nothing was done for the entire duration.

Everyday the asked if they could do something for us (from manager till housekeeping).

The next morning we requested another room.

We requested a early check in which was not a problem.

but had a damp smell and when I asked for a two- prong plug to charge my phone was told that they never had one - Really!!.

I had to request a room change at check in as they ignored my new section request when the booking was made.

I asked for an invoice and am still waiting for it before I pay.

Going for breakfast, the person at the dining entrance only asked for our room number, we thought all was well.

In fairness to the hotel I have never asked for a late check out.

Given the card states a complimentary upgrade is normally granted I asked to see what the pre upgrade room looked like.

We then realized there was hardly any toilet paper, when the lady brought the towels we asked her for some more toilet paper and this never arrived.

Stayed one night over a weekend with my daughters, we had asked for one double and one twin, got 2 doubles and they didn't offer to change the bed configuration on check-in, which was uninspired.

In fairness, we have experienced this same problem throughout the Protea Group and would request management's attention to rectifying this small,

when I asked her name she sais she is nompumelelo.

The service at the check in counter was great, the restaurant staff only partially.

Neat, clean and comfortable accommodation supported by excellent management and staff.

however I would appreciate being notified when my food was ready instead of it being placed on the side for dust to collect.

The little town of Hilton is absolutely charming band is worth a visit on the weekend.

A good spot for a night or two if you have family to visit or business in the area.

Besides the unexpected R 20 tourist fee in my own country upon checkout, great visit.

We stayed at the Protea Hilton Hotel for 2 nights while visiting the KZN Midlands.

Attitude of reception staff :***** exceptionally friendly and went out of their way to help , fetch pool towels .All done with a gracious smile .It was like visiting family , the staff were lovely and a real credit to the Protea brand .

What a wonderfull surprise we had when we visit the Protea Hilton Hotel in Pietermaritzburg the passed week.

I visited the Protea Hilton while on business in Pietermaritzburg.

In the evening I use to take a walk in the hotel area, and visit the kitchen garden.

Here I am again back to Protea Hilton and it's nice to visit this place again, I had another experience to overlook at rain pours throw my window at Hilton Hotel.

Having stayed at this hotel many times over the last three years, my return visit yesterday was just as excellent as ever.

I normally visit Protea Hotels because I trust that service is par excellence.

However on this visit, the curry of the day was chicken.

I would love to visit the place again one day, the hospitality was on top from the staff members.

This is the one and only place that feels like my second home visit after visit.

The hotel is well located for visiting the Midlands Meander.

We also visited the Midlands Meander this hotel was an easy point to work from.

As part of the Golden Horse casino complex, the hotel is definitely aesthetically pleasing with the horse statue fountain in front.

Their rooms are away from the noise which makes one forget that its located in the casino complex.

The hotel is located within the same building complex as the Casino, hence there were a lot of activities to keep us busy.

I was charged an overnight rate (1 adult and 1 7 year old child) R1,800 (I see your website charges R1,300).

The hotel could make an effort to improve on cellphone charging ports as well as location of electrical plugs to accommodate people with back/hip challenge who are unable to bend to the very lowest points for utilizing the electrical plugs.

In fact I'm considering cancelling my rewards card and joining Protea card and taking my business there.

We where finally seated,one junior staff member was put in charge of the group drinks and meal orders.

When I got tired of waiting I provided them with an imprint of my own card.

Should consider offering guest full DSTV packages or should be an option when checking in at additional charge.

I really enjoyed the stay I can go there again if I get the chance, the atmosphere was good and the staff was friendly.

The food are tasteful and the service is also good and efficient.

Very busy and trendy hotel in this part of the KZN .

Tge resturent vibe was very nice and warm temperature which was very comfortabke considering it was a little cold in the evening when we arrived and encouraged one to stay longer than innitially planned.

Amenities around the hotel are up-to-date, 2G wifi daily just to mention the few.

Suggestion : offer bridal couple complimentary stay when they marry at the golden horse venue, also it would be good for the room of the couple to be decorated e.g rose petals, tea light candles.

Very comfortable and pleasant stay in the Golden Horse Casino Southern Sun hotel.

As part of a group of 10 businessmen, I recently stayed at the "Golden Horse Casino Hotel" which is also known as the Southern Sun.

Hotel gives direct access to the Golden Horse Casino.

the cleaning was very poor indeed, toenail clippings in the bath!

Whilst the overall arrival experience in this establishment sets a high bar and expectations for the remainder of your visit, including quickly changing a twin bedded room to a king size bedded room, on my first trip to this hotel, poor service delivery especially in the onsite restaurants which is shared by the adjacent casino and entertainment complex, let down the remainder of the stay.

Turgid service and food of pretty poor quality.

but the signage at the hotel was extremely poor.

The hotel is expensive, and breakfast was poor.

The only restaurant that you can book to your room is the Vigour & Verve which had a limited menu (no seafood), the food was average and the service very poor - had to complain having waited almost an hour from when we sat down.

Management made an attempt to rectify this ,However it was too little too late 
Guests are restricted to eat at V & V restaurant and no longer at John Dorys 
Hotel restaurant has a limited menu and few are unavailable due to lack of supplies .

but I didn't feel a lot of disturbance as such.

but I have never heard any irritating sound in the middle of  the night.

however be noisy when visitors leave the casino during the early hours of the morning.

The noise levels at night are extreme - partying people waking up other guests.

If you want peace and quiet this is not the hotel in PMB.

Since there is a casino it is very noisy.

but needs sound proof walls as the music from downstairs could be heard and was soo disturbing for my elderly mum.

the noise level prevented me from sleeping well.

Better measures should be put in place to avoid Hotel guests being disturbed at night.

Incessant noise from slot machines whilst the car park is littered with the wrecks of cars abandoned by those inside with gambling addictions, spending their last cents on the hope of stardom.

too much noise i could not put my head down for a min.

Also noisy plumbing reverberates around the room especially when a neighbouring room is running the shower or bath.

Ground floor rooms and rooms very close to the casino and restaurant can be a little noisy.

Hotel is noisy as hell if you stay at parking lot side.

Rooms are away from the casino so it would not effect you regarding the noise levels.

The hotel is noisy and the staff loud and unfriendly.

As a regular traveler there is nothing more of putting than walking into a hotel room smelling of smoke.Furthermore the hotel operates a casino and patrons leaving in the early hours leaving the venue revving there engines right underneath your window.

The room signs for the doors are old, dirty and disgusting to touch.

stop feeding us rotten food, rotten meat especial the wings.I stay with my family from 21-24 January 2019 and have a few issues with the hotel.1) The first night food was horrible.

The airconditioner air was toxic and made me cough.

Better measures should be put in place to ensure that the No Smoking Policy is adhered to by Hotel Guests and causing other hotel guests discomfort and pain. 2.

I must warn upfront that internet bookings seem not to go through, so it's best to call ahead to confirm that they have your booking otherwise you may be in for a nasty surprise should they be fully booked upon arrival.

Not ideal for someone who is asthmatic as smoke permeates everything.

The night was unbearable with asthma and sinus in a room smelling of cigarette

I will discourage spending a night there unless you can tolerate cigarettes.

Something has to be done, secondary smoking is more dangerous and harmful to non-smokers.

We then took a chance at the Golden Horse Southern Sun and were gladly welcomed and helped so efficiently

The service and friendliness of the staff was amazing.

Hotel staff offered an outstanding service, form security, room service and the resturant staff.

Excellent service from all the Golden Horse, from the ever receptionist, to the breakfast and dinner waitors, who take and delivers orders efficiently, the kitchen staff as well.

Really enjoyed my stay and the staff was professional all the way.

The lifts are always responsive and there is a casino

when i arrived at the hotel the reception staff gave me a welcoming smile that made me feel welcomed.

Although dinner at the V&V is limited, the staff serve it with such smile that it feels like a 5* meal.

Staff are welcoming and go an extra mile to see to it that as a guest my needs are met.

Tancredi has a lovely warm atmosphere and Ann was incredibly welcoming and hospitable.

From the moment of my arrival I felt so at home, greeted by the most delightful lady, so warm and with a bright, shining smile.

I loved the attention to detail, perfect timing and welcoming vibe!

The room was superbly decorated, clean, and fresh!!

Great ambience, clean, neat and tasty breakfasts prepared by Ann the owner.

on our recent trip to KNZ we did a detour from Durban to visit Maritzburg for the museums, architecture and art gallery, the city is buzzing with commerce and people and our stay at Tancredi provided a welcoming relaxing contrast.
