The hotel complex has everything you need, places to eat locally (Try Chefe Steak House and Sea Basket near the Pingo Supermarket) and bus stops outside for trips in Funchal.

The complex was lovely and there was always plenty of available seating by the pools.

There were also 2 pool bars at either end of the complex.

There is a very good  Pingo Doce supermarket in the shopping mall that is "underneath" the hotel complex, and a fabulous ice cream shop (Venezia) on the promenade 5 mins walk away.

Excellent Hotel complex with lovely suite rooms with separate bedroom, living room and galley kitchen with microwave, fridge and hob.

Spent a wonderful week within the Eden Mar Complex.

This is a fantastic hotel complex in a wonderful setting.

The staff are excellent and the whole complex is exceptionally clean.

The pool complex was excellent, with options for sitting in the sun or shade.

There was an extensive breakfast buffet in the PortoBay Hotel in the complex.

There is a Pingo Doce supermarket under the shopping centre at the hotel complex, at the far end of the site nearest the sea, better value than the Spar supermarkets.

Got lost more than once in the hotel complex as it is joined to 2 other accommodations.

A great complex of 3 hotels within walking distance of the centre of Funchal .

This hotel is one of three on the complex.

We recognised many return visitors from three years ago, which is testament to the popularity of the Porto Bay hotel complex.

As I have said in previous reviews, the main asset to this hotel and resort complex is the seemingly unchanging staff, excellent throughout.

Free parking for about 50 cars outside the hotel itself, with access to more around the hotel complex.

Great entertainments from Atlantic Vibes and duos Luna and Armonia.

The room was very comfortable and the surroundings well looked after.

Just a wonderful place, friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere, very comfortable rooms, excellent food in all the restaurants.

but it does have a charm I like, it is clean and it feels homely with it's decorations, flower arrangements and plants.

Our 14th visit to the hotel,great staff ,great food very clean and the attention to detail in pleasing the guests  is second to none.

The whole atmosphere at Eden Mar is serene and comfortable!

Excellent location with variety of nearby restaurants.Gardens well tended and lush foliage.

but also has beautiful surroundings (including the gardens below) and an incredible sea view.

Breakfast is buffet style with a chose of traditional "English" cooked breakfast options, muesli, pastries, fruits, juices, various breads with a toaster, yogurts, tea and coffee  and started at 7:30am.

The four bars were comfortable with nice modern decor.

It is a lovely hotel with a very homely feel.

Indoor pools, nicely designed and again all clean and very well maintained.

We stayed here for 10 nights it is such a lovely place, the location, the surroundings plants flowers fruit it's a gardeners paradise so well kept, this is technically classed as 3 hotels

Lots of sun-beds around the complex and nice and quiet relaxing atmosphere during the day, the Porto Mare pool got a little crowded and a lot of sun-beds were reserved quite early in the day

The atmosphere was elegant, warm, and sociable.

The vibe here is quiet relaxation which is perfect for us.

The grounds and gardens of the hotel were stunning, it was great to lie and relax in such beautiful surroundings.

We stayed at Eden Mar one of the Portobay hotels alongside Portobay and The Residence and so were able to enjoy the most beautiful landscaped gardens and pools, restaurants and facilities of all.

The gardens are large enough for you to wander and enjoy their orchid garden and the variety of sub-tropical plants or simply to relax on a sun-lounger or enjoy the many viewpoints out to sea.

.the breakfast was excellent, the pools and garden areas immaculate and the Happy hour a great place for a swift one or two before eating out at one of the numerous local restaurants.

It's like relaxing in the botanical gardens with a pool to keep dipping into.

Breakfast at Alfama is always lovely, delicious food in a peaceful setting around the gardens, a great way to start your day.

The gardens were well maintained and the promenade was just beyond them for an evening stroll.

We love the gardens, the plants, and sheer size of the gardens which are lovely to walk through.

Superb gardens and pools areas, always plenty of sun beds available with bar service in all areas.

Our favourite spot being right near the herb garden not far from the main pool, occasionally getting a waft of sweet smelling herbs as you lay relaxing in the sun.

We loved the breakfast, there was something to do for everyone, from the pools, the gym, the play area….beautiful gardens and great gym.

Lovely rooms, we had a ground floor superior room.

The hotel grounds are stunning, trees and flowers everywhere, very well maintained and the sun loungers are dotted all around the grounds so you don't need to go to the pools if you would rather relax in the gardens, plenty of shaded areas too.

We’ve stayed at the Eden Mar many times, the grounds are stunning,  the staff are extremely attentive, the reception area is always helpful in particular Manuela.

The hotel and grounds are spotless and well-maintained.

There was no problem to get four sun-beds together as the hotel grounds are very spacious.

The grounds and pools were great and there was never any noise or rowdiness, day or night.

The grounds and gardens are also so pretty.

You can use the facilities of the Porto Mare which is connected by the corridors, literally you just walk through the hotel or through the grounds and can use any of the swimming pools, bars and restaurants.

The grounds are amazing and well kept, really lovely surroundings and the pools were all clean and spacious.

We had a lovely suite, comfortable, spotless and with a super balcony overlooking the beautiful grounds and gardens.

Travelling from Luxembourg we were able to avoid all that and could enjoy two weeks from 9 to 23 January.

The lunch at the pool bar was poor quality and expensive and the menu needs a revamp.

Air con poor, fridge was faulty as just filled with condensation instead of cooling.

One disappointment was the poor service at the bar area for happy hour at Oceana, only 1 waiter and with it being table service no other way to get a drink.

but got a poor response and no indication of the chances of an alternative.

After a shaky start, when we were diverted to Porto Santo due to poor visibility at Funchal airport, the weather was almost perfect for the remainder of our two week stay, with only the odd cloudy day and temperatures in the 20s, reaching 26C on a couple of days!

We received a poor welcome from a receptionist who was too busy talking to a colleague to even greet us.

The lighting in the bedroom area was poor with two dim wall lights and a light in the alcove/dressing table area, to actually see and find clothes in the wardrobe was a major task!

First impressions are poor as the entrance is down a side street with cheap bars and restaurants nearby

We thought that the entertainment was poor and amerturish and very little that was aimed at children.

The quality of towels in our room was poor this year, nearly every day one of our towels would be either threadbare or have  a hole in it.

The smell is obnoxious and added to the the rather poor attitude to customers we regrettably won't be staying there again.

I have seen many reviews commenting on the poor breakfast choice and at one time I may have agreed.

The Reps meeting with her lasted approx 1.30hrs and was informative and helpful so dont listen to any poor reports, yes some info we didnt need

While we were experiencing this cold food and poor service for a second time, we were informed by another holiday maker, that there was another much bigger and better restaurant that we should use in the sister hotel Porto Mar.

Loved our room with a lovely sunset view and a kitchenette that allowed us to cook some meals. I slept like a baby as the beds were comfortable and the blackout curtains kept out the morning " sun ! )

We had two superb meals in the Alfama restaurant and the buffet breakfasts had every single choice imaginable.

The staff were very helpful and friendly, the food was amazing, the weather was brilliant and Funchal was fantastic.

Guests have access to two buffet restaurants for breakfast; we only attended the smaller one in Eden Mar as it adequately met our needs.

You can ask for vegan dish, and they have it in all restaurants.

The staff are excellent, food is good and the rooms are very comfortable.

Particular mention needs to go to Mary Paulo in reception, Felipe in the Alfama restaurant, and Ella in the Portofino bar.

The restaurants were excellent for breakfast and buffet dinners.

There are lots of bars and restaurants around the hotel.

Lot's of great restaurants within a few hundred meters from the hotel.

There are several bars and restaurants all excellent food and lots of choice.

This was important as there was a problem with the drains which meant there was a strong smell of sewers from the toilet room.

but the design of the balcony directed the  cigarette smoke from the room below directly into our room and balcony.

I guess  it must be the chemicals / salts they presumably put in.

but the bad drain smell outside the Eden Mar was horrible and put me off the Lido area,

though there was a slight smell of drains in our bathroom.

but nearby) was a strange experience though as due to mask wearing and the restrictions of two people in the lift at any time and the majority being couples or small families I 
never actually managed to meet or have a conversation with any other guests staying there.

Regular visitors of the hotel seemed to get better treatment by hotel staff who at times turned a blind eye to their smoking in the outdoor restaurants or made sure they were served first.

Smoking is allowed anywhere around the pool area and you might have to move if you don’t want passive smoke.

But worse was when they smoked, the smoke was on our balcony and if like us, you hate the smell of smoking it was a big downside.

though is that we are non-smokers and all of the patios appear to permit smoking.

although all the rooms are non smoking they do allow smoking on the balconies and if you are unlucky enough to have chain smokers next door or below as we were it was virtually impossible to enjoy our balcony so from that aspect we were disappointed.

The room we were given was old, tired and smelly.

One worrying issue was that people we met going out and became friends with had to move rooms because of a drain fault during the night thus feeling sick and headache, the guy was an ex services engineer and said during recent refurb they may have installed the toilet wrongly thus sewage gas leaking.

Any negatives yes sorry I have one,smoking around the hotel we are none smokers and find it anti social especially around the pool areas

Our room had an occasional smell of tobacco smoke.

but worth a short break but can be very noisy at night  with smokers on their balconies into the night and in summer we expect it might be more busy with families and younger children staying.

The only problem we had is on occasions strong smells from the drains in the bathroom

As should a stricter control of where smokers can puff away on cigars and cigarettes.

but the corridors to the bedrooms were dated and smelled musty, they reminded me of a 70s hotel in Whitby or Skegness.

You can smell it all the way down to the ocean.

Staff are consistently helpful, friendly and efficient as they always are and the new arrivals are an asset to the hotel.

The staff and service is second-to-none, absolutely outstanding on level.

Brilliant NY Eve, choice of different meal options and then transport (to and from) to see the firework display from the concourse of the local football team, views over mountains and harbour.

The staff in the restaurant and at reception were polite and the hotel was fairly clean.

The reception staff are excellent with room requests and are very welcoming on arrival.

The hotel is kept very clean in all areas, all the staff are efficient and friendly, it’s great to see so many still there from when we first visited.

An excellent place to stay, very well maintained with very friendly staff.

The location and surrounding is perfect for many activities, the service and personnel is nice.

In all, though, we would rather have spent another couple of days down in Marrakech where at least the riads have air conditioning (and better food).

- No bathroom extractor & no air conditioning, meant the only source of ventilation was to open the windows onto the gravel pathway, thus having even less privacy and the noise of people constantly walking past.

but had a comfortable KSB with plenty of wardrobe space, there was no aircon but in its place a ceiling fan and a free-standing fan, both of which a little antiquated and rather noisy.

However - a point to note if you’re there in the summer - THERE IS NO AIRCON!

The rooms are ample size with a working fireplace which is needed some nights since they do not seem to want to operate their heating system.

No Tv, no wifi in rooms, everyrhing seemed cost effective.

Note, fan only, no aircon, meaning we kept our balcony door open for most of the time to let the breeze through.

Again no aircon and very hot indeed, even at night - 26 degrees C at night (October).

The room was a bit of a disappointment, quite a sooty smell from the fireplace and no air conditioning so quite hot (there was a noisy standard fan we could use).

The only downside is that we expected a 4 star rating and from what is presented on the website of this place to have air conditioning, we had sleepless nights due to the uncomfortable heat.

Only thing is we were there during Aug of 40 + heats, no air-conditioning (because of the location in the mountain) and with single side window there is almost zero circulation of air.

Only faults were, no air conditioning - only fans.

Unfortunately it was un seasonally warm and the room did not have air conditioning and the ceiling fan was noisy and did not work very well.

The hotel has retained - and indeed respected - the tradition and architecture of the kasbah and berber way of building, so to be clear, the rooms do not have air-conditioning.

The lack of air conditioning wasn't an issue for us either,

Even a small investment into air con portable towers might make a big difference .

While there is a fan in each room, there is no air conditioning so sleeping did become difficult.

However, the rooms were not set up for this type pf temperature - they were freezing!

The staff were lovely and very helpful, the decor is beautiful and the food was great.

The view of the mountains, a nice camel ride, the cats, the meals, and the undisturbed atmosphere of the hotel definitely contributes to a relaxing stay.

And the atmosphere once the day guests are gone is lovely.

Also the actual hotel building which is very Moroccan and lovely - the various public rooms in the hotel are beautifully decorated and quirky.

The rooms and common areas feature a "shabby chic" style.

In terms of decor, shabby chic is all well & good and the place definitely has charm,

The grounds are vast, lush and incredibly maintained, with water features and seating dotted around in thoughtful locations.

It's spacious, well designed, a feels like an oasis.

Don’t come expecting the kind of slick service you might experience at a 5* chain,

The quality of the bedding, the rooms and styling of the whole place is just beyond chic.

Food was exquisite and staff were so friendly, welcoming and attentive, in a relaxed and effortless way.

The food is lovely, the staff are kind and the rooms sumptuously yet comfortably furnished.

The moment you walk through the doors you will feel at home, the decor is stylish

The hotel is beautifully positioned overlooking the Ourika Valley, and has wonderful lush gardens of many varieties, with lots of picturesque spots in which to sit and read or just relax.

We knew the style was rustic charm, with, for example, Wi-Fi that was sometimes weak - we accepted this.

The design, both structurally and decoratively, is magnificent - an endless supply of beautiful and interesting views, detail and texture that demand to be photographed.

I loved the way it’s decorated  - very eclectic (there’s a huge stack of old radios in one of the sitting rooms) whilst still being very Moroccan.

The room is so big and beautifully decorated.

The Atlas Mountains surrounding the hotel are stunning and the gardens are really lovely.

We took a trek with a guide to the Berber Market and had lunch at Nectarine Gardens.

The place has lots of beautiful settings to enjoy the views and the gardens and many nooks to get yourself lost in a book.

It has the most beautiful gardens comprising olives, rosemary & lavender topiary with fountains and many terraces and lawns.

What makes this hotel so special are its absolutely beautiful gardens and terraces, and lovely pool.

The swimming pool area was pleasant and surrounded by delightful gardens.

There is a lovely, small, sheltered pool and a vegetable garden stocked full of fresh produce.

We had a Suite with the Garden View and  superior rooms.

The products from your garden left my skin feeling so soft.

The views are extraordinary and the gardens beautifully maintained.

The gardens are extensive and lovely to walk around and there is a reasonable sized pool with plenty of sun loungers.

The gardens are nothing short of exquisite and there are endless seating areas where you can experience the wonderful tranquility that the location offers.

Room 1 has a double door also to help with potential noise, and its own garden terrace overlooking the valley and river.

The pool was lovely and it is clear they take pride in the upkeep of the gardens which were pristine - there was always at least a couple of staff working on them.

The pool is divine and the gardens are filled with fruit trees, water features, animals (including two donkeys), vegetable gardens, sports equipment such as boules and table tennis, and more secluded seating areas than any guest could possibly use during their stay.

The gardens are lovely - full of rosemary topiary with views of the mountains.

The gardens are extensive and worth exploring, with lots of places to sit, relax and take in the views.

There is a wonderful vegetable garden not to be missed.

The staff it impeccable, the food delicious and the grounds make it feel like you are in a huge garden.

This place is definetely worth a visit! Greets from Luxembourg :)

The staff were not specifically attentive or welcoming nor forthcoming in making suggestions/ helping to plan one’s time beyond the information in the hotels booklet.

The owner has created a unique paradise with amazing facilities and service in the Ourika Valley.

And that the rooms weren’t a downgrade.” Extremely condescending to my mom.
