The staff in the restaurant and at reception were polite and the hotel was fairly clean.

The hotel is kept very clean in all areas, all the staff are efficient and friendly, it’s great to see so many still there from when we first visited.

.the breakfast was excellent, the pools and garden areas immaculate and the Happy hour a great place for a swift one or two before eating out at one of the numerous local restaurants.

Nice clean rooms, superb breakfast buffé, beautiful indoor and outdoor pools.

but it does have a charm I like, it is clean and it feels homely with it's decorations, flower arrangements and plants.

Our 14th visit to the hotel,great staff ,great food very clean and the attention to detail in pleasing the guests  is second to none.

The rooms are very clean and our maid kept them that way during our visit.

Eden Mar and its adjoining hotels are spacious, modern, very clean and well maintained.

This is the 3rd time we had stayed at the complex and as previously we found the hotel spotlessly clean, relaxing and with all the amenities and restaurants around the location is wonderful.

The hotel complex has everything you need, places to eat locally (Try Chefe Steak House and Sea Basket near the Pingo Supermarket) and bus stops outside for trips in Funchal.

The complex was lovely and there was always plenty of available seating by the pools.

There were also 2 pool bars at either end of the complex.

There is a very good  Pingo Doce supermarket in the shopping mall that is "underneath" the hotel complex, and a fabulous ice cream shop (Venezia) on the promenade 5 mins walk away.

Excellent Hotel complex with lovely suite rooms with separate bedroom, living room and galley kitchen with microwave, fridge and hob.

Spent a wonderful week within the Eden Mar Complex.

This is a fantastic hotel complex in a wonderful setting.

The staff are excellent and the whole complex is exceptionally clean.

The pool complex was excellent, with options for sitting in the sun or shade.

There was an extensive breakfast buffet in the PortoBay Hotel in the complex.

There is a Pingo Doce supermarket under the shopping centre at the hotel complex, at the far end of the site nearest the sea, better value than the Spar supermarkets.

Got lost more than once in the hotel complex as it is joined to 2 other accommodations.

A great complex of 3 hotels within walking distance of the centre of Funchal .

This hotel is one of three on the complex.

We recognised many return visitors from three years ago, which is testament to the popularity of the Porto Bay hotel complex.

As I have said in previous reviews, the main asset to this hotel and resort complex is the seemingly unchanging staff, excellent throughout.

Free parking for about 50 cars outside the hotel itself, with access to more around the hotel complex.

We stayed at Eden Mar one of the Portobay hotels alongside Portobay and The Residence and so were able to enjoy the most beautiful landscaped gardens and pools, restaurants and facilities of all.

The gardens are large enough for you to wander and enjoy their orchid garden and the variety of sub-tropical plants or simply to relax on a sun-lounger or enjoy the many viewpoints out to sea.

The accommodation,food and facilities were greatbavd the customer service was outstanding first class

It's like relaxing in the botanical gardens with a pool to keep dipping into.

Breakfast at Alfama is always lovely, delicious food in a peaceful setting around the gardens, a great way to start your day.

The gardens were well maintained and the promenade was just beyond them for an evening stroll.

We love the gardens, the plants, and sheer size of the gardens which are lovely to walk through.

Superb gardens and pools areas, always plenty of sun beds available with bar service in all areas.

Our favourite spot being right near the herb garden not far from the main pool, occasionally getting a waft of sweet smelling herbs as you lay relaxing in the sun.

We loved the breakfast, there was something to do for everyone, from the pools, the gym, the play area….beautiful gardens and great gym.

Lovely rooms, we had a ground floor superior room.

The hotel grounds are stunning, trees and flowers everywhere, very well maintained and the sun loungers are dotted all around the grounds so you don't need to go to the pools if you would rather relax in the gardens, plenty of shaded areas too.

We’ve stayed at the Eden Mar many times, the grounds are stunning,  the staff are extremely attentive, the reception area is always helpful in particular Manuela.

The staff are great, the rooms are lovely and the grounds beautiful.

There was no problem to get four sun-beds together as the hotel grounds are very spacious.

The grounds and pools were great and there was never any noise or rowdiness, day or night.

The grounds and gardens are also so pretty.

You can use the facilities of the Porto Mare which is connected by the corridors, literally you just walk through the hotel or through the grounds and can use any of the swimming pools, bars and restaurants.

The grounds and gardens of the hotel were stunning, it was great to lie and relax in such beautiful surroundings.

The grounds are amazing and well kept, really lovely surroundings and the pools were all clean and spacious.

We had a lovely suite, comfortable, spotless and with a super balcony overlooking the beautiful grounds and gardens.

The grounds are amazing: Thoughtful interesting planting, great views and excellent pools.

Travelling from Luxembourg we were able to avoid all that and could enjoy two weeks from 9 to 23 January.

The lunch at the pool bar was poor quality and expensive and the menu needs a revamp.

Air con poor, fridge was faulty as just filled with condensation instead of cooling.

One disappointment was the poor service at the bar area for happy hour at Oceana, only 1 waiter and with it being table service no other way to get a drink.

but got a poor response and no indication of the chances of an alternative.

After a shaky start, when we were diverted to Porto Santo due to poor visibility at Funchal airport, the weather was almost perfect for the remainder of our two week stay, with only the odd cloudy day and temperatures in the 20s, reaching 26C on a couple of days!

We received a poor welcome from a receptionist who was too busy talking to a colleague to even greet us.

The lighting in the bedroom area was poor with two dim wall lights and a light in the alcove/dressing table area, to actually see and find clothes in the wardrobe was a major task!

First impressions are poor as the entrance is down a side street with cheap bars and restaurants nearby

We thought that the entertainment was poor and amerturish and very little that was aimed at children.

The quality of towels in our room was poor this year, nearly every day one of our towels would be either threadbare or have  a hole in it.

The smell is obnoxious and added to the the rather poor attitude to customers we regrettably won't be staying there again.

The hotel interior in many hotels of Madeira in in poor maintenance condition,

I have seen many reviews commenting on the poor breakfast choice and at one time I may have agreed.

The Reps meeting with her lasted approx 1.30hrs and was informative and helpful so dont listen to any poor reports, yes some info we didnt need

While we were experiencing this cold food and poor service for a second time, we were informed by another holiday maker, that there was another much bigger and better restaurant that we should use in the sister hotel Porto Mar.

Loved our room with a lovely sunset view and a kitchenette that allowed us to cook some meals. I slept like a baby as the beds were comfortable and the blackout curtains kept out the morning " sun ! )

We had two superb meals in the Alfama restaurant and the buffet breakfasts had every single choice imaginable.

The staff were very helpful and friendly, the food was amazing, the weather was brilliant and Funchal was fantastic.

Guests have access to two buffet restaurants for breakfast; we only attended the smaller one in Eden Mar as it adequately met our needs.

You can ask for vegan dish, and they have it in all restaurants.

The staff are excellent, food is good and the rooms are very comfortable.

Particular mention needs to go to Mary Paulo in reception, Felipe in the Alfama restaurant, and Ella in the Portofino bar.

Just a wonderful place, friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere, very comfortable rooms, excellent food in all the restaurants.

The restaurants were excellent for breakfast and buffet dinners.

This was important as there was a problem with the drains which meant there was a strong smell of sewers from the toilet room.

but the design of the balcony directed the  cigarette smoke from the room below directly into our room and balcony.

I guess  it must be the chemicals / salts they presumably put in.

but the bad drain smell outside the Eden Mar was horrible and put me off the Lido area,

though there was a slight smell of drains in our bathroom.

but nearby) was a strange experience though as due to mask wearing and the restrictions of two people in the lift at any time and the majority being couples or small families I 
never actually managed to meet or have a conversation with any other guests staying there.

Regular visitors of the hotel seemed to get better treatment by hotel staff who at times turned a blind eye to their smoking in the outdoor restaurants or made sure they were served first.

Smoking is allowed anywhere around the pool area and you might have to move if you don’t want passive smoke.

But worse was when they smoked, the smoke was on our balcony and if like us, you hate the smell of smoking it was a big downside.

though is that we are non-smokers and all of the patios appear to permit smoking.

although all the rooms are non smoking they do allow smoking on the balconies and if you are unlucky enough to have chain smokers next door or below as we were it was virtually impossible to enjoy our balcony so from that aspect we were disappointed.

The room we were given was old, tired and smelly.

One worrying issue was that people we met going out and became friends with had to move rooms because of a drain fault during the night thus feeling sick and headache, the guy was an ex services engineer and said during recent refurb they may have installed the toilet wrongly thus sewage gas leaking.

Any negatives yes sorry I have one,smoking around the hotel we are none smokers and find it anti social especially around the pool areas

Our room had an occasional smell of tobacco smoke.

but worth a short break but can be very noisy at night  with smokers on their balconies into the night and in summer we expect it might be more busy with families and younger children staying.

The only problem we had is on occasions strong smells from the drains in the bathroom

As should a stricter control of where smokers can puff away on cigars and cigarettes.

but the corridors to the bedrooms were dated and smelled musty, they reminded me of a 70s hotel in Whitby or Skegness.

You can smell it all the way down to the ocean.

Staff are consistently helpful, friendly and efficient as they always are and the new arrivals are an asset to the hotel.

The staff and service is second-to-none, absolutely outstanding on level.

Brilliant NY Eve, choice of different meal options and then transport (to and from) to see the firework display from the concourse of the local football team, views over mountains and harbour.

The reception staff are excellent with room requests and are very welcoming on arrival.

An excellent place to stay, very well maintained with very friendly staff.

The location and surrounding is perfect for many activities, the service and personnel is nice.

The staff were unfailingly cheerful and helpful, and the facilities excellent.

This was only our 3rd time ever of being All Inclusive and it worked very well for us as we wanted an effort free week, and that’s what it was.

Food is good quality all inclusive and there's always something available.

This is a massive all inclusive resort hotel with over 500 bedrooms.

Food was outstanding, the best we have had at an all inclusive.

This all inclusive hotel was refurbished in 2023 to a high standard.

Spent an amazing all inclusive week at the RIU Gran Canaria.

Mini bar (water and cans of juice) filled up every 2 days which is a nice touch and is part of the all inclusive.

We took a last minute trip to Riu Gran Canaria and stayed for the first time on an All Inclusive vacation.

Overall, this has been the best all inclusive resort we’ve stayed in to date.

The entertainment team were great and the evening entertainment was the best we’d seen at an all inclusive resort.

An impressive and amazing all inclusive hotel situated by the promenade and the Atlantic Ocean.

It was the best all-inclusive experience we have had; both food and drink were of very good quality, plentiful and readily available.

We picked the hotel as we’ve stayed in RIU hotels before and wanted the all inclusive offering.

The All inclusive drinks ,  I could honestly not pick fault with the quality.

Food was  good  and plentiful - we chose the Dunas Buffet for breakfast and  lunch  which was typical all inclusive food .In the evenings booked Amore Mio ( Italian ) or the Atlántico  grill at no extra cost for evenings .

This is only our second time of staying all-inclusive despite travelling lots,

Food for an all inclusive was very good loads of choice.

It’s a lovely hotel with extremely friendly and helpful staff, clean, comfortable and truly all inclusive.

The resort was full of bars - wonderful to see premium spirits being used for all inclusive - a special touch and never waited more than 2 minutes to be served and plenty of cocktail choices too!

Suberb food, especially the Asian restaurant, very nice.

Las Dunas for breakfast and lunch, Alantico for for lunch and reserved dining, Kaori for reserved Asian dining.

We ate in the Asian restaurant one night and the food was very good.

Nicely landscaped with several pools, bars and dining facilities, including a very good Asian restaurant and evening entertainment within the complex.

Loved the vast choice of places to eat; main buffet restaurant plus three specialities of Canarian, grill and Asian.

Asian- really nice, basically Chinese food, noodles, rice, sushi, samosas, ribs- I didn’t expect it to be nice

Lots of choice for food .. we dined in the Asian , Canarian & Grill for our evening meals … booksble & less busy than the Dunas restaurant.

The all inclusive food is very good with the Asian restaurant in particular providing a great alternative to the regular buffet food.

The Asian restaurant is well worth a visit and the Grill in Atlantico for dinner.

It's worth getting just to book the Asian restaurant (and Grill/Canarian) and also can report any issues without the hassle of contacting reception.

The head chef in the Asian restaurant made me beef stir fry with rice noodles on 2 occasions and even got me some gluten free soy sauce to have with my sushi!

We booked both the bbq and Asian restaurant whilst here, we actually booked the Asian a second time time while we were eating in there we loved it first time around!

Food varied, would definitely give the Asian Restaurant a try.

What a great break before Christmas, fabulous hotel, everywhere spotlessly clean and all the staff so friendly.

The hotel is very clean, drinks great, staff very friendly and in a fabulous location.

It’s big, grand, attractively designed and all areas are kept very clean .

We have stayed at the hotel many times during the last decade prior to the first refurbishment and have enjoyed excellent service and unmatched quality of catering and cleanliness.

Spent a really relaxing holiday for two weeks.Every thing was as expected,clean,tidy good food, nice staff and generally good fun.We have been there before the alterations and it was every thing we expected.One suggestion ,to have some sort of shade on the upper deck of the Sunset bar.Thank you for a lovely holiday.

Just returned from a lovely week, the staff are all very friendly and welcoming, the whole place is kept beautifully clean, there are plenty of sun beds, the only area that gets really full is by the infinity pool.

Everything was impeccable again and we were happy to see the hotel after the wonderfully successful renovation!

The bedroom as indeed the rest of the hotel was spotlessly clean.

Our room ( 134 ) which was on the ground floor, was clean & spacious , there were a couple of ware and tears to paint work

Location: Straight onto the Boulevard via the back gate, beautiful area, very clean and felt safe too.

The hotel had recently been closed for 3 months, I believe, in order to refurbish it and it certainly looked clean and bright.

Staff, food and cleanliness as good as ever.

Very clean staff Very nice.plenty of sun beds unless you want to sit by the infinity pool you will have to be up before 7 to reserve you bed.

You will find cleaning staff everywhere, all hours working, the place is kept immaculately clean.

The cleanliness and organisation is top class and takes place almost unnoticed.

As you would expect from a Riu, from the cleanliness of the rooms and all communal areas this hotel is spotless.

but we had a fantastic view of the garden, pools and then the ocean.

The garden and grounds are well maintained with lots of outdoor activities to keep you busy.

Check in easy and as a Riu club member we were able to choose our room and stayed in 4069 which had a double bed and views of the gardens and a great sea view.

Garden view rooms are spacious, include tea/coffee facilities - no milk

We were on the 4th floor with views across the pools and garden.

Fantastic views of gardens, pools and sea from room, and lovely mountain views from lifts and stairs.

The view from the balcony seating over the garden to wards the ocean memorable.

It has now been refurbished since our last visit and the pool areas and garden areas have changed slightly and we’re kept to the highest standard.

We had a room on floor 3 facing the gardens and pools which was ideal.

Please look after the cactus gardens,  they are impressive.

As usual a Riu hotels are big & this one was no exception.The gardens were lovely to walk round.Plenty of sun beds around the grounds.If you fancy a sunbed round the infinity pool forget if you are not an early riser.One of the staff told me you must be up around 6am.

but alternative eating areas overlooking the gardens, or the sea was a lovely experience.

The gardens are beautiful and clearly well kept.

The hotel is huge and outside areas very spacious with pathways through manicured lawns and gardens leading to three pools and other facilities.

The WCs were clean and the gardens are well kept and beautiful.

We did really enjoy the Gospel singers on Christmas Day and the bands that paraded around the gardens and Purple bar on Christmas Eve and New Years Day.

The hotel is set in beautiful, spacious gardens with multiple swimming pools and lots of seating and sunbeds.

The room was nice, with a view over the garden and the sea.
