We stayed in Girasoles suite, while it was beautifully furnished and maintained by housekeeping, it was a little noisy from the restaurant next door and had a very small bathroom.

There was a lot to love about this place: the location was excellent because we were never more than 10 minutes away from almost every attraction; the hotel was beautiful and quirky; staff were extremely helpful; breakfast was amazing; the restaurant and bar next door was also very fun.

-Rooms are sunny: the drapes are very light and thin so do not expect a dark room.

Could see a bit of the sunrise from the window, more up on the roof.

The room contained a window and a ceiling fan for those warm days (which was only in the afternoon)

but not much cross ventilation, typically just one window per room (and no A/C, but that's usually okay in this climate).

but there's little ventilation in the rooms that are in the main house and so even opening all doors and windows and turning the fan on is ineffective in getting the air moving.

He has a fan in the doorway which I thought was facing the wrong direction until I realized that he was trying to keep the smoke from permeating his workspace and his lungs.

Rooms have no keys screen doors provide ventilation with ceiling fans.

Out room was stuffy, as there was nth cross ventilation.

but you will want to use the fans to avoid feeling stuffy.

All the rooms at the Casa Colonial are spotless clean and open to the garden or the large veranda, and none of them are stuffy or musty.

but one room is tucked in a corner and therefore lacks ventilation.

There is no air conditioning to help cool the room down.

And there are flaws -- no locks on the doors, no pool, no air conditioning, and it's a few extra blocks from the center of Oaxaca.

Amado the Casa manager is very friendly, thinks outside the box and speaks fluent English.

When someone answers the door after you've been out wandering the streets.

Unfortunately it is in an unattractive neighborhood about a 20-minute walk from restaurants and tourist attractions.

The meals were healthy and carefully prepared, We thought it was a bit noisy at night (barking dogs in the adjacent neighborhood).

I never felt the slightest threat of danger or fear in town day or night.

Even during the past troubles -- I was there in 2006 -- I never once felt in danger.

The only negatives were a neighborhood dog and a rooster who woke up considerably earlier than I would have without them!

Cigarette smoke will likely be the aroma which disturbs your sleep, starts your day and accompanies your evening margarita.

Some of the rooms have no windows that open and as a result smell moldy.

though there is an adorable dog, Chapulina, there was never a time that i saw any dog poo or smelled dog urine ever while I was there.

Taxi "chauffer's' are most accommodating and trustworthy.

My wife had made a telephone reservation on Jan 9 and cancelled within the hour on the phone since I was making a reservations for 12 nights on line.

After giving our payment details over the phone (after a lengthy conversation about the suite itself), the woman making the booking announces that we have booked a standard room. No!

From the room we could see Guelaguetza (the outdoor amphitheater) up in the surrounding hills and hear the church bells that were ringing throughout the city.

The gym is small and has few machines to work out.

The hotel conforms to an American style, AC, first floor pool, small gym, carpeted halls, and so on.

Hotel Gym is tiny and offers a few aerobic options .

I spoke Spanish to them and greeted them warmly to little effect.

Holiday Inn is a very nice hotel, great breakfast and their staff as the cleaning crew and the front desk staff are the best!

Our room opened to an inside patio so it was not as noisy. The atmosphere on its patio was relaxed and friendly (they have rescued birds there which I loved.)
