The room was clean, the water was hot, and the air conditioning worked.

Good location, easy parking, clean rooms which are big enough for 2 adults and 2 kids, fair prices

but you get sparking clean rooms, all amenities you could need, and a delicious breakfast included.

Our room was spotlessly clean and spacious with a lovely view of the pool area.

Housekeeping did a wonderful job at keeping our room spotless and well-stocked.

The rooms are very clean and comfortable, Madga our housekeeper paid attention to every detail.

Everyone was friendly and helpful and the room was immaculate.

This hotel has much to offer: big, clean rooms and/ or junior suites/ suites  with all of the accompanying amenities in excellent working order, something that can sometimes be a challenge in Mexico.

The rooms are still very clean and well maintained on a daily basis and the beds are very comfortable.

Clean rooms and common areas, at the same time some rooms are noisy.

The large room was immaculate, with very comfortable beds and wonderful white cotton sheets and duvets to look forward to each night.

If you want a budget friendly hotel with clean rooms, big, comfortable beds & a nice shower in Oaxaca with a great location, this is it.

The room was clean and everything worked well.

The Holiday Inn Express provides all you need for a pleasant stay in Oaxaca, large, clean rooms, attentive staff, and a great breakfast.

It is about a 10 minute walk from Sto Domingo Church or a slow paced 20 minute walk to the zocalo and the markets.

though I have had better (they are a bit slow refilling the hot food when it's gone and it goes cold very quickly).

The only drawback was the elevator - there is only one and it was crazy slow and even a couple of times not working at all!

The only thing that would been an improvement would have been a small refrigerator.

The only thing we would have liked was the use of a small fridge.

Only very small complaint is the absence of mini-bar, or at least a small fridge.

Couldn't flush toilet paper which isn't the most pleasant at times.

Secondly, The toilet paper is apparently not supposed to go down the toilet.

When I was there, the street was torn up, as they are replacing the sewer system (so for now, at least, no flushing of any paper),

Cons: Extra toilet paper is not left in rooms, so you may run out.

but both of us were taken aback by the signs that we were not to put toilet paper in the toilets.

Toilet paper goes in the waste basket, not the toilet. Assume this to be true anywhere you go in the valleys.)

Also they ask you to put a bucket in the shower while water is heating up, so they can reuse this water for other things.The breakfast is really basic.

My only complaint, and it's a minor one, is that hot water in the shower was often a long time in arriving, and once I gave up after waiting maybe 10 minutes.

The only inconvenience I encountered had to do with the water pressure at this eco-friendly, water-conserving hotel.

Our room was upstairs and water pressure was poor, once in the midst of a shower I had no water - glad I didn't have a head of shampoo.

but comfortable, it takes ages until the warm water in the shower shows up, but that's about the only minor thing to remark on the downside.

I appreciate their practice of providing a bucket to collect water in the shower while waiting for the hot water to reach the shower, so they can use said water for cleaning and watering the luscious plants throughout the hotels courtyards.

I was very careful and still got sick from I guess some water for my shower that slipped down my throat.

Only problem I encountered was that when it rained a lot, water leaked into my room onto my clothes, and there were also lots of mosquitos, so it wasn't comfortable to sit outside much.

The shower had only lukewarm water and like a previous reviewer, my bathroom was all wet after a shower despite shower curtain being closed.

The room (actually a studio) was dark with no windows.

The room I stayed in (number 5) was small, cramped and dark, into which a double bed was just about squeezed in.

but otherwise nothing special, and a bit too dark.

but rooms are dark due to few and small windows.

Room D in which I stayed is dark and has an uncomfortable bathroom with no door.

If you're likely to be wandering about in the courtyards at night or early in the morning, bring a flashlight because it's dark.

We had been showering twice a day due to it being so hot in the day, I finally got new towels

It's important to get the right room because the beds in 2 rooms I've stayed in are really uncomfortable (I've made some room recommendations below, having moved around last year because due to work I was in and out).

Due to a vehicle breakdown  a week later, I ended up staying 1 night at this place with my son and was quite taken aback at unpleasant atmosphere.

Two small complaints:
- The common spaces get very dark at night, due to very dim eco-friendly lighting (once I went to get water at 6 am and literally all the lights were off).

On a noisy street, due to heavy bus and car traffic, which worried me at first,

Due to construction nearby the hotel, loud banging sounds were heard throughout the nights and kept me awake.

The breakfast was reasonable, well there wasn't much choice,  a fellow guest who stays there regularly said that there is usually a lot more choice and suspected it was due to the lack of tourists.

They are a small family owned hotel located just a 10 minute walk from the Zócalo, close to Santo Domingo, and a half a block from the popular Parque El Llano.

The location is within walking distance to most attractions in the city.

The location Central maybe too Central with because of on going noise which obviously is out of control from hotel perspective .

Good location yet still quiet, only a ten minute walk from the Zocalo and close to the most beautiful area of the city.

This hotel is in a great location for walking central historic area.

Fabulously located close to Santa Domingo de Guzman this gem is cool clean and quiet and priced just right.

The location is very convenient, all the plaza’s are within walking distance.

LOCATION: ATM 1.5 blocks away, across from park.

Perfect location on nice & safe street close to santo Domingo.

They make "bricks" from plastic bottles, which will be used as building material for houses of poor families in Mexico!

The only negative is the breakfast is pretty boring with poor coffee, and no fruit or juice at all.

And it was a bit annoying to have to ring the doorbell to open the gate every time we came back after 8pm - and wake up the poor employee who was there.

but in the end, (in the middle of the night), I managed to wake up the poor guy in the reception and he caught the lizard for me.

So it was a little disappointing that breakfast at Las Mariposas was so poor.

but it uses a poor saloon-style swing door that covers up about 50% of the bathroom entry opening.

Would recommed this place, staff was very friendly helping us find transportation for other little towns we were heading to, rooms were very clean and cozy, silent and private for a small hotel, would definetely recommend!

When we arrived we got an upgrade from the normal room we booked to a much bigger studio, because it was available.

This eco-hotel is one of the nicest hotels we have ever been to: The rooms are superclean, quiet and you can have either rent the room only or the studios with kitchen use.

Las Mariposas is a beautiful, immaculately clean, wonderfully maintained hotel with  individualized rooms and studios surrounding lushly planted courtyards.

We stayed in one of the studio rooms, which was incredibly comfortable, warm and cozy.

We stayed in one of their studios so we got extra space, table / chairs, fridge & cook top.

We had a studio apartment with a small kitchen, since we stayed 2 weeks.

If we return to Oaxaca (and there's a good chance since 4 days was wa-a-a-ay too short) we will stay here in one of the studios.

Our studio suite was spacious with a full fridge/freezer with kitchenette and had lots of storage closets.

The hotel itself is clean and nicely decorated and the rooms (I had a studio) are very pleasantly decorated.

This is an eco-friendly hotel with both standard rooms and studios with kitchenettes that are perfect for longer stays.

I've stayed are the hotel before (rented a studio 2 times) and can give the property a wholehearted thumbs up!

My private studio room was well equipped  with plenty of closet storage and small kitchenette.

The studio was in the back courtyard and was very quiet (although some guests were very noisy).

The studios are the best buy option (600 pesos) and are very spacious,

We had a studio with kitchen which was great because one can explore/shop at the markets and make food at home.

I have a large studio reserved for next July and cannot wait to return to Oaxaca and Las Mariposas.

I really appreciate the commitment to being socially responsible - they have solar panels, an extensive water collection and re-use system, and clearly support socially responsible vendors and tour guides.

The staff were amazingly courteous and helpful, particularly Cristel, who helped when we wanted to book a tour on our last day in the city.

The Mariposas management helps residents schedule tours, find great places to eat, discover shopping bargains.

The hotel is beautifull and lovely decorated and the staff is friendly and happy to help with advice or booking tours.

The tour we booked through her was excellent, as was her recommendation to have dinner at La Olla Restaurant a few blocks away.

Excellent customer service and local knowledge from front of house staff, concierge services provided where excellent (tour bookings, dining recommendations, spa appointments).

The office staff is helpful with finding tours, private drivers, taxis, etc.

The staff is very friendly and helpful in arranging tours or recommending restaurants.

They were helpfull booking tours and let us store the luggage/use bathrooms etc the whole day after we checked out.

They arranged for guide to a local venue for the seven of us, and because of their relationship with the tour guides, we received an excellent private tour - far better than expected.

The service was excellent (only the young men in the evenings tend to be monosyllabic) otherwise the advice and suggestions on getting around, tours, places to go were top notch.

- We booked the Monte Alban tour with them and the guides were very knowledgeable and friendly.

On our first day we were off to see Monte Alban and had help to join a fabulous tour.

Teresa and her daughter, Lucia, were very helpful in recommending restaurants and sightseeing.

Firstly, dont go with the tours at the hotel.

What a beautiful hotel in the center of Oaxaca.

You are just steps away from the center of the city.

For being in the city center I found it very quiet.

A great place to stay if you want a hotel in the centre of the city, one block from the zocalo.

This hotel is well situated in the city center.

Fantastic location right in the centre of town and easy walking distance to main buildings of interest including churches and museums as well as some very good restaurants.

- close to the city center and Cathedral - lot of restaurants, bistros, shops, small nice boutiques near by.

It is a stones throw from the Cathedral in the centre of Oaxaca and therefore close to lots of restaurants and bars.

This hotel is virtually in the centre of Oaxaca.

Most other hotels we visited have a large center courtyard,

The hotel is in a courtyard building with the centre open to the sunshine, if there is any.

Easy walking distance to anything you would want to see as part of the historic center city area.

Walking around is the best way to see the little nooks and crannies of the Oaxacan center.

Excellent location, just a block from the zocalo (old town center, where spontaneous celebrations seem to break out hourly and a noisy friendly gathering place for families, townsfolk, musicians, and vendors).

Staff were all really excellent, nice terraces to relax on, and it is right in the centre close to everything.

This hotel is an excellent base for exploring the historical center of Oaxaca.

The location is beyond perfect for accessing the center of town and the on premise restaurant is nice if not as fantastic as other, nearby, places (go to Catedral for breakfast, you won't be disappointed).

It is a lot more expensive than other tours U find in the center.

The only gripe was that our room with 2 large beds had 'window' looking out onto the corridor so was very dark.

Standard rooms are quite cramped and can also be dark.

Rooms are small, stuffed with dark wood and wrought iron furniture, small art hangs in a random fashion, tiles are clean

but rather dark because the only window, opening on to the courtyard, had frosted glass.

The rooms we stayed in were also rather dark, the suite being worse, Furthermore, with the suite the bathroom window faced the opp.

The rooms were OK; our first room had a window into the dark hallway, so the room was dark.

but dark room brightened by plentiful lighting.

also too much light came inside the room as the courtains were not dark enough

no minibar at the rooms.

Deltas: some of the rooms at the back of te hotel are pretty dark, no natural light reaches them, noise travels very well from common areas tonall rooms, so if u get a loud group of people arriving late and drunk, you are in for a unpleasent night, there is no parking for the hotel, so u have to part with US$20 per day to park about 2 blocks away.

but the hallway itself is very dark and cold.

Also, the door to the room had a large pane of frosted glass, which was impossible to cover so the room was not completely dark.

The decor, furniture, and vibe are so charming.

The hotel was meticulously cleaned every day, down to the last architectural curlicue.

We had a room on the first floor in the back of the hotel, which helped create a quieter atmosphere.

It is very clean, charming, rustic and culturally decorated.

The rooms, patio and restaurant are very tastefully decorated.

but is also such a haven of peace once inside, with nice decorations, a library, comfortable places to sit and relax.

This location looks very much like how do even imagine old Mexico beautiful Oaxaca Art  making the property cozy and beautiful .

Our colorful room has AC and a whirlpool.

However, it's the ambiance of the place that made my experience memorable.

It’s beautifully decorated and I felt the culture of Oaxaca throughout.

Many beautiful tipical, well chose mexican decor details embellish the establishment.

The room was nicely decorated and very clean, had a very good bed

It is outdated (although in very good condition - it's more an aesthetic comment).

The location couldn't be beat and you can be in the middle of the action and within walking distance of most sights, or enjoy the courtyard ambience and a delicious coffee at the hotel.

The parador has classic Mexican decoration and furnishings and the atmosphere is warm and friendly throughout.

With colour, good vibes, and fantasticly convenient location, we felt ever so comfortable, safe and at home during our 8 night stay.

The service was again excellent, the rooms first class and quiet, and the atmosphere carefully decorated Oaxacan.

The breakfast was good and the overall decor of the hotel is nice.

We stayed there 2 nights, and, unfortunately, the second one was a sleepless one – across the road, there was a concert in a bar, and the music was so loud we initially thought they were singing in the lobby of the hotel.

But if it bothers you to see caged wild birds (as it did our party), that will be a downside.

The only thing I was unhappy about is that one weekend night the music from the discotec next door woke me with very loud music.

Air-conditioner worked well and wasn't too loud.

Every night ,the people checking in were loud  and very noisy ,which echoed throughout the building.

that is to say extremely loud and our double room was as close to it as one could get.

Only drawback that you should consider when choosing a location in Oaxaca's center, as this one, is that it can get loud at night, if you're looking for relaxation and you're sensitive to noise just be aware about it.

however need acoustic isolation because the noise from the street is too loud some times.

Being so close to the zocalo, the rooms on the street side might be loud

but there were very few guests, and with all the open areas and hard tile / plaster surfaces, it could get loud quickly.

The only downsides were that there was a rowdy group also staying there at the same time and there is virtually no insulation from interior building noise.

It's LOUD  if you are not in your room you hear everything from the streets.
