but you have zero control of heat in your own room and there is NO air conditioning!

There is no heat in the rooms (no individual thermostats).

The only thing that I'm not a fan of is the lightning in the room.

We had one issue with the air con whereby we came back after a day out to the room being 40degrees and not being able to change it

We were told that air conditioning was available,

The A/C in our room was just BARELY keeping up with the heat and it was only mid-to-high 80's during our stay - this happens in older properties with older AC systems so it's not really a ding, more of an issue to keep in mind.

The aircon in this room was actually in pieces and not functional.

HOWEVER, they should not even be promoting that the hotel has air conditioning.

Only drawback would be there is no AC so I can see it getting very hot if you stayed in summer.

Room temperature was just hot, the thermostat didn't work.

We had to turn down the thermostat to 40 and leave the window opened all the time which finally brought the temperature down to 70,

Our air conditioner sounded like a diesel engine.

but the noise of the other rooms was awful and there is no fan system to drowned out the noise.

By dated I mean no outlets, old squeaky bedding with dips in the middle, unfriendly and unhelpful front desk staff.

Being in Midtown Manhattan, it can be siren noisy,

Another thing to note, it got a little noisy on one occasion as the rooms we had were facing the playboy club and there were police in the early hours dealing with some of the late crowds.

but their room was st the front of the hotel so was fairly noisy , the bathroom rooms are badly in need of up dating and the tiling looked awful I’ve seen better in Egypt

Unfortunately on our last night we was woken to hear water dripping from the bathroom light, presumingly from the bathroom above us.

Only downside it can be a little bit noisy so just be aware.

My only faults is that there is a charge for wifi even in reception and the rooms are very warm at night - quiet loud when you open the window from the street side of hotel.

The price did not justify the smells or noise coming from the halls or the lack or help from the staff.

but a real pain getting out, but then NYC traffic is always painful.

We travel there often and have stayed in many, usually disappointed with the room size, noise, staff, and other essentials.

You could hear the people in rooms around us moving on their beds!

But I can't provide the full rating because of the following points:

The bed was rather small and noise if you move around at night so for two people it was not that comfortable.

The room next to ours was occupied by a loud visitor who, among other disturbances, played his electric guitar and electric keyboard at random hours of the night to the delight of his many drunken visitors, who sang along.

I awoke in the middle of the night and the noise wouldn't let me get back to sleep.

Next door deli offers good coffee 
If you want a quiet sleep ask for a room on the poolside (and do not expect the pool to be open)
WIFI is very slow and they charge an extra $ 6.00 per day for it :-(

I found the room to be very poorly soundproofed and I could literally hear the conversation in the room next door.

The bathroom door is heavy and did not lock.

We had two rooms and both had interconnecting doorways to other rooms, you can basically hear everything that goes on next door, including when the couple next door decided to have some noisy ‘fun’ 2 nights running!

The door to the bathroom was incredibly heavy, felt like lifting 200lbs everytime you tried to slide it open or close.

You can literally hear the people next door!

One of my parents is very old and could barely open the door and close it that many times and I also had trouble opening it and I'm pretty strong.

The shower door on the bottom was bit dirty

It was a big minus that the bathroom door was a sliding door so the toilet could not be shut off.

The only negative point is that the room doors slam shut when left to close by themselves.

And bathroom has just a sliding door so you hear everything from bedroom

But after we entered, we found there was a connecting door.

although the bathroom was small with a sliding door.

This meant the door never really closed and there were gaps down each side meaning you could see out / into the bathroom.

Only downside is that the bathroom sliding door does not close properly (and it not built flush against the wall), you can see inside from either side so it provides essentially zero privacy or soundproofing.

We were gone all day long and when we came back they had put a Happy Birthday greeting on our door and left a muffin and come cookies for us.

You can hear conversations and doors in adjacent rooms.

Also, going above and beyond to put posters on the outside of our doors to inform the other guests on our floor that there was a Bachelorette Party in progress.

but a confused member of the housekeeping staff came knocking on my door at 12:10 wondering why I was still there.

but not the point you need to step out of the way to open a door.

The room was immaculate as far as being clean.

Our housekeeper was excellent & always had a clean room upon our return & any supplies we requested were in the room.

The room itself is clean and spacious by New York standards.

There are too few elevators, because going down from 7:30 to 9 in the morning you may have to wait for the elevator for 20-30 minutes.

Only 3 elevators for a hotel that holds that many people is not a good plan.

We got rooms on the second floor - so no wait for elevators!

Elevators are often full and took long to get up and down from our room.

As other reviews mentioned, breakfast area was busy every morning (we were there at 9am most days), and the elevator could get a little backlogged,

but I’m not sure how they could rectify - elevators are very busy every day because the hotel is busy, and hotel is starting to look a little dated because of decor.

In addition, you need a key for elevators, and the front door even in the afternoon at times.

Two elevators were not enough for the entire hotel.

Security is excellent as room keys must be used to enter the building, use the elevator, or enter the stairwell.

We were panting, and felt and looked hungry and exhausted, so Lizbeth from front desk promptly and gently gave us our keys to room 1105 while we helped ourselves to a cup of complimentary lemon water, and then we headed to the elevators, expecting them to take forever to go down

The roof-top elevator motors make a banging noise when the elevators start or stop moving.

Elevators (3), can some times be a little challenging.

Breakfast and elevators crowded (expected in a large city) -  close to Broadway Shows!

We exited the elevator on our floor and there was our room.

Elevators might take some time depending on the time of the day

However,
my 75 year old mother and I had to take the stairs from the 9th floor each morning as the elevators were so busy.

The only two downside of the hotel was the elevator because it took a little longer and the breakfast felt cramped, other than that everything else was perfect.

Both lifts were broken during our stay with staff manually operating one.

My room was spotless and the staff was very friendly, particularly in the breakfast room.

Rooms were clean with plenty of fresh towels.

My hotel room was clean, and there was some rooftop access as well.

Hotel is good value, basic breakfast, rooms are clean and quiet.

Most importantly, first-class hotel service with complimentary breakfast, super clean rooms (cleaned daily), and friendly and professional staff from the front desk to the breakfast bar.

We have been to NYC a couple of times before, so we knew that the room would be small,

The only thing is that the rooms are small, so 3 big adults is the max for your comfort,

but it still never cooled down, so even though it was in the 30s outside overnight, that air refused to enter the window and cool the room down.

We turned on the window ac to  cool it off and block out noise.

Their are also window AC units which are loud and not new and mini blinds with no curtains.

The air-conditioning is a window unit, its not modern,

Radiator made noise a lot and we had to place a towel over it to stop hissing .

Not to mention that it wouldn't heat the room and we were freezing!

Hotel itself was a bit dated and we had some trouble with the heating -either turn the radiator off and be cold or have it hissing at you all through the night.

The cleaning ladies left our windows open (hello it was snowing) and turned off the heater.

The old fashioned radiator made such a loud, banging noise that we had to turn it off just to sleep which meant we slept in the cold.

Because the air con units are in the window, there is no way of muffling the noise from the street and we got zero sleep on night 1 because of the constant horns.

First of all the negatives, shabby dated decor, low room at back noise comes from plant machinery is louder than room aircon machine.

but rattled sometimes but you needed it as the room soon got warm, good choice of tv channels 
Shower was hit and miss, and the room itself needs updating but a good size especially for Manhattan.

Beds were comfortable, air conditioning was a bit loud.

But its room only No tea/coffee making facilities or water provided I was on the 5th-floor front facing the road and it was like a hot house No A/c had to turn off the single rad and open the window for ventilation  which in turn brought the traffic noise into the room 24 /7 very basic small bathroom with a shower

Upsides- clean and plenty of storage, downsides there was only one plug in the whole room and the heating would not turn off - the air con unit was noisy and not great for getting to sleep.

The room was warm without ever having to turn on a heater.

but it was a Saturday night, which is when most hotels are noisier and there was no internal sounds or disturbances from other folks.

Quite noisy as expected (this is New York after all) so bring ear plugs.

but the noise level from workers working all night outside of our room was insane.

but its an older hotel, but we didn't sweat it (LOL) it did the trick - and I can speak to the other hotel guests experience, but all hotel air units make noise, I wasn't bothered by it at all.

but the sound seemed to get worse - imagine if you were sitting under an enormous jet engine that was getting ready to take off.

but that also only worked on occasion so it’s possible it’s the power /sockets in rooms 
Beds are very old and make a lot of noise and you can feel the springs .

It made a high pitched squealing noise off and on all night!

Mine has bluetooth and I ran a white noise app from my phone to drown out noise as well,

We were given a 5th floor room at the front of the hotel and I have to admit it was noisy with the road below.

As other reviewers have said, the bed DOES make a ridiculous noise when you sit on it,

I got the impression that the staff weren’t overly enamoured at my request - we were even told it hadn’t been that noisy!

I recommend staying on the 4th floor or higher and away from the street so you don’t hear the street noise early in the morning.

The bathroom was spotless and the room had a mini ironing board that I used to take the wrinkles out of my packed dress shirt.

If you want a clean room at a great rate, in the middle of everything, in a building with character and history, and can wait a few minutes for hot water, then the Hotel St. James is for you.

Our window overlooked another hotel or an apartment of some sort which we didn’t particularly like

Since my last visit, both the rooms we were in had newer, darker wood blinds, which was an improvement from the white mini-blinds from prior trips.

The windows have wood blinds that can't do absolute darkness

but what we were after as didn't spend much time in the room, would recommend they get curtains as the blinds in room were old and didn't work properly and let light in at night time.

My only recommendation is to add curtains to the windows to reduce the light coming in and open up that bar in the lounge area.

The windows do not block any street noise so bring earplugs to go to sleep.

I needed to do a bit of engineering on the blinds to stop the dressmaking room across from us seeing into the room and at night we had to run the hot water for at least 5 minutes before we got hot water enough to shower.

They could use some curtains, the blinds weren’t in good shape.

There are no curtains, blackout or otherwise.

The windows were only single glazed and it sounded like they were open

The shower curtain marks were not cleaned until our third day.
