Situated in the heart of Madrid, the always vibrant Plaza del Sol, a few meters from the metro station, this hotel is a good choice.The (not very spacious) room was clean all times and the front desk personnel were very polite and always helpful.

Immense noise generating from Plaza del Sol crowds precluded sleep; room was too hot, and staff advised air system didn’t work so we should open windows to cool the room down.

We were the only ones there and he could have started on any window

but even closing the window didn't quiet the room for sleep.

When the sun went down I would open the windows, it it would cool down by the time I closed them and went to bed.

Opening the window doesn't do anything because it faces an interior courtyard that doesn't have any circulation.

but we heard none of it when the windows were closed.

With a room facing into the square, it was loud until about 6am, even with windows closed.

Renovated ones seem to have better windows as friends inn other rooms couldn't sleep because of the noise (we took up 10 rooms and this was consistent feedback).

Our first night was in a room with a window onto all the action- it was REALLY loud.

but with windows and shutters closed there was hardly any noise.

Speakers and musicians use amplifiers and the very loud music and crowd yelling penetrated closed shutters and windows on the 4th floor.

I noted that previous reviews complained about late night noise from plaza and streets below and this was true with windows open

however there is a chance you will be awaken at about 4 am when the clubs get closed and all the youngsters pour from them to the square and group near the metro station under your window.

However we chose the high floors and the windows are insulated, so were not very disturbed.

We were not able to hear any noice from the very busy streets around due to the window soundproofing.

Means you have to keep the windows closed at night though.

Considering clean room, room setup and facilities I consider it is a 2 star hotel.

The room itself was clean and comfortable,

Beds comfortable, rooms very clean and great for a quiets nights sleep, you even have a second door to close out any noise there may be.

Shabby, very cold in the room, pillows are uncomfortable, smell at the bathroom.

but did not care that the whole lobby smellt like cigarettes because others were smoking right next to the door.

Dirty tables, glasses and cups left as were ashtrays, stools on top of tables - just strange that the area wasn't maintained and laid out.

Hotel smelt like drainage, the ‘hotel Uber service’ was a con - more expensive than a metered taxi.

I would only improve the smell in the reception area (there was a strong smell of sewage) and use eco-friendly dispensers in the bathrooms.

In the Marriot auditorium, nearby, there was no unpleasant smell.

One bit of advice, get a room not overlooking reception as it can be noisy with guests going outside to smoke at all hours & arriving & departing.

The restaurant food smell is reaching the corridors and rooms.

Kick up a stink, eventually they check us in to our room.

If your preference is for a non-smoking room then make this clear on your booking, I am sure they have some

Amazingly this hotel has a bar that closes at midnight and then they start serving an express breakfast at 1.30am.

You could smell it as soon as you entered the room.

I was also able to have a smoking room, which is not so common now.

but a room deemed as non-smoking and reaks of smoking, it should be them taking responsibility.

but upon entry we found the overwhelming odor of cigarette smoke, despite clear signage that no smoking was allowed.

The suite had a bit of a musky smell and we couldn’t open the blinds because the window faced the elevator shaft.

Only things we noticed was ac did not seem to work and there was a drain smell,

Towels smelled a bit funny—I think they might have been washed in vinegar to keep them white?

Only slight issue with noise from apartment from above kids running up and down making a hell of a noise and smell of cigarette smoke filled our apartment lounge through the heating duct every night- pretty sure all apartments are No smoking so someone was being disrespectful to others in the building.

though they had some odd plumbing problem that caused my first room to smell terrible (another reason I had to change rooms).

Unfortunately, the upgraded room was a bit dusty and smelled a bit stale.

The only problem is an aftershave like smell, in the lobby.

Unless you wanted your clothes to smell like cigarettes, using the self service laundry wasn't really practical.

but note that smokers are significantly higher in Spain than in other European countries.

I had to open the window a few nights to get some air and then of course it was a bit noisy by morning (also caused light to shine in very early) and I smelled meat cooking for some reason.

Also the room had a really really bad sewage smell when we first arrived.

We walked to Puerta del Sol and Paseo del Prado without much sweat.

Bath was every time clean: without another's hair, fungus or nasty sewage smell.

When we talked to some other guests in lobby, they told us that there was some odor in their room,

Yet our bedroom faced a very small light well, there was a constant unpleasant odor which did not really make it a place we wanted to relax in.

Unfortunately, this led to an awful chemical/off-gassing smell within the hallway.

As far as we could tell, the Sabitini Gardens of the Palace were not open, certainly the stairs directly across from the hotel were closed.

Just a note that the lifts are a bit small and it's weird and inconvenient that there's a stair for getting to the lift from the reception.

Dragging suitcases up some stairs to the reception can be avoided by leaving them next to an elevator at the street level; there was an obscure sign to that effect that we failed to notice.

We were escorted to an elevator that took us half a floor above the lobby and then walked down stairs to the desk.

The reception area is not at street level, so you have to wheel your bags up a ramp and then up stairs to get to the lifts to go to the rooms.

You can cross the street and enter directly the Jardines de Sabatini by climbing up a series of stairs and then from there head towards the Royal Palace, Cathedral and Opera House.

The stairs in front of the hotel entrance and the elevators required some efforts to move your luggage.

Just walk up the way you drove down to avoid a maze of stairs and hallways.

After you have checked in, you need to lug you luggage up a short bit of stairs - terrible for heavy suitcases - with NO help from the hotel, before you get to the elevator to get to your room.

4) there are a few stepls to get to the elavators and becomes difficult with heavy luggage without a dedicated bell desk.5) the frequency of the elevators is very bad they are only 2 elevators and had to wait ages ,although we were on the first floor we could have taken the stairs (couldn't figure out where they were I guess our fault) .

but there are stairs that go to the elalevator and no one offered to help withe our luggage.

They didn't have any rooms on the 4th floor and I ended up with one on the 5th, not ideal, especially when you had been out walking for a while a climb up stairs was the last thing I needed.

It is true that there are about ten stairs to negotiate from the lobby to the elevators, and we do not travel lightly,

No place is perfect, and the *only* minor issue with this place is that there is a set of stairs without a ramp for strollers.

The hotel lobby is small and there are several small sets of stairs to traverse to the elevators, again small by US norms.

Double glazed windows were super effective in keeping road noise out during the day.

Unfortunately the balcony was overlooking the main street whose traffic was noisy

but at the expense of really loud street noise from outside - not very comfortable.

There's quite a bit of road noise if you've got the windows open

There is a small balcony that overlooks the street,  With the door closed we  do not hear any street noise.

My only advice would be if you are a light sleeper, request a room away from the street because it is a busy street and gets noisy.

Tip number one: the hotel is on a very busy and noisy road so ask for a room at the back (we were initially placed in a room at the front on the first floor (or second if you're American)

The only down side was the street noise at night (traffic and revellers)

The rooms at the front of the hotel do suffer from road noise.

The hotel is on a major road so it is noisy at the front with the window open.

The only drawback was the location, by a very busy, noisy road.

but they are over a very busy road so there is some street noise.

We were on the 4th floor and did not hear any street noise that you would expect in a major city and despite what I saw in a prior review, the air conditioning worked perfectly and we actually had to turn it off at one point because it was too cold.

although the view was not great, it was very peaceful - especially as the hotel is situated on a very busy, noisy road.

The room was facing the back of the building so there were no traffic noise from the street.

The only one slight complaint was that the room faced on to a very busy main road which was really noisy at night.
