The concierge was a great and professional help, as was everyone at the hotel.

The staff was hit or miss on friendliness and usefulness, more often standing around talking to one another than engaging with guests.

From the minute we arrived until we left, the staff at the Royal Lyon was gracious and attentive.

The rooms, like the reception and other areas of the hotel, are decorated with fabric-lined walls printed with different scenes in either blue or red on creamy-white Toile de Jouy.

they failed to state which exit .. there are many which resulted in an overly long walk round Place Bellecour on a very hot day

When I got to check in, a number of staff appeared to be just leaning against the back wall.

but needed maintenance / upgrading - scuff marks on doors and walls, a hole in the bathroom door, peeling paper and a draft from the balcony doors.

Again, you’re surprised when you get to your floor because the walls are decorated by photographs of Lyon’s elegant buildings.

However, this is the only luxury hotel I’ve stayed in where the soaps are in pump dispensers fastened to the bathroom wall in true Premier Inn fashion.

but Mgallery are most of the time better looking that this one, more comfortable or of a better finishing.this one needs to be attend (some painting cracking on the wall, a shower curtain rod falling apart, bathroom toilet seat not well fixed).

but short cuts had been made - two marks on a wall had been painted over with just on brush stroke in a slightly different colour whereas it would only have taken 20 minutes to repaint the whole wall.

As someone said previously the bathroom products are fixed to the wall; at breakfast dirty dishes are not taken away from your table and you are left with no room; the hotel lacks a bit of atmosphere and we felt when we entered the hotel the staff just looked at us

The hotel itself had a  modern design and feel with opulent touches of days gone by - such as the use of fabric on the walls, not only in the rooms

however, the first evening we were there, there was a couple arguing very loudly in a room near us - so loudly that we could hear every word they were saying through the walls.

Had asked for a room with shower over 4 weeks in advance; got into room and the 'shower' hung down from ceiling  with no walls around it.

There was so much damage done to the walls and door mouldings by the cleaning trolley.

My knees almost touched the wall in front of me when I sat on the toilet.

I would say the only negative comment would be that there was no wall shower.

The walls of the tub are very high and there are no bars to hold when getting in or out.

But when you really start to live in the room, so many things made the stay below par, most notably the bathroom.

The bath (in the room) was a real luxury.

Some reviews mention rooms with no shower and multi-step access.

But then the toilet was downstairs without a sink.

There was quite a lot of dust in the room, the bath leaked from the waste pipe making the room smell like a drain.

but it was quite difficult not to spray water all around the bathroom
- Standing metal towel/wardrobe hanger could easily fall and it landed on a foot after pulling a towel from it
- Difficult to find location with need to engage a valet
All in all, value for money not very good.

but only after that happens, only if the room has a shower, and only if the price is comparable to a 4-star hotel, as that's what this hotel actually should be called.

though underwhelmed with the room which had no shower which at almost £400 for the night was somewhat surprising.

The bathroom was poorly constructed with the tiny shower and wash basins on one end of the room and then the WC down a hall on the other side of the room.

The sink was stopped up and could not be fixed because our stay was over a weekend.

On the first night, the cold water faucet in the shower in our lovely little suite was broken, so they immediately moved us to another suite, which was much larger and grander.

Unfortunately we will not be back ( also if you look closely very shabby in areas wooden sticks to stir tea/ coffee in rooms and no actual shower cubicle as well as a bath just a shower hose over bath !!

Our room had a bath in the middle of the room.

My wife, with a brand new hip, was not keen on the idea of climbing in the bath to shower.

Bathroom fixtures are old and the bathroom itself smells musty and is barely lit.

The bed is on a mezzanine and the shower spills out water onto the polished wood no matter how hard you try so it is a bit of a trip hazard.

When my husband took a shower in the open-to-the-loft bathroom, the water was alternately too hot then too cold and it made the already too hot loft more hot!

So top tips if you do pay to stay here - ask for a spacious room with a shower overlooking the gardens at the back of the hotel and on the first or second level to ensure you’re not up on the 4th floor where things may be more cramped and ceilings lower.

Because of an air con issue they moved us into a suite which was way too dark and overall the hotel needs a complete refurbishment.

however it was still very dark as the window looked out at the building directly facing the hotel (it is the old town after all).

Others have noted the rooms are dark and I agree,

Maybe because our room was one of the least expensive, it was a bit cramped and dark, with only two very small windows.

This resulted in the room being a little dark,

I'd read on TA that some rooms are dark so requested one with lots of natural light & this room had 5 lovely big windows.

It was decorated in very dark red with voluminous silk/satin curtains to disguise the lack of view

The only windows looked out over the atrium, so room is a bit dark BUT has excellent lighting at the bed for reading.

The hotel entrance is through a dark pedestrian tunnel in which a noisy automatic door reinforces the Adams Family image.

This place really is cool, it may be a little dark and the decor could be construed as a little over the top

The hallways are rambly, the rooms are uneven and a bit dark.

The renovations seem tired, and our first room (57) was incredibly dark, with heavy use of curtains to disguise the fact that the window looks out onto a very dark narrow courtyard the size of a large chimney.

So the curtains were closed the whole time to maintain privacy, meaning the room was very dark.

So I walked into this dark painted room with the toilet and sink were separate, and the only window was by the bath tub, which was also separate.
