As there is no lift in the hotel, it is best to bring small luggage bags.

We had the large family suite on the top floor and, while it was some work carrying suitcases up so many flights of stairs without an elevator, the view was well worth it.

Our room was up 40 steep stairs and there was no lift.

although without a lift be prepared for a few stairs.

The only negative is that there is no elevator so be prepared to climb the stairs or request a lower floor.

They were really helpful, spoke excellent English, and arranged for me to get the train via a taxi and Salzburg, thus avoiding the hell which is the station Freilassing - no lift - pretty ghastly if you have heavy luggage.

So, the first night was spent in a small, hot noisy room with very small bathroom and no fridge in the room, and none of the room accessories/services we had paid in advance for - naturally we agreed a very reduced rate for the first night's stay.

The only disappointment of our whole stay was the tiny bathroom which was also very dark,

The bathroom was tiny in our room which was a bit difficult,

however a bit disappointed by the room as it was in the back building of the hotel, had no balcony, very dark, with a very small bathroom.

but with a bit of a slog up the hill (we drove)

-  Gracious host (lugging suitcases up the stairs) with maps and tourist suggestions
-  Bathroom was modern and up to date.

Not only that he grabbed two of our bags and carried them to the train (up and down the stairs at the station) and put them on board with only seconds to spare.

Be prepared to do some walking up the stairs.

Now, don't get me wrong four flights of stairs are not my ideal,

On the down side there are no lift, should you on a member of your party have difficulty in climbing stairs.

A downside to the hotel is that there are no stairs,

He appeared to be impatient when we struggled to carry our luggage up the stairs and only helped by carrying the smallest bag.

But as I say this is a German hotel, not an international chain.

We are a family of four (two small children) and we travel quite a bit. Normally we stay at recognized chain hotels (Marriott, Intercontinental.  )

but the set menu for dinner (half board as they call it) was not to our liking, poor food choices.

We were on dinner bed and breakfast deal, dinner on Sunday night was average leaning towards poor.

The indoor and outdoor pools were lovely and the changing facilities were poor luxury.

There was no fridge and NO AIRCON in the room - it really got quite hot in the room in afternoon.

No air conditioning, tiny room so small you have to step out into the hallway just to get a decent lung full of air.

Bathroom radiators turned off after 2 days.

There is no A/C and it is quite warm here in July.

We also ate Dinner and breakfast at the hotel restaurant.

As there was no air con in the room, we had to have the door open and this meant that sleeping with the noise was difficult.

It was until then that I realized there was no AC.

Keep in mind that few hotels have AC in Berchtesgaden --

Rooms 54 and 55 had no heating, it was cold the entire time we stayed there.

However the real problem with the room was that it was perishing cold and heating was impossible  to turn on high.

We frequently had to close the balcony door as other guests are allowed to smoke on their balconies which cigarette smoke used to blow into our bedroom.

but the noise from traffic is quite heavy (fortunately it's not the case in the room itself, if you close the door to the balcony properly).

Also annoying were the many flies on the balcony, which came into the room if the balcony door was open.

As a 3 stars hotel, they have no teas or coffee provided in the room, no toiletries, the cleaning lady opened my door all of a sudden without knocking or any notice.

However, in one of the rooms the door lock did not work and it was impossible to close/lock the door.

the door to this area  was later closed and that issue was resolved.

however, we discovered that our key to Block B (where most of the bedrooms are) did not fit the door to that area - also the machine was only taking notes.

Each day we went out the door sized widow was opened and we had to sit in the evening with extra clothing.

Our rooms were clean, well equipped and having a good view on the town.

but in room some time is not work, the room was clean, the staff are nice, the Breakfast was good, parking is included the price ! !

From now on the stay was ok.

We were told different things regarding A/C.

but of course like too many European luxury properties, no thermostat in the room.

The only negative aspect is the lack of AC.

First, the air conditioning is not the normal forced air type,

The only downside is that while there is an a/c control in the room, it doesn't seem to cool down as much as I'd like.

One tiny drawback: no air-con, so Windows had to be left open all night, and the small main road through the Old Town right below our window turned out to be astonishingly busy/noisy at all hours!!

but even then there was little to no circulation.

but there actually isn't air conditioning; just a weak fan system that controls the entire floor (as the girl at the front desk explained to me).

The weather was unseasonably cold yet our room was too hot so I tried to get the aircon to work

It was very hot outside (and granted unseasonably warm) and the air conditioning was very poor.

Our room was fabulous - a 'Jenner Room' overlooking the hotel courtyard and the room itself was spotlessly clean with a fabulous shower and a very comfortable over-sized bed.

Good sitting area and the whole room was spotless.

but when you're staying in a hotel like this you do want your room to get a great clean as if new people where staying not a half clean just cause we are staying for several nights.

After taking one flight of stairs in the hotel, you can take the elevator to the higher floors.

We had to go up multiple sets of stairs, down many hallways through a couple of rooms and finally up an elevator and down the final hallway.

So if you are used to elevators and bellboys, not the place for you.

There is a flight of stairs to the lift .

It is in an old building with no elevator,

When we had stayed here before there was underground parking and a lift to floors from parking - this no longer exists, where the garage entrance was is currently a garage for an apartment house.

There were a lot of stairs before reaching an elevator to our room, so if mobility is an issue for you or you have a lot of luggage, you might keep that in mind when booking a room.

but the lift only goes from the first floor and there is a maze of corridors to navigate - not great with luggage!

Then, there were two more sets of stairs to go up to even reach the lift.

As the last one is a lift, which is only from the the 1st to the 2nd floor,

The only problem, was the elevator did not go to all the floors, which makes people of age a little  had to climb the stairs with the suitcases.

The only downside war the lack of wifi in rooms (could only be accessed around the reception area, and no lift to most parts of the hotel.

Confusing layout of hotel, a bit of a labyrinth to find room and elevator.

The hotel itself is a bit dated, and getting to the rooms is literally a maze of walkways, stairs, and an elevator.

The hotel was confusing to find our way round with the lift only servicing some floors and poor signage.

There is a lift (very small; one person and maybe 2 bags).

The elevator is available from the first floor.

Within the hotel there is no wheel chair access and no lift access to the first place.

from there you take another flight of stairs, plus two or three more short flights of steps before you even reach the floor that has the elevator.

but so many english speakers were there that it seems like that should be taken into consideration), the lift only helped us for one floor (there was a flight down from the parking lot and then a flight up to the lift).

Clean room, great breakfast with a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables and meat assortiment that would make anyone happy.

We were cautious as we checked in and observed the tiny reception area and maze-like halls and stairs that finally led us to our rooms.

There does not seem to be any means of access other than from a set of stairs on the main street.

Lots of wood, oldfashioned carpeting, heavy furniture and a maze of stairs and corridors.

Parking is a bit of a problem, and it is a bit of a walk, and there are a lot of stairs to manuver to get to your room.

but bit old fashioned and there are too many stairs.

Only downfall is lots of stairs to maneuver in wings of hotel.

Upon check-in we were not warned about the many, many twists and turns and stairs.

These stairs and passage way are not very obvious so, take note.

There are many stairs in this hotel, so if you do have walking difficulties please ask for a ground floor room.

There is no desk clerk at the hotel at night, there is no wifi in the hotel except if you are standing at the desk, and the whole hotel is really old and worn out.

You could only get wifi in the reception area

You could have better rooms and wi fi if you stayed in a hotel that cost twice the price

Wi-Fi, parking and noise over nights were attributes we have faced to daily.

No internet access in the rooms (but in common areas).

Also, we asked for the Wifi code and tried it,

Getting wifi in the rooms is now essential in 2016 and beyond.

If you want to stay in this town on a budget and don't mind being stuck in the 80s with no internet and carrying cash with you then definitely go for it.
