The rooms were clean and the bathroom very much so.

but the room was clean, although the beds were institutionally narrow.

We had a bright, clean room with narrow twin beds which were very comfortable and a well-designed small bathroom.

One could choose between automatic HVAC or open windows.

Not all that  comfortable especially if you have  a major function to perform  and the heating panel is  on and there is no extraction fan in the toil.

There is no aircon so blocking them out is impossible.

however, as it did not have air conditioning, I requested that we move to a smaller room that did as I don't tolerate the heat well.

The staff was very attentive and helpful, the rooms were clean and comfortable and the town was charming.

Room was spotless, spacious and I slept great.

The linen in the room was perfectly pressed and the room itself spotless.

I can't really find fault this hotel - the room was clean, staff very helpful, breakfast was delicious and the location was superb.

In San Sebastian everyone seems a bit rushed and jaded given they are primarily serving hordes of (mostly American) tourists who have fought for months to get a table.

There are other restaurants we used in town with hours that are suitable for American tourists who eat between 7-9.

If you like an overly priced (expensive) breakfast

If you like bland non-descript rooms (the bed was good though) 

If you like to wait during a 5 minute phone call by reception (before checking in) on why the other parador referred you to their sister parador (this one) with a wrong room price.

And on top of all that the bells in the clock tower next door were ringing the quarters all night long.

Just remember that the church bell chimes hours, it can be quite a wake up call.

Avoid rooms facing the square if you're bothered by ringing bells - having gotten used to the snoring and roosters and general noise of albergues on the Camino we were fine with that room.

The bells in the tower rings twice an hour throughout the night and woke me up each time.

but no one stayed there so you had to call for assistance.

but she begged ignorance and said she would check and call back.

However, the Parador at Santo Domingo de la Calzada is the one with the nicest and most attentive staff of all the Paradors we have been to (they tried calling and emailing us to inform us ahead that there will be a wedding in the hotel during our visit and it could be noisy

Rooms are clean and airy and well furnished.

Easy to find and room was clean tidy and comfortable.

The personnel were generous with their help and the room was immaculate.

From the moment we arrived we felt comfortable,  the young man at the desk was courteous and helpful, the room was impeccable, the bathroom large,  and having parking was a plus as the old part of the city is closed to traffic.

Our room was fine except for a persistent smell from the bathroom drains, solved by running water into the system.

but have a nice view of the church and tower, and if one has the window open, cigarette smoke from those smoking below will come into the room.

although personally I would prefer if they would not allow smoking there, especially cigars. .

They used an Ozone machine which smelled heavily of Chlorine.

Breakfast was sadly lacking, stale coffee and indifference to request for fresh.

Breakfast was disgusting, the ham and salami etc was off and the smell of it was disgusting.

He made it quite clear that he found us to be disgusting flithy pilgrims.

The couches in the lounge are worn and smell of the times when one could smoke indoors.

it smells deliciously like black licorice in there.

However the seating outside reeked of tobacco smell.

After a while I returned to reception, had to wait to speak with someone and was given the same instructions!

although driving up to bollards and waiting for them to lower is a bit challenging.

We were also dissapointed when we had to wait for our room, as it was not ready on our arrival.

We like  to get up early and get a head start on the day's walk so did not want to wait until the Parador dining room opened.

After waiting for awhile, we went to the bar and asked for service.

I had to hunt down my order after some 10 minutes of waiting for it to arrive so the pleasure of having a nightcap in the atmospheric and handsome hotel lounge was somewhat blunted.Given that there was only one other couple in the place at the time, this was rather disappointing.

but not worth more than a night - move on to the next parador - but right across the street is the cathedral with its famous birds - wait till you get there for the story!

Although the room was neat and tidy and had old world charm it had no aircon or a fan.With temperatures in the mid thirties it made sleeping very uncomfortable.The front desk staf really were not friendly or welcoming and the staff at breakfast were unfriendly to the point of being rude.

It is to hot during the day to not have some type of AC.

The parador has no air conditioning so this was completely unacceptable.

The day we arrived it was very hot and there is no air conditioning in the rooms - the other days were cooler and we were able to sleep with the windows open.

There is no air conditioning in the bedrooms.

What is unforgivable is that there are no electric fans available for guests.

Strangely, one was blowing in the housekeeping room down the hall.

The only small minus was that it didn't have some kind of airco or fan,but before going to the restaurant in the evening we opened the window and it cooled down sufficiently.

but would have preferred AC on a hot July evening.

BTW the main difference we were told be tween this parador and the other one in town is that the latter has air conditioning.

As others have mentioned there was no air conditioning and unfortunately no window in the bedroom (there was in the sitting room) to allow good airflow.

The only reason I can think of that would make sense for this Parador to have only 3 stars is that it doesn't have air conditioning.

No air conditioning meant our room was quite warm as it faced the setting sun, and opening the windows was not great because the staff took their breaks on the ground two floors below our windows, so we were treated to their smoke.

Other parador guests had also discovered the pool.

In this tiny town there are actually 2 paradores, Spain’s answer to save historical monuments while providing 4-5 star service to guests.

No smoking in the cloisters despite being open to the elements meant that guests smoked in front of the building.

but I expect a hotel of this caliber to offer them in the morning, especially for those guests who are leaving and do not have time for breakfast.

Pity staff could not communicate with the clients 80% of whom were English.The staff are young.

With Parador room rates falling in recession hit Spain you would think they would have the sense to obtain more share of the client’s spend with more appropriate food offerings.

Our room was clean and remind us of a small castle room - nice details with a view of the courtyard.

The staff were very friendly and accommodating and the room was clean and comfortable.

The bad: breakfast was at the lower end of the three star spectrum with very limited choices and surly service.

We spent two nights at this parador, and like others, don't really understand why it is only a 3 Star.

Rather amazingly, smoking was allowed in our room, for which they get only 4 instead of 5 stars.

This is one of two Parador's in a small town; the other one (Santo Domingo de la Calzada) is better known and has 4 stars rather than the 3 stars given to this Parador.

For us "big city" dwellers, it was an added luxury to be able to sleep with the window open at night and there wasn't a sound outside. Marvellous!

Although once we had closed the windows and shutters it was very hot in the room.

We had a room with a window that overlooked the square in front of the hotel.

however the one we were offered had an internal bedroom with no window.

The final celebration went on until 4am and we could hear every bit of it through the open window.

I did notice one or two cheap touches like the white plastic electric sockets and I didn't like the curtain pole much

We tried to gain access mid-afternoon following a walk only to find the hotel door closed against us.

Only one detail: there is no evident sign for the main door.

but don't expect anything of the village - it's pretty dead but there's a decent place for sandwiches etc right next door, the last building in the village.

We'd read poor reviews about breakfast in the hotel so had to move on to another village

The restaurant food and service was poor and joyless!!

there's no outside space except in the nearby cafes which cater for the many coach parties visiting the monastery and the dining experience is poor to mixed.

but the food was of a very poor standard, mostly microwaved and I found 2 of the dishes to be inedible.

Our room was clean and comfortable, and we found the reception staff very helpful.

Whilst the rooms are clean, spacious and well equipped the rest of the hotel lacks any atmosphere - unless you like the feel of an almost empty old people's home!

To add insult to injury, one of the “tapas” we ordered was soup for 6 euros.

The menu they have this in english on a Ipad so if your spanish is not up to date you still can order your food.

All the rooms are clean, well presented and kept immaculate by the attentive house staff.

Well, the smoke cleared and we napped and walked around the grounds and watched a few more people check in until it came to 8:30.

Things to improve
It is difficult to find the reception, there is no sigh pointing to it, also I do not see very well, and got really stressed out, to the amusement of the villagers sitting at the cafe in front.

Three of us stayed as a treat during our Camino, clean room twin beds and a pull down third.

though only one table, which ended up being used as a luggage bench.

As I entered the small restaurant and asked about my room, I noticed a few tables who were being served a simple meal, including one of bacon, eggs and chips.

We were offered the choice of a room in both: 40 euros in the Casa Rural or 55 euros in the Hospidería.
