The room we received in 2019 was a room half the size of the room in 2018 (which was a downgraded room).It was so cramped we had to put a suitcase in the bathroom in order to maneuver around the room.

That matters a lot to us as we rely on restaurant recommendations and in this case advice on the complicated train trips to and from Cinque Terre.

A case of food poisoning due to bad seafood from another restaurant in Santa Margherita prevented me from having dinner here.

These days international hotels of a similar standard offer bathrooms that are very elegant and comfortable, sadly this is not the case here.

but don't do it if you are with suitcases.

Unfortunately – as is often the case – the hotel has limited parking available so charges EUR25 for the privilege.

Downside was that the website mentioned a heated pool which unfortunately was not the case.

but with a little chlorine added (I suppose just in case).

but the water was too cold in any case so it was fine) and many others!

The train station is about one mile from the hotel, so convenient to walk if you are not with bags-- Better to walk back as it is downhill.

As guests departed, some of the tables were then laid for lunch, so that the attending guests were packed together into the same area and in some cases there was just a few inches space between the tables.

As is often the case, the only downside was the expensive parking.

at least here i can honestly say you are getting full value for your money, something that is certainly not always the case in europe.

but at the Miramare i believe you truly get full value for what you pay, something that is not always the case in many places in italy (and other countries!).

The dining, pool, beach, housekeeping and front desk staff all went above and beyond with service and friendly attitudes.

The staff were very friendly and welcoming, particularly the restaurant and pool staff, who went above and beyond to ensure that we had a memorable stay.

I can't say enough about how good, professional and friendly every single one of them were.

Nothing is too much trouble for the friendly and knowledgeable staff.

The staff is so friendly and approachable, our room was lovely and bright, and the pool is beyond gorgeous.

The parking team were friendly and courteous and the valet parking was very convenient.

The front desk staff were particularly charming and friendly.

Astounding service (they made our bed each morning the moment we left, as a minor example) the staff are friendly, incredibly competent, and warm.

The service staff, particularly at the pool restaurant, were just wonderful.

but I have been to many 5-star hotels and never experienced the “robotic-ness” and stiffness of a reception staff.

Visited as a a couple and we were underwhelmed by the attitude of the staff both at the reception and at the spa.

I never felt like we were bothering them…they always greeted us warmly.

High attention to detail, great staff & service, and simply stunning.

The staff is fantastic and we never had a single problem as we had multiple issues that were immediately handled.

The staff, especially Stefano, the younger concierge, could not have been more helpful and informative.

The porters just looked at us bewildered and didn’t know what to do.

We booked a 6 night stay sight unseen at the GHM and were rewarded everyday with wonderful accommodations, staff that believed in “eye-to-eye” communication style, and a calmness and kindness that was radiant.

Reception staff gave us a tour of the Hotel before taking us to our room, & that rarely happens.

but wouldn't go back as it's exorbitantly expensive and the rooms are old and tired and you're paying for the view.

The only downside is how costly the hotel is.

but needs to up it's game in terms of attention to detail - not because it's bad, in fact it's very, very good - but because it's close to the most expensive place on this planet and should be correspondingly mind blowing.

but at the price point I definitely thought there were a few things that could be improved.

As far as European hotels go it is not outrageously priced.

It’s extraordinarily expensive for what it is,

I have found some Belmonds to have overpriced restaurants

Here it appears that only those spending a certain amount for the rooms are the ones who deserve a good treatment, while those paying “cheaper” rates and not tipping the staff, do not deserve an equal treatment.

Since we are not going to pay such a ridiculous price for a simple bottle of wine, we ordered the second least expensive one, which was 70eu.

but not outstanding and we ate better and at more reasonable prices elsewhere in Portofino.

A little on the high side in terms of price

Over the years it has become more and more expensive and it was sold out when we decided on a side trip to Portofino, BUT.

but everything is very expensive which is what you would expect from a luxury and exclusive hotel.

Within the current TripAdvisor rating system, one has to rate Splendido as at least a six star hotel.

Thanks to all of the Splendido staff, that are kind and providing a real feeling of well being.

The view, the food, kind staff and everything was beyond perfect.. the view was breath taking.

If you need to get a taxi do not order through the hotel - we were charged 50e into portofino by a taxi they called for us.

First problem our key card wouldn’t work and after several attempts by the two members of staff using their own cards the porter’s card did open the door.

If I would not have used my credit card points to book this place I would have been super upset at the quality/hospitality for the price.

But also here, little attention to clients: I asked for spinach (out of the menu) I got them frozen and tasteless and they were charged 17€!

We went to the infinity pool and spent an afternoon and it was like spending a day in a post card.

Limited hot meal options in the breakfast menus otherwise good .The room service was Ammazing ,my wife was unwell and the breakfast was in the room in no time for a very small charge , The rooms were exceptionally clean with grate bay view.

Taxi driver charge an extra 2.50 euros for waiting.

Another guest out of the blue complained to me about a meal charge.

but we were charged for mini bar items we didn’t have and as my husband is either a) too trusting to EVER check a bill or b) too British to mention the error, I didn’t discover this until we arrived home.

And free parking is limited, so you'll probably be charged 16 euros/night for the use of the underground garage.

However when a hotel is 5 star one expects great service, we had a few incidents such as airconditioning not working for12 hours, our key cards cancelled twice during our stay, such that we could not get into our rooms, we felt as

Please get with the 21st Century and stop charging people for wi-fi in their rooms.

That WiFi is an extra although only a small charge ,

The worst part is that they even charge you for the wifi.

As the password has numbers, letters and capped letters this is not as easy to remember as you would expect
We paid our final bill by debit card and were charged 35 Euro for doing so - this cost was not pointed out to us
Water - many luxury hotels offer water free, this hotel gives you a small bottle 250 ml between two of you - only people in suites get two bottles??

The staff at breakfast was also very efficient and friendly

Only drawback - coming in and going out by foot (mainly coming in) requires a steep climb

Only quip we had was extra charge for wi-fi in the rm at a luxury hotel.

However, a new one of these scooters could be purchased for $6,000 and they charged me over $1,400 to paint some scrapes and maybe replace some of the trim.

It took housekeeping less than five minutes to provide us with two adapters when we requested them for charging our Australian equipment.

Upon arrival we were greeted by very friendly and helpful staff in reception which had upgraded our room to sea veiw with a balcony with amazing views of the coast.

Staff is so friendly , always free to help.

All the employees were friendly and knew at least two languages, so it was easy to communicate.

When you pay all the money, you expect all the service.

The hotel is a little tired - has that 1960's Italian hotel feel - acres of marble floors, lots of confused furniture with 18th C portraits and 70's leather couches
The breakfast was very very poor for the room prices.

but the smell of damp and the outdated and tired rooms do not command the nightly fee.

Many things doesn’t work, the service is not good and the prices are completely unfair - its way to expensive.

It was mediocre at best and ignoring the fact that it was undoubtedly overpriced, the quality was simply nothing to write home about.

Multiple request for ice to our room went without said ice being delivered and a request for an iron which in any other 5 start hotel is a basic room amenity was met with a rather perplexing explanation that they could not provide one for ‘security reasons’ no further explanation to what this security issue could was able to be provided other then they have a paid service available which would not allow for pressing before dinner on arrival in any case.

It was clear that they hardly ever receive Black guests that don't need to scratch their heads about how to pay for a hotel since we paid for the place before arriving.

but beware of the steep prices (undoubtedly due to the upmarket clientele and the locality).

That can’t be said of the hotel manager ; she didn’t show any flexibility nor empathy when we had to depart early for personal reasons .Am pretty sure our already pre paid rooms our now sold again , so the hotel making an advantage of our circumstances.

The bar is incredibly expensive and I mean incredibly.

Expensive bar..Walk to town rater than get ripped off by taxis.

but the savings may cost you dearly in DRAMA.

The only negative is I felt bar prices were a little steep

but to me it’ not worth the price anymore compared to other options available.

Upon arrival the reception staffs were so great, the room we have this time is an ocean view compared to what we had last September 2018.

The reception team, the Concierge, the bell-boys were superb and extremely knowledgeable.

TV system not very English friendly, and our went out both nights with wifi issues.

The taxi driver didn’t use the meter and claimed that it was a set fee (the internet claims it should have been a maximum of 20e).

The only downfall is the Internet connection.

I had some trouble accessing the WIFI from the room,

Throughout our travels we always use the same code number so we put our valuables in and closed the safe using our code.

Our AC didn’t work in our room, WiFi access didn’t work in our room either.

Internet is not working god so we could not have wifi really that is problem and how is this possible we did not understand 5 star hotel and you dont have strong wifi.

Our room was on the fifth floor and there was no chance to connect to internet.

but almost couldn't connect our devices through the wifi.

The hotels Wi Fi was way far from functional, almost as old as hotels design.

My only complaint was that the wifi logged out immediately after you stopped using it for a couple of minutes and required a long login process to renew access.

The Aircon and wifi issue plus the coffee issue lost the hotel its fifth star.

Wifi is poor for 5* hotel, reception was the best area, and down by the pool you need a different login, and each time it asks for your login :(

As mentioned by a previous poster, the only negative for us was also the very hard beds which my wife and I found quite uncomfortable.
