One of the staff came out and said we could unload and then she would direct us to an underground car park away from the hotel, something I was not happy with as the vehicle was full of items for the journey and we was only taking in a small case for that nights stay.

Ther is a indoor car park and I can easily leave my car to this carpark of hotel.

but gone, so drive in heavy traffic to find car park, and walk to hotel.

The car park is only small so I do not know what the other alternatives would be.

but was provided just around the corner at a private/enclosed car park for 15CHF.

Couldn't believe my luck in the morning when I looked out the window and saw a red squirrel climb down the tree in the car park and run across the road!

There was some noise due to traffic outside and I don't think that there are any very quiet rooms as the building is in an intersection with moderate traffic and tram.

The only remark is that even the bathroom was definitely absolutely clean, I had the feeling that it's not.. probably due normal usage and chemicals it's been cleaned.

Sleeping with the windows open was difficult due to road noise.

I would definitely not recommend to stay here due to this fact.

Was not able to have breakfast due to time constraints.

Apparently there is a rule in Basel about the use of the air conditioning so unfortunately my room was quite warm due to the warmer than normal weather for the time of year.

The day I was due to stay in the hotel, I received an email to say that there had been "water damage" in the hotel and that they had to move me to a different hotel.

Unfortunately not much open in Basel n Sunday's so no shopping and small choice of restaurants.

Try and get a room facing the rear, I imagine the front can be a little noisy if you like having your windows open.

The hotel is quite near the main street and you'll hear a lot of traffic noise even if you open the windows slightly.

Since only one key is available, if one person leaves the room, you either take the key and lock the door from inside thus not allowing the other occupant to open the door or have the person inside open it for you.

Bar closes at 1045, which was the only drawback - maybe could open until a little later!

- Very warm in the room
- Air con restricted and very limited cold air
- If you open the window the street noise level is very loud so you need AC to work ! !

The street out front, with the tram passing by often, is quite noisy, especially for people like us who open the window at night.

The location at a busy intersection is a bit noisy especially if you like to sleep with the windows open,

We were on the first floor and with the windows open it was rather noisy.

Air conditioning units were in the process of being installed in guest rooms when we were there, which is a nice plus: leaving the windows open could be a little noisy since the hotel is on a fairly busy corner (roads on two sides).

Btw if you open the gym longer, it would be better.

There was no support and as a result we both have a poor night's sleep.

However, as I mentioned above the noise is a bit much and that, combined with the rather poor ventilation in the room makes it difficult to get comfortable.

As far as I could tell all rooms have the shutters, so previous reviewers complaining about poor light exclusion must just not have discovered them.

but the real problem is the poor internal insulation.

It won't be a simple fix - it's a poor design.

It's poor, with all the classic tasties missing!

nice hotel, good service and a hotel room that is super clean, comfortable, well equipped and looked after well.

We got a free upgrade and the room was just gorgeous!

A few notes:  the hotel uses regular keys instead of electronic keys; I hadn't seen that in some time,

The doors have keys and do not lock automatically when you close them.

The location is key as it's far enough from the city center so the prices of hotels and restaurants are more affordable (Given that Switzerland is expensive its' still not cheap)  The hotel issues a transport pass to use on the trams and busses and the staff is very helpful in explaining the bus and tram route and route numbers.

Wasn't a problem as pretty self explanatory when you discover you're locked out.

The hotel staff depart at 10:30pm and you have a key code to enter the building.

Apparently the thermostat is locked and can't be manually adjusted by the controllers in the room, I found that it was set too high for my preferences for sleep and at some point in the middle of the night had to get up and let the window open, only to a couple hours later -early morning- find out that the street noise was too much as it is between busy crossroads.

If traveling during particularly hot months, make sure you request a room that has the regular air conditioning rather than the “eco-air conditioners”:

Air conditioning was working well, just need a fine tuning in the temperature adjustment.

but the pillows weren't, so combined with the ineffective air con, not a great nights sleep.

however they were unable to get it open, however they brought two table fans to help get some air movement.

The sleeping room upstairs was unbearably hot and never cooled down.

I thought that by the time I would have come back from the restaurant outside the hotel, it would be cooled off since the air conditionning

unit is mounted over the door and eventually did cool things down.

There are metal roller shades which is controlled by the air con unit, just play around with it you will find it.

There is air con and also the window opens and there are shutters on the outside which are operated from a switch in the room (by the front door light switch).

Avoid room 120 which must be one of the smallest doubles of any four star hotel, more like a box with noisy aircon, no proper bedside lights and a very small double bed.

The only draw back on the hotel is the air-conditioning is at the entrance of the door which is around the corner of the bedroom and it gets very stuffy.

Stayed here a few times, sometimes a room with AC working, other times not

Economy room has no AC (its hard anyway to find hotel w AC in Basel).

however during checking it was communicated that stay would be reduced to 6 days, a cancelation fee was charged for the total amount of the room, Internet service was not available, a call was made and never received response, the air-condition leaking leaving the entire carpet wet, there is not space for working , the room is  extremely small.

Well, this is the problem, you need to be able to sleep comfortably in a hotel, and the air con just din't cool the room down.

Only problem we had was in cooling down the rooms: the Swiss like their rooms very hot in the winter.

My only regret here is that the dining room can get very hot in the summer and has no aircon, and tables are really a bit close to each-other.

We ate breakfast in the lovely buffet- the only thing to note was in the lobby and in the breakfast lounge there was no A/C.

The decor and color scheme are unique because it coincides with a special art collection displayed throughout the hotel, including the guest rooms.

we had a double room beds were comfy i should of asked for an extra pillow as ones not enough for me, mini bar was great,

The TV was an old HD TV, so you could not use it to play your own material,

but the street is relatively narrow and with the trams running every few minutes it is very loud, so I had to sleep with earplugs.

the ground floor was undergoing some renovation, so sometimes it was hard to get by/around the supplies; there were times the construction was loud, as well,

We did experience a bit of the buzzing noise mentioned in another review,

There was a buz, which last one or two seconds, and this buzzing could be heard every 60 to 70 seconds around 11 pm.

The Airconditioning was a little bit loud, which is one of the few downsides I found at this Hotel.

The Markthalle (market hall) is just a short walk away with many food and drinks places, including the wonderful Hinz & Kunz Bar.

The key highlights include location (right next to train station, tram station, easy walk to old town, right next to a grocery store, restaurants) and customer service.

Located next to the train station and close to dinning and shopping.

This bar had water, soft drinks and a beer, plus a chocolate snack.

Told us how to use the train system and gave a great recommendation for dinner.

Several hood restaurants in walking distance.

Fresh organic food with lots of vegan options.

There was a wide assortment of spreads for toast, fresh and dried fruit, veggies for sold cuts, and hot food.

We also had some good traditional Swiss food within 2 blocks of hotel as well.

They were all so personal and  assisted with our every need ( how to to use the public transportation, shopping which included a map, best places to eat and a sauna that I had all to myself) The hotel was  very clean and  comfortable with a living room with the bed and bathroom upstairs.

As hotel is only b&b asked for recommendations for restaurants, directed to a great little restaurant on Elizabethanstrasse.

Breakfast was tasty and varied both mornings and check out was at 12:00 noon.

The GAIA Hotel location is perfect (although if you are a light sleeper, ask for a room off the street), near the train and bus station, restaurants, a grocery store, a lovely park, easy walking distance to Marktplatz, etc.

The room where I stayed was clean and stocked up with fresh towels, free beers, cold ice tea for free.

The location to attractions, trams, and trains is great to connect you to anywhere you need to go.

I received a from the hotel reply very quickly confirming if you have a confirmed reservation at a hotel in Basel then transport from the airport is free.

Across from train station and short walk to many trams.

You get a BaselCard with your stay which enables you to ride transit for free and receive discounts at tourism sites (including bike rentals).

Quite location especially considering being near public transportation.

Transport into the city is good (trams almost outside the hotel) and the hotel issues a card that gives you free transport (or it's a 20 minute walk to the river).

Its location is a block from the trams & offers a free pass to ride them plus half off any of the museums.

Well located in Basel close to train station and tram.

Gaia is situated directly across from the Basel Hauptbahnhof and the trams to take you anywhere in the city (which I did utilize with complimentary city tram pass provided by Gaia) are just next to the hotel.

We received a "This is Basel" card that enabled us to ride the public transportation for free, discount admission at the local museums, and free city WiFi.
