The hotel provides free transport for the buses and trams which includes a free return journey on the airport bus.

During our stay we had free transport around basel also 1/2 price for excursions on some visits eg zoo museum etc.

but they held our luggage and gave us a Basel Card for free transportation and then recommended a restaurant for lunch.

Amazing breakfast and we were given a ticket to ride the transit for free while staying at the hotel.

The hotel provided us with the Basel card that gave us discounts and free tram rides.

I emailed the hotel before our arrival to ask if the Baselcard that is offered free by the hotel and entitles users to free transport around Basel and 50% discount at most museums and city river cruise would also cover our transport from the airport.

You get a BaselCard with your stay which enables you to ride transit for free and receive discounts at tourism sites (including bike rentals).

Transport into the city is good (trams almost outside the hotel) and the hotel issues a card that gives you free transport (or it's a 20 minute walk to the river).

As I am often running about town, the easy access to Basel's incredible public transportation, plus the free transport card make my plans easy to execute.

The hotel provided vouchers good for free transportation by trams with stops close to the hotel.

I greatly appreciated the Basel card, giving free transport and reductions on entry to museums.

We were immediately given free tram passes, which also allowed us to visit museums for 50% less.

What this means is that you can basically get anywhere you want to just by stepping outside the hotel door, particularly since all guests staying at Basel hotels are issued free transportation cards for the time of their stay (buses and trams).

Our room was surprisingly ready when we arrived at 9:30 am and she handed us maps and a BaselCard 2023 which gave us free public transportation throughout the city (including our airport ride).

And getting the pass for public transportation while in Basel was the best.

The hotel staff stored our luggage and provided us with a city map and Basel Card which provided us with free use of the public transportation systems.

They were all so personal and  assisted with our every need ( how to to use the public transportation, shopping which included a map, best places to eat and a sauna that I had all to myself) The hotel was  very clean and  comfortable with a living room with the bed and bathroom upstairs.

We received a "This is Basel" card that enabled us to ride the public transportation for free, discount admission at the local museums, and free city WiFi.

It is easily the most tourist-friendly hotel I’ve ever been - free Basel card for free public transportation, including bus from the airport to SBB station.

The front desk staff is outstanding and went out of their way to help us with COVID tests, finding restaurants, and navigating public transport in the city.

A surprise birthday card and unexpected small  in the room is just an example of warm genuine feeling throughout the entire hotel.

I did not asks for this type of room and the room seemed quite small.

Room was small with sloping walls due to dormer windows.

Finding a hotel for a family can be tricky in Europe where hotel rooms can be on the small side.

Great location in the centre of Basel within sight of the railway station and near to coffee and food shops.

We chose this hotel for its proximity to the train station (right across the street).

The location of the hotel is fantastic - near the train station and tram stop.

The location near the train station was ideal as we left Basel two days later for Colmar, an easy train ride from the French section of the train station.

Location was conveniently located right nearby bus and tram stations, which made getting around the city very easy.

You get a free tram / bus pass for each person for length of stay!

The room price included a huge breakfast and a basel Pass that provided free rides on trams and busses, plus half price at some museums and tours.

It is easy walking distance to old town with free bus and tram transportation  to anywhere.

They even give you a local transportation pass for the tram and buses as a complimentary.

There are bus and tram lines right outside the front door.

The location is an easy walk from major sites in the Altstadt, and is on major tram and bus lines for easy access to the rest of the city (such as the rail stations), yet is relatively quiet.

The hotel is in a convenient location, with bus and tram stops right at the corner.

We were next to a busy intersection so opening the windows for natural ventilation was not really appropriate.

The streets around the hotel are quite busy, there is even a tramway.

It is on a busy intersection and would have been noisy if the windows were open.

but it has to do more with the location than with the hotel itself: The hotel is on quite a busy intersection, and when we opened the windows for air (as we like to do) the noise from outside was really too much.

although the air conditioning was noisy (there is too much road noise to keep the windows open- the hotel is on a fairly busy junction).

Really the only negative of this hotel is the street was very busy and loud.

Some background traffic noise due to proximity of busy traffic routes.

but at a rather busy and noisy intersection.

Hotel is located in a walkable distance from the busy city center.

however if you are a light sleeper then being at the corner of a somewhat busy intersection may have its drawbacks.

I would look at the Gates each morning and checked how the locals dressed on their busy day to work.

Our fourth floor room overlooked the busy Schoenbeinstrasse and we didn’t hear a pip of traffic noise.

On the down side, this hotel is situated right on a busy corner so having the windows opening and sleeping is not an option.

This was a pre-cruise hotel for a river cruise.

I can't thank them enough, and if we are able to do the planned Rhine river cruise in the future we will definitely stay at Hotel Spalentor.

We hadn’t really expected much from Basel - for us it was just the jumping off point for our river cruise.

We didn't select our hotel based on proximity to the cruise dock, which was on the other side of the Rhine near Friedlingen, and a CHF 38 taxi ride from where we did stay.

Hotel Spalentor was a great choice for us pre- river cruise.

We were on a river cruise that ended in Basel, and we booked this hotel for a one night stay.

We choose to stay at the Spalentor at the end of a riverboat cruise because of the Trip Advisor reviews.

We wanted a clean, reasonably priced place to stay for a couple of nights ahead of a river cruise (the staff arranged transport to the dock) -- in a location handy for some no-brainer sightseeing -- and the Spalentor was exactly what we were looking for.

We spent one night at Hotel Spalentor prior to joining a Rhine river cruise.

We stayed at the Hotel Spalentor for one night before our Rhine River Cruise  the hotel was very good and we had a great room overlooking the Spalentor Gate.

If you're looking for a place pre or post river cruise, I would recommend this hotel.

The hotel was in a very convenient location after disembarking from a Rhine cruise and very close to the old town for dining, shopping, and atmosphere.

but on the street side the room is very noisy with a window open.

The hotel is quite near the main street and you'll hear a lot of traffic noise even if you open the windows slightly.

Plus points:
- excellent decor, finish & standard of room
- close to the old town
- friendly staff
- large bedroom

Negative:
- Very warm in the room
- Air con restricted and very limited cold air
- If you open the window the street noise level is very loud so you need AC to work ! !

but it would noisy with the windows open.

Its located at the crossing of 2 fairly busy streets so you can hear street noise at night if you leave the window open.

Sleeping with the windows open was difficult due to road noise.

With the windows open we could still hear most of the traffic,

The street out front, with the tram passing by often, is quite noisy, especially for people like us who open the window at night.

Apparently the thermostat is locked and can't be manually adjusted by the controllers in the room, I found that it was set too high for my preferences for sleep and at some point in the middle of the night had to get up and let the window open, only to a couple hours later -early morning- find out that the street noise was too much as it is between busy crossroads.

The location at a busy intersection is a bit noisy especially if you like to sleep with the windows open,

Our room fan could not do enough to move air, and the hotel is on a VERY busy intersection with cars, busses, and trams directly below, so it was terribly noisy with the windows open and disruptive to sleep.

Only one minus: very noisy from the city trams, if you prefer to sleep with open windows.

We were on the first floor and with the windows open it was rather noisy.

Only negative is the hotel fronts and backs on 2 busy streets so a bit noisy when windows are open.

Air conditioning units were in the process of being installed in guest rooms when we were there, which is a nice plus: leaving the windows open could be a little noisy since the hotel is on a fairly busy corner (roads on two sides).

I rated the sleep quality only as very good during our stay since our room on the 5th floor was quite hot and we had to leave the window open, which allowed for some street noise.

The noise from the street means that it is very difficult to keep the window open because of the  traffic noise, as the hotel is on a corner of a junction.

This hotel is centrally located and close to every sort of Basel’s public transportation system.

Having said that, didn’t really use public transport much as Basel is a walking city.

(Hotel guests in Basel are given a Basel Pass, good for free use of the excellent public transportation system.)

There is excellent public transportation right outside the hotel and the hotel will give you a card to access all public transportation for free.

Basel card is included with your stay and allows you free use of public transportation (even before you check in) and discounts on museums.

The Basel public transport card that was provided by the Hotel was very helpful to me.

The Spalentor fits the bill  - quiet and clean rooms with very comfortable beds and pillows, large desk with plenty of electrical outlets for all of today's gadgets, free and reliable WIFI, good quality in-room coffee/tea station, mini-bar, small gym with equipment that works and a cozy lobby bar.

The hotel is well located, a 10 minute pleasant stroll into the centre (or 3 stops on the regular tram); room was clean, bright airy and spacious.We had a deluxe room for 3 of us, plenty of space.

The hotel was bright and clean and our room was spacious and very comfortable.

The bathrooms are a bit small (no problem for us) and have the shower in the bathtub (might be a problem for some people).

My only complaint was that the bathroom was small,
