However, the doors opened wide and we were let in to a towering courtyard that really could have been out of a scene from a Bram Stoker novel.

Have in mind that the restaurant next door does not belong to the castle.. and is not five stars feeling like the castle..

though my wife and I were only there for a night, Matzen delivered a true castle experience, with multilevel courtyards, massive gated doors, spiral staircases, and a tower packed with the latest spa equipment.

So another 5 minutes go by, we're freezing and finally they manage to open the door from inside.

The only thing to stop thieves (or worse) to enter our room was the 300-year-old door locker - ridiculous.

The other problem is the noise, the whole day you will hear doors banging, people walking in and out, talking etc..as the rooms are not sound proof.

The staff is friendly and the breakfast very good.

Looking at some of the complaints, just call them to book a table at the restaurant below before you arrive if you want dinner there, don't take your dogs if you want to leave them there all day, and check how many stairs to your room if 2 or 3 flights of stairs are going to be difficult for you.

For a dog they charge 35 Euro per night and you can not leave him in the room unattended, not like in other hotels in Austria.

When we asked what we supposed to do with the dog, we were told to lock him in a car!

She also was really demanding with an employee in the same courtyard and was rude when her young dog came over to say hello and my son and I wanted to be friendly back.

We arrived in the dark to an imposing looking building and had to ring the buzzer on a huge wooden door.

Be aware that in the off season (winter) the restaurant will be closed and reception will be non-existent for most of your stay so if you don’t have a car you will be stuck and reception will refuse to call a taxi for you if you call and ask them which was annoying.

but the electronic door buzzer wasn't working right. The man on the phone said, "You must be doing it wrong!"

So we had to stand and wait outside (it was minus 7 degrees btw) ringing the bell and trying to communicate with a non English speaking person.

but actually has not a lot to offer, closes at 7pm and you need to call to the reception in order to ask them to operate the sauna.

In the event that you arrive outside normal business hours you must call for admission to the castle – the phone number, as well as instructions, should be on your confirmation.

We were upgraded to a beautiful suite by the manager, Claudia, she was truly amazing and so welcoming.

The castle itself appeared ancient and modern at the same moment - the receptionist Claudia welcomed us very warmly and led us to our room - we had booked a standard double room - and were upgraded to the Junior Suite in a tower on the third floor overlooking the frozen lake and gardens!

Entire staff was great especially Claudia who greeted us with such enthusiasm.

The reception was very helpful and nice and also efficient.

It is in great renovated condition, the staff was more than amicable and caring, the wellness Spa tower is so unique, you feel like you got lost in a Disney movie!

In a very cheerful manner, she led us to our room and explained all the necessary things to us.

The service is charming, helpful and efficient.

Claudia in reception went out of her way to make sure we were happy and comfortable.

The castle still contains the private dining room, chapel and reading room of the previous owner, which made it feel like a truly historic experience.

They have good breakfast and very nice staff.

If you want to stay in a genuine castle then book this one!

The lady at the reception told us that the spa and the restaurants were already closed.

Tobias, a very polite young man checked us in giving us a complete tour of the castle hotel.

When we arrived, we were greeted by Claudia, who could not have been any sweeter, welcoming, or accommodating.

From the reception to the rooms to the spa in the tower, it all gives the impression of perfection.

From the check-in and greeting by the hostess to every minute of the stay, this was perfect.

The décor is lovely and pretty, the same can not be said for the rest of the stay and with pathetic WiFi.

The only negative points: The Wifi is slow and the water could be hotter.

The man who was inside just said that the door is working fine and that they just gave us a wrong code!!!

Many cons - lack of services in general, very  bad wifi on our suite, no room service.

The restaurant is expensive with a very limited menu and its the only place you can eat around there, the wifi doesn't really work due to the structure of a castle, the owners are in the hotel at all times and you get to notice that without any introduction which comes across as unfriendly and also puts pressure on the hotel staff, therefore not warm and welcoming as you expect.

THE AVERAGE: WiFi did not work in the rooms and you had to go to common areas to receive it.

although we could have been warned we needed to have a code to get back in after we went out fora walk and returned around dusk - felt like a poor wayfarer rattling the gates of the castle to be allowed in.

but due to the nature of construction (foot-thick stone walls) the wifi signal couldn’t be detected in our room, only in the breakfast room or study.

It is very important to book ahead to avoid disappointment (we only asked day before and only massage was available).

The staff are absolutely amazing they will help with anything to make your stay better.

Room 608 had ensuite shower room and 609 had ensuite bath which may be preferred to sooth aching limbs after a day skiing or walking.

The lady running this bed and breakfast is both friendly and firm.

You should note that although you are booking an apartment, you are still within the house so not entirely self-contained -

2ndly, the owner tried to hit us up for an additional 4 euro per room, because for only one night her profit was cut because we booked with Booking .com.

At the farm itself are two ponies, chicken, sheep -one male that was kind of playful- and goats.

but slightly more expensive, so I guess this is what they all eat for breakfast!

They treated us more like guests than customers and really made an effort to share the local food and culture with us (even to the point of inviting us to a town concert with them and treating us to the local Zittertal beer there!).

You'll definitely need the car to drive around- otherwise there aren't many restaurants around the area to have dinner!

but would probably stay in Fugen if we came here again, so we were closer to the Hochfugen ski resort.

Perfect accommodation and meal, great hotel service, friendly staff and super skiing conditions.

Overall we enjoyed our stay and want to thank the friendly staff.

Great spacious rooms, friendly staff, good choice of dishes with local specialties, convenient parking, excellent spa after skiing (big swimming pool with whirlpool, sauna, infrared, steam bath, fitness room), relaxing as sitting in a bar.

Lack of these is so weird and unacceptable for a so called 4 star hotel in my opinion.

but not quiet as relaxing as you can hear the kids screaming from the pool when you try to recover at the resting area.

From the great staff, especially the gentleman from Sofia and the lady from Slovakia, to the perfect food, feather pillows and amazing sauna.
